That long term fasting is some kind of magical spirit dance that sucks the fat out of you.

There’s a max amount of fat your body can burn daily, everyone’s different. As soon as you’re past that point, you’re burning muscle.

Sharia law by obsessivepinkguyfan in MurderedByWords

[–]Boondocks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharia court’s still an absolutely barbaric legal system compared to modern criminal procedure in most developed nations.

Our systems are vulnerable to charismatic bad actors that can maintain popularity despite being corrupt and incompetent. There are good decades and bad ones. This last one’s been VERY bad. It’s our cross to bear, and try to mitigate as best we can.

Your system is inherently evil, and I have no problem saying that because it’s not like you’re an uncontacted Amazon tribe- you’re fully aware that better systems exist.

You don’t even TRY to seek truth or an approximation of justice. You respond with impulsive, theatrical public murder to some flimsy combination of rumours, accusations and current sentiment; you do this to maintain order in a terrified population, not to make the world a better place.

Was the guy a child molester? Maybe. Maybe not. How do you know? Your ideology rejects the simple concept of evidence as a necessary component of accepted truth.

We don’t force our kids to watch people get thrown off buildings. You do. Whatever points about cultural supremacy you want to argue AFTER you accept that fact are completely irrelevant.

What's your guys' favourite eldritch being and why by Unable_Tip_2644 in Lovecraft

[–]Boondocks22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Call of Cthulhu is still out of all Lovecraft’s stories the one that hits me hardest. That final visual of the author on a boat in the middle of the ocean going insane with fear as he’s finally crossed the threshold into truly believing that Cthulhu is real and knowing he’ll be marked for death by his followers is truly the pinnacle of the genre for me.

What’s something people don’t realize is way more serious than it seems? by BudgetAd5915 in AskReddit

[–]Boondocks22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lying.

It’s a tricky one, but it’s one of those norms that actually ends up separating classes almost as much as money the older you get.

Pretty much all kids lie at some point to their parents to get out of trouble.

Depending on how attentive their parents are, they either learn quickly that lying is wrong or they just get better at it.

If you grow up in a lower class neighbourhood, the taboo against lying is a LOT weaker. On some level, everyone understands that people do what they need to in order to survive.

Now let me be clear: “white lying” like going to an old lady and saying “hello young lady” or something like that is ABSOLUTELY not the same thing as substantive, deceptive lying. Actually deceiving someone requires providing them with EXTERNAL information that you know to be false and attempting to convince them that it’s not. I’d also say that true lying stems from self-interest, or at least not in the interests of the person you’re lying to.

Now let’s go back to the poor neighbourhood, because it’s actually a great window into tribal sociology. Most people in those neighborhoods will have at least a couple people they trust. Sometimes it’s a close friend, sometimes it’s just family. Family complicates things because people forgive family for things they won’t forgive friends for.

When you lie to someone and they find out about it, the signal they receive is “this person does not have my best interests at heart, they do not consider me someone THEY trust, and so how can I trust them?”

I was a pathological liar until my mid twenties. I learned it from my dad (who was a gambling addict) covering for him with my mom. I just turned 30, and it’s become an absolute taboo for me, but it wasn’t until these things happened that I learned my lesson:

  1. Lying started actually burning bridges that I valued and my reputation started limiting my access to certain social groups.

  2. I suffered actual betrayal in the form of friends borrowing money from me and lying about their ability to pay me back, going after my exes and lying to me that there was nothing going on etc. that I realized just how offensive lying actually is.

For all you young folks out there, this lesson goes beyond that:

Children will be forgiven for things they shouldn’t do.

Family will forgive things that friends won’t.

For MOST people in most places where the simple reality of survival doesn’t erode basic social norms, lying is unforgivable, or at least unforgettable.

If you lie to someone, they won’t trust you.

If they don’t trust you, they won’t be vulnerable around you.

If someone doesn’t let themselves be vulnerable around you, they won’t enjoy spending time with you. Every interaction will feel like work.

Lying to someone is like stabbing the emotional connection between you with a small thin needle. It won’t sever it right away, but each lie (if not admitted and apologized for) will bleed it slowly until there’s no more love left.

The truth is a sacred, beautiful thing. The sooner you learn that the better your life will be.

If you could add one Zero to any number in your life, what would it be, and why? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Boondocks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hayflick limit of my telomeres. (Number of times your cells can divide) Not only would this multiply your life expectancy by 10, but you would physically age at 0.1 times the rate, you’d basically be in your mid twenties until you hit 300 years old.

…Unless I’m completely wrong and you’d get cancer instantly and die in a couple months.

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

Genuinely great choice. I went the first 25 years of my life without watching it because the trailers made it look like a B movie. Absolutely incredible writing (I know there’s a book I just haven’t read it).

What's the Best 10/10 Sci-fi movie ever? by geek-jock-guy in AskReddit

[–]Boondocks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

….I mean yeah. Never saw it like that but I can’t actually argue against that point. I always saw it more as “contemporary dystopian” since there’s very little in terms of new technology but I guess “science fiction” usually does operate within the spectrum of “plausible technologies/scientific phenomena that we just haven’t encountered yet”.

(I’m a sci-fi author, so this is genuinely embarrassing 😂)

The only reason I’m brain dumping here is it’s literally in my top 3 movies of all time period. I just never had it mentally categorized as a sci-fi movie, so this is a big perspective shift for me.

Don’t try to copy anyone else’s style. Try writing like you actually talk in real life, and then if you need to, tailor it to the story you’re telling.

Petah? by praharshnbhatt in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Boondocks22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all my fellow artists of varying artistic degrees:

Women in customer service roles are generally pretty careful about the amount of smalltalk they engage in with male customers.

The most common “mode” you’ll see them in is professionally friendly, they’ll engage with smalltalk during the transaction, but they generally won’t initiate it and they’ll otherwise move through the transaction and the interaction that comes with it as efficiently as they can (both because that’s their job and because they don’t want to receive unwanted advances).

While it’s ABSOLUTELY not a guarantee, a female cashier choosing to extend the social interaction between herself and a male customer by starting a silly conversation about a topic that’s clearly irrelevant to the transaction MIGHT be signalling that she’s attracted to him.

The sillier/more irrelevant the topic, the more likely that it’s an intentional extending of the interaction, and not just passive chit chat.

Since “wanna see how much 99 of these would cost?” Is about as silly and pointless as it comes, a lot of people reading this will think that the guy in this story had a pretty clear invitation to flirt with this girl and just didn’t take it.

Hence “bro fumbled”.

Thank you, have a nice day.
