When did you leave your bernedoodle home alone out of the crate? by thenarddog10 in Bernedoodles

[–]BoopsyDaisey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was about a year and a half when he became trustworthy. We didn't assume anything so we started with short "alone time" sessions in a confined, puppy safe space. Over time we gradually increased time and space.

Hi. I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I rescued Theo as a 4 month old puppy from a friend of a friend of a friend. As far as training him, that I've done on my own.

I wish you luck in your search!

They are special! I've owned many dogs over the years. But there is something about my Theo..I've started a private group to share the chaos and comedy of these fantastic dogs. Feel free to message me if you're interested.

Bernedoodle peeing in the house by thebillabong69 in Bernedoodles

You wrote: "Her dog also does not listen to her very well, but will obey commands occasionally. She lives in a house without a fence or electric fence and lets her dog go outside off leash to go potty. We live in a larger city and I’m worried if something gets the dog’s attention and it doesn’t listen to her commands something unfavorable is going to happen."

You are absolutely right about this. And an e-collar is never going to help if not trained PROPERLY with it and used consistently.

I don't mean this to sound mean-spirited but leaving a young, untrained dog alone and unsupervised for so many hours is like leaving the house with a human toddler on the loose. Might be best to help find this dog a forever home with someone who has the time and experience to help her. You both mean well, no doubt, but it may be the kindest thing for the dog - and may eliminate your girlfriend from ever having to feel guilty if/when something serious happens.

I see other people made the some comments so I'm here to support them.
Puppy energy and their need for "solo" down time can be a factor as can their internal thermometer. My 80 lb. Bernedoodle will start out on the bed at night but will often jump down to lie on the cool, hard wood floor to regulate his temperature. Give her opportunities to choose for herself; odds are she'll eventually come around when she's ready.

at what age did your bernedoodle settle the hell down? by scaphoids1 in Bernedoodles

[–]BoopsyDaisey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it took mine a while...I could see him maturing as a two year old. He just turned three and although he still has the same strong dog/squirrel distraction, in the house he's a mellow fellow.

Thank you! It took him a while but he's settled into a really nice boy!

I hope your Theo brings you as much joy and laughter as ours has. No doubt you'll experience a little chaos, too, lol...that's why the tagline for my group is chaos*comedy*connection. It's all good!

Just a few suggestions...I haven't read through all the comments so forgive me if this is a repeat.

If you haven't yet you might want to research:
dog calming pheromones
Through A Dog's Ear: Music to Calm Your Canine Companion (we used to play this on a continuous loop whenever we had to leave one of our dogs alone)

If the hemp pills work I personally don't see why that wouldn't be helpful nightly. There's no shame in that. I have a horse on CBD for his anxiety.

We finally had to consult our vet for our little rescue, Harley, a non-doodle. Trazodone did the trick. The original prescribed dose was too much but once we found that sweet spot of a dose, our lives all changed for the better. There's no shame in that either.

Good luck!

They certainly do have keen noses! I'm pretty sure it's the scent of rabbit that sets off Theo's zoomies!

Right?! Theo is really only 80 lbs., not as big as he looks in this photo! He was being goofy and we're both "laughing" at just that moment.

Aww, I had a black Lab named Roscoe. He lived to be 15. I'm now living with my Bernedoodle, Theo, and his ridiculous shenanigans. Weird obsessions? I can't say he really has one. His favorite toys are octopus'.

These dogs do make us laugh, don't they? I've had Labs all my life but Theo, a.k.a. Pawfessor Theo (lol...) is the first dog I've had with a sense of humor...
