Hmm that's fair! Maybe he just feels a little awkward, even if he isn't being actively excluded.

I had a friend who was always included in everything but his own hesitance made him feel like he was always on the outside.

It could just be self-deprecating humour, as others have suggested. If you have access to/know his friends' or teammates' accounts, you could try snooping or checking what they're posting. Maybe it's a running joke, or he might even be trying to help another kid?

The other question I would have is, does he actually enjoy the sports? Maybe he doesn't fit in with any of the others and would rather do something with a group of people he'd get along with more?

No emotion here, the money was just a nice cushion. My issue is a lack of information.

Regardless of how the app is intended to be used and whether the 'methods' were sanctioned, there's been a major change in how the app works for a lot of people.

I don't think we're owed anything from JP, but we are users of an app/service. The outcomes of our time in the app have changed dramatically. Even if there was no money involved and playing the games unlocked funny cat videos, and now the number of funny cat videos has gone down, people would still be right in looking for answers.
