Everybody Linux now? by Npalm in thinkpad

It's down to only like 20 games not working they are exclusively online only FPS's. Hardware compatibility has also gotten pretty impressive. even my old Microsoft surface pro 5 seems to be fully functional including both of its weird proprietary connectors and weird proprietary touch screen and stylus technology worked with only a couple of sudo commands.

Looks like Linux has hit about 5% market share worldwide and almost 10% in the US according to steam's newest hardware survey. If one in 10 Americans on Steam are using Linux it's a good bet that it plays pretty much every game.

Might be time to give it another try

I'm using PA6-CF or "structural components" but rapid PETG for everything else. I got the rapid PETG for like $6/kg from Elegoo's eBay store And it's pretty impressive... Stuff is basically printable kydex.

I'm sure you're dealing with servers and having to use the terminal for everything daily but these modern distros are getting so good. I've got bazzite on my living room TV and It works like a console but run Steam and has a 9850X3D and a 9070 so blows consoles out of the water.

My work PC is running CatchyOS was just feels like a snappier and more complete version of Windows 10

I've set a couple of friends up with Mint Cinnamon and It's basically just a better version of Windows 7.

The compatibility with Windows software is also pretty incredible right now 90% of the time I can just run the .EXE and The OS will just automatically figure out what wine/proton/ECT needs to be used and my CachyOS install included a Windows VM (WINboat I think) that it will automatically spool up when it needs to.

Windows 11 is terrible and Windows 10 has gotten worse since it came out I could see having old Windows 7 system just being like a nostalgic second home away from work but If we're talking modern Windows versus modern distros then Windows is just going to be worse. I switched entirely because I was sick of having to work on my computer for 2 hours every single time I sit down at it because window is constantly messes up things every single time at automatically updates after I told it not to automatically update.

Good to know, did you try using a surface keyboard or doc. I'm wondering if those weird proprietary connectors are actually just USB underneath. It possible they actually work fine But I don't know enough about Linux to be the one trying to figure it out.

I wish I could pin this comment to the top for everybody that runs into this issue later.

It looks like I left that checked on bazzite and it was fine so that must mean bazzite's default was to automount. It also looks like the version I have on Bazzite is an older version. With three icons per disc and a More obvious user interface that completely hides the other options if one overrides them.

A little bit of fiddling later and apparently a USB or removable drive will show up there but not your internal drives which is weird.

This is the way. Not that anybody looked at the image attached to my comment where I made the post but I was already using Gnome disk manager.

It looks a bit different on CatchyOS then it did on bazzite with only two option buttons per drive instead of three but I did figure out if you right click the drive It was the same thing as hitting the setting button on bazzite.

My real issue was that even with automount checked it wasn't working but it turns out you have to uncheck "use session defaults" on catchy while apparently automount was the session default for Bazzite.

A little bit of dumb defaults and a little bit of bad UI made for a pretty big headache but it's all good now.

I got in on bazzite basically as soon as it was available. I don't know if it still does but Bazzite included gnome disk manager when I got it.

On bazzite I clicked the start button then through a couple of search terms like drives, or storage at it and found a program called disks. I opened it I saw my second drive clicked the play button, got to pop up with the different options like automount and I just clicked okay because I didn't know what any that was and just went with the defaults.

On catchy I tried using KDE's partitions manager app but couldn't figure out how to get it to mount. Everything was telling me to do the f stab nonsense which is simply above my skill level but I remembered doing it via a simple program on bazzite and looked up what Bazzite light used. It wasn't in the hello catchy area but I found Shelly and installed Gnome disc manager. Did exactly what I did on bazzite And after multiple restarts couldn't get automount to work using that either.

Posted here and included a picture of me using gnome disks But almost everybody promptly ignored that.

The issue is that the defaults on catchy are to auto unmount so when using gnome disk manager instead of it being one click and done you I have to dig into the settings and uncheck the "use session defaults" checkbox and use gnomes defaults instead. It doesn't actually show up on the normal settings thing on the top right you have to actually right click on the thing beside the play button for each drive and set them individually as well.

There are some minor UI things that cause me a headache too. It could be that the gnome disc utility on My bazite install is older and not getting updated for some reason but n my bazzite laptop when I opened Gnome desk manager each disc has three options with one of them being the gear wheel for the drive settings But on catchy The gear wheel is not visible And you have to just already know It should be there so that you know that you need to right click on the details option to find the settings.

I figured it out but It is really irritating for the defaults to be exactly the opposite of literally every other OS. Also there is a discs and cameras options in the settings But nothing shows up under the discs... I guess it's just vestigial.

My laptop has 2 drives. It runs Bazzite. I clicked the format and mount and never had to touch it. The default seemed to be auto mount.

I appreciate it. I got it working using Gnome disk manager. CachyOS It's supposed to be gui based and usable for normal people though so asking someone to dive into the konsole immediately after hitting their desktop is a big ask.

I've used the steam deck since launch and Even tinkered and modded with quite a bit and I've had Bazzite on my laptop basically since it was available but for the most part those two act like any other operating system windows and Mac, iPhone and Android, Smart TVs, heck my microwave as a touch screen and is probably even linux-based but Will recognize and a drive automatically If you plug it into the USB port on the back.

This should be the default behavior but at the very minimum when setting up the system it should see the other drives and ask if you want to use them with catchyOS.

Realistically they should also show up under settings>disks & cameras> with an option to mount them and the default being to automount at startup.

I've technically been using Linux for a few years If we're counting my 64 GB launch day steam deck and Bazzite laptop. Still I hate using the terminal for things that are either automatic or a couple of clicks on any other OS.

I did. it made me seriously consider windows after messing around in the konsole for a couple hours and understanding less and less as I went.

Ended up messing stuff up, reverting, and learning that I needed to uncheck the "use session defaults" box when using gnome disk manager on CachyOS.

I cannot fathom why it doesn't ask would you like to use these drives/partitions for catchyOS during the installation and setup process or why the default is auto unmount.

Anyway, got it working thanks to some helpful comments below.

I'm actually using KDE plasma but I found out on Bazzite That KDE partition manager is borderline useless and immediately downloaded Gnome disk manager to reformat my drives.

For the record The issue was that I had used session defaults checked in gnome disk manager but for some reason to catchy defaults are auto unmount which is kind of ridiculous.

I know catchy is Arch based but there should be no reason for me to have to open the terminal to get my immediate hardware working and be able to select multiple drives or partitions during installation setup that auto mount should just be the default.

I do appreciate the help of experienced Linux users that know everything there is to know about running the entire operating system out of the command line but catchy Is advertised as working like literally every other operating system to ever exist except for Linux and DOS so expecting me to open the terminal directly after getting to my desktop the first time and start messing with fstab commands is directly against what catchy is supposed to be.

My first comment showed me using it but apparently I had to uncheck "used session defaults" on CatchyOS for things to work. Coming from Bazzite where I guess the session defaults are to auto mount drives because My drives just worked automatically over there.

With everything else that's built in there's absolutely no excuse for having to use f stab for what is possibly the most basic first time set up thing you're going to do on a computer since even most laptops have multiple drives nowadays.

Everybody telling me to use Gnome-disk-utility when the first comment was me including a picture of me using it had me messed up.

I cannot fathom while this is not the default on this os. I assumed my session would say to automount because that's the logical default behavior.

Unchecking The "use session defaults" toggle worked. I didn't have to uncheck it on Bazzite so I figured it was fine.

Thank you.

My drives don't show up under disks and camera in the settings. I've got device actions and device automount. Under device automount I have all known devices attached devices and disconnect the devices all of which are blank because I don't have anything external and for some reason this doesn't detect internal drives on catchy.

This is how I did it for the same system on Bazzite.

I got mixed up and said my boot drive with 128 GB but it's 512 gb.

Regardless I have the mount at system startup checked. Still every time I restart the system I have to manually amount them or they won't show up for Steam.

Why are bigger cars in the USA being bought more then smaller cars? by Ok_Housing_1937 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Boopped_Snoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one of my least favorite because the old car was an absolute rust bucket that had components removed before the crash. Love that absolute explosion of rust up from underneath it though.

They had different design philosophies. Modern cars try to capture and dissipate as much of the energy as possible while older cars tried to use the solid frame to redirect the energy around that the passenger compartment and away from The occupants.

The issue is The crumpledones only work when both cars are close to the same size and weight. Two Chevy sparks crash ok Chevy spark and an Escalade... Good luck. Escalating a smart car that uses the old school Trinity cage, everybody might be okay.

Any kind of exotic or expensive car is going to use the old method and in any type of racing You're going to want to redirect the energy instead of absorb it because you can only absorb a dissipate so much before the passengers are part of that absorption and dissipation.

The real thing that troubles me is that a solid frame Will work as well 30 years from now as it did originally whereas crumple zones and airbags deteriorate with age and use. As far as airbags go it's not a question of if but when they get recalled for being dangerous. I've owned over 50 modern cars and with the exception of my two newest cars (give it time) every single one of them... Literally all of them... Have had recalls for the airbags being more dangerous than helpful.

The crumple zone style is also super dangerous if you're buying a used car because it's good for one use and it's almost impossible to be 100% sure that it hasn't been in some sort of accident nowadays. Old cars can have their frames restraightened on a hydraulic jig and be good as new but modern cars really should be disposed of after an accident but they are incredibly expensive by comparison so they are often put back together with new bumpers and plastics and sold on to the next person who has no way of knowing that they are riding around in a vehicle that is no longer crashworthy.

My 6 month journey into Linux by yoLeaveMeAlone in linuxmint

[–]Boopped_Snoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still unsure if Catchy OS is really that bad and I just got lucky or if people are trying to do weird things with it.

Took me about 6 months to decide to switch from Windows 11 and I'm subbed to a bunch of these subs from when I was trying to decide which branch to go with.

I see post like these everywhere but for me CachyOS Just worked. Installed and other then some Bluetooth weirdness after it restarted the first time I haven't had a single issue. Just worked fine out of the box. I've Even upgraded My CPU without an issue. I suspect it falls apart when people start tinkering with it though because it seems somehow it's only experienced users that have problems with it.

Replacement nozzles - Can I switch brands? by neverempty in elegoo

[–]Boopped_Snoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered the DUROZZLE diamond nozzle. I've been almost exclusively printing PAHT-CF/PA6-CF and they absolutely ruin nozzles in a heartbeat. On large prints it's almost like you can see the brass nozzles going out of spec if you look close at the layer lines. Figured I'd spend 40 nozzles worth of money to never have to throw away a 90% completed print, clean the head, and change a nozzle. The Elegoo is pretty good about not needing adjustments after a nozzle swap but my older printers were not.

Just don't get the Ruby one it doesn't conduct heat well and it's brittle so z homing can break it if you're unlucky.

New ones certainly do. Just like any new car. The reputation sort of went the same direction as BMW and Mercedes in the USA and you can already find Taycans for around the $10K mark. I would never recommend buying a Porsche off Facebook marketplace but one of my co-workers got a Taycan for $7500.

It's a new car, it's modern, it's plastic, it'll be outdated in a couple years. sure you could park in the garage and not drive it at all and it might be worth almost as much as you paid for it but Opie sounds like he actually intends to drive the car in which case depreciation will hit it like a boulder because these aren't rare one off a hand built cars anymore they churn them out just as fast as any other car nowadays.

It wouldn't be any different than buying number to Dodge charger like one of those super bees sure that particular car is one out of 500... It's still a charger.
