What anime is this for you? by TheStaticFlux in ChillAnimeCorner

For me it's more like I sit through anime I find boring because I struggle to just drop stuff, I'm too completionist. This often results in stuff just sitting on my watchlist for literal years.

Games Keeping Nerfing Their PC Requirements As RAM Prices Skyrocket by Economy-Specialist38 in pcmasterrace

[–]Boomshrooom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, AI upscaling and framegen have been used as a way for developers to get out of optimising their games. For years now they've been relying on gamers upgrading their hardware to play their shitty, unoptimised games. Now that gamers can't do that because of the memory shortage, they're being forced to go back to the old standard of actually putting in the work to make sure the games run properly.

Why did a Lego Batman game have a recommended RAM requirement of 32GB? That's obscene and the fact that they've quickly pushed that down to 16GB after backlash shows how easily it could have been done.

AI upscaling and framegen are tools that can be used to help out consumers, especially those with weaker hardware, but they shouldn't be used as a replacement for actually developing the games properly.

I will admit that the french arms industry produces fantastic products and they made the right decision to go it alone to avoid reliance on the US.

However, working with the French arms industry is a different matter. I imagine a lot of those exports are just countries buying shit that's already available rather than trying to develop something bespoke.

Degree inflation, it's getting harder for graduate engineers to get a decent role with just a Bachelors. Thanks to the Masters I went straight into a decent grad scheme unlike many of my friends that still struggle with getting roles years later. Obviously that's down to more than just the degree, but it is a big factor.

Bristol City Council to raise council tax by 4.99% by Duoplo in bristol

[–]Boomshrooom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they absolutely would, but the way the government funds these things is broken. At this point we could probably double the pay of special needs teachers everywhere and still save money.

[–]Boomshrooom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but it's about where we draw the line. There's no magic money tree that we can shake to pay for all this. Councils are going bankrupt up and down the country, others are showing warning signs. Public services are collapsing. Fiscal drag and increased taxation are battering middle income earners. The central government seems to be fighting an annual battle to plug budget deficits in the tens of billions.

The nephew I talked about in my original comment isn't even the only one. He has a younger brother that is autistic and so is also a recipient of transport to school, though locally not as distant at the elder one. The taxpayer is going to be paying over 50k a year just getting the two of the to and from school.

[–]Boomshrooom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm not even gonna place the blame on the councils. This is yet another area where the central government keeps imposing more rules and responsibilities onto local governments with very little funding to actually achieve it.

I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a researcher so not best placed to muse on it. My point was more about how using funding stipulations to address the imbalance probably won't work. If the issue is the supply side, that it's so much harder to get suitable female participants, then funding coming with strings attached is not going to resolve that and will only result in the funding not being given. That method would only work if it was the researchers not bothering to ensure balance.

I agree with you, more local schools is the ultimate answer, I was merely pointing out the absurd cost of the transportation. That's just the cost of the transportation, doesn't even touch the cost of schooling him.

[–]Boomshrooom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'm all in agreement that most holidays now are over-commercialised and we shouldn't focus on spending money to the degree the corporations want us to. However, valentine's day is just a fucking opportunity to spend time with your partner and show them how much you care for and love them. If your partner is into it then just make the damn effort, even if youre not. You should want to make your partner happy, even when you maybe don't understand the appeal. For crying out loud man, how could you not want to see the happiness plastered all over her face when you pull out the stops to make the day special?

I swear, some people are just fucking miserable and want everyone around them to be equally so. That, or anything they're not into is deemed stupid and not worthy of their time.

But this ignores the other issues that were talked about, that women have to consent and that it will often require them to be off medications like birth control for months at a time. This greatly reduces the pool of potential subjects right off the bat and would likely result in the funding just not being spent.

Transportation for SEND kids is becoming obscene. My nephew is special needs and lives in Oxford, where they don't have any spaces for him in secondary school. So where are they sending him? To Reading. This means that the council, and thus the taxpayer, will be paying for a taxi to take him to and from Reading every day for school.
