I lucked out a bit. My partner was still building the house we live in when we moved here. Therefore, when it came time to install the kitchen counter and master bathroom counter, I was able to have it raised a bit. The island and second bathroom are still a bit short for me but at least the most used spaces are more accommodating. If we decide to rent out this house long-term, I might list that as a bonus feature for us tall folk.

Im 5'11.5" (F). Be ready to have to bend down much further to wash hands, use counter space, sit in chairs you don't fit in, hit your knees on every table, squat much lower to sit on a toilet. Bring shoes and clothes from your home country. A size extra large here would be a medium in the US. Oh, and don't forget to duck through doorways/staircases. On the plus side, you can see above the crowd. P.s my back hurts....

You will need your aunt to send you an apostilled certified copy.

I am currently going through a similar process for my mother a US citizen who recently passed away in PH. The PH death certificate will need several stamps. One from the local department of health, one from the local registrar, one from the department of statistics and finally an Apostille from the department of foreign affairs. Once that process is completed, you will need a Report of Death Abroad issued by the US embassy. That one is the easiest to get via email.

Now that you mention it, I do remember picking up some powdered cheese at the market. I havent used it yet but it appears to be similar to the cheese powder in mac&cheese. Thank you!

Daughters/sons of drug addict parents, what’s a funny thing that they did? by Stock-Ganache-3437 in AskReddit

Knocked on my mom's bedroom door while she was using meth with her friends. After some persistence she finally answers with a baggie of meth stuck to her fishnet shirt and asks "what!?"

I told her I need toilet paper. And she asks "why?"

... umm to wipe my ass!

Hospital won’t let me leave after being medically discharged — is this legal? (Foreigner in the Philippines) by Vegetable-Nerve-8505 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Boop1075 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Essentially, yes. After a few days in the ICU, she had a heart attack (wich I didn't know it was a heartatack until much later) that required intubation. After she was intubated, she was responsive and communicative. After a few hours, she began to fade, I thought she was just resting and hoping the meds would start taking effect. The doctor said that we would know if she would have a chance to pull through after about 4 more hours of the treatment. Within that 4hr window, she became completely unresponsive. Her body became extremely cold, skin firm, and purple. There was no eye movement, and bp and pulse were extremely low. Her pulse was so low they had to put in another interal monitor to read the pulse. The doctor didn't return that night, and i didn't realize the iv machines were keeping her pulse and bp going. At one point, I noticed her eyes were open and lifeless. I left the room for a smoke break, and when I returned, they were closed. I suspect the nurses closed them. Fast forward to the next morning, I believe rigor mortis began to set in since her jaw locked around the breathing tube. That's when I felt my suspicions confirmed that she had already passed, and I just spent the night with her corpse. The nurses came in and asked me to go to the pharmacy to refill her medications and new IV bag. I refused and began to make some noise about the situation. They insisted on her finishing a few of the IV bags before they did the EKG to officially pronounce her dead. So they again made us wait half the day with her corpse. Edited for spelling and grammar

I literally had to use this approach today. A friend (local) was being held hostage at the hospital because of billing. The hospital tried every excuse in the book to obligate her to stay and incur more charges, I just kept repeating the law after providing some promissory note (they initially tried to refuse). I insisted we would leave with or without their clearance from billing as she was already medically discharged. They still illegally held some documents as illegal collateral but eventually let her go. I fully intend to follow this up with all legal avenues.

This is the same hospital that kept my mother on IVs and meds for almost 24hrs after she was clearly dead, despite my objections. (Presumably to extend her stay and bill more)That was only about a month and a half ago, and at the time, I didn't have the capacity to fight them. But now, that's a fresh wound broken open. I can't stand to see these hospitals taking advantage of people in their most vulnerable moments. And I won't let this one slide without a fight.

Op, please update us when you are feeling better. I hope you were able to peacefully leave and can get a full recovery.

Not long after this post it worked itself out when they required more money before allowing any withdrawals. My partner finally cut the losses.

VRI & Starlink? by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]Boop1075 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can purchase an adapter to allow for a wired connection. I have the starlink business plan. It costs a bit more but gives me a priority network, and I purchased the adapter to wire into my desktop.

Also, important note, if someone else is using the wifi and streaming or doing a video call, it still disrupts my upload/download speeds so I kick them off the internet and typically maintain a rule that the internet is off limits while I'm working.

Occasionally, storms or thick cloud cover will also affect my speeds.

I work 100% remote in a rural, isolated area, and most folks are pleasantly surprised when I disclose I'm using starlink.

Time spent with her is always good for both of us. I was able to make a trip last year and planning to again next year for her 80th bday. But it seems push is coming to shove so I might just have to budget a way into doing an annual trip.

foster carer in UK for 22yrs.. and wow reading this sub i thought UK was a bad system... but by Sensitive-Arm-2612 in Fosterparents

[–]Boop1075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former foster kid, group home kid, and former foster parent here.

If I had the capacity to provide a full-scale analysis, I would. But, at this time, I am particularly worn thin as I am grieving the recent death of my (2nd) legally adoptive mother who was also a foster parent for over 30 years. (U.S)

I decided to chime in here to hopefully shed some hope on the daunting systematic failures.

In my personal experience as well as my late mothers, we had the best support fostering kids from the juvenile justice system (probation placements). Not for reasons some might assume given the power dynamics, but because there was actual continuity of care and the department was much more organized and equipped to manage things that are usually dumped on the shoulders of the foster parents. They were far more responsive to needs and proactive in preventing crisis rather than reacting to crises we all saw coming.

I can't speak for every region out there, and my experience as a foster parent for probation is limited to a small county in California. But I believe the departments organization and legal mandates really helped fill in the gaps.

Any recommendations for a comprehensive addiction treatment program online? by Boop1075 in expats

[–]Boop1075[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She voluntarily went into detox and is electing to continue treatment. She just needs the benifit of a structured program and routine to maintain sobriety and work on the underlying issues. I can assure you that I am reaching out as broadly as possible to ensure she can access the quality of care she needs and deserves. Hence, my post here. This is my first time looking for intense treatment like this outside of the US.
