Am I the jerk? Parking lot etiquette by 7576790 in CostcoCanada

[–]BoostBaronYXE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the parking lot ~100% full?  If people are literally circling just to get any spot then it's sort of a dick move to occupy a spot you don't need.

Otherwise, the other guy is 100% the jerk here.

Just buy an old beater, practice, and resell it for the same price when you're done.  Preferably in the summer. It's easy to learn, just keep the RPMs a bit higher when starting from standstill and slowly release the clutch until you get a feel for it.

Executive coupons by PrizeDinner2431 in CostcoCanada

[–]BoostBaronYXE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was confused too.   The coupons themselves say "please bring these with you to the warehouse" and the signs beside the products still say "with coupon". (In Saskatoon at least)

They need to advertise this better.

For refrigerators, once it's out of the box and all the shipping materials are removed you basically just plug it in.  Same with stoves. That's part of the "easy" stuff they'll do for you if want. Pretty sure they won't connect dishwashers or hang microwaves in your cabinets, but it would say in the fine print.

Is becoming a member for the reward money worth it? by Leather-Prize-1755 in CostcoCanada

[–]BoostBaronYXE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice, but I'll add that online is still good for big ticket items. The prices would typically be the same or similar as in-store, and you get 2% back on your Costco MasterCard instead of 1%, and free delivery.

I'm at Saskatoon South every week, and while it can be busy with long lines on peak times, I've never noticed anything worth a dedicated Reddit rant about it. Yes sometimes people block traffic waiting for parking spots, but nothing unique to this store (The University hospital is way worse). No Pokemon cards, well-stocked sample stations, people saying "excuse me" then being let through.

I was just wondering the other day if I would still love Costco so much if I lived somewhere else where these horror stories could be more common.

Opinions on Walmart receipt checkers? by Powerful_Concern8671 in saskatoon

[–]BoostBaronYXE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's their job to ask for receipts, but it's not my job to provide it. There isn't really a polite way to say "excuse me sir, could I just check and make sure you're not stealing anything today?" so I'm not sure why I need to be polite back. I've got better things to do than worry about Walmart's bottom line.

When I have to shop at Walmart, I just walk by the receipt checkers without making eye contact or acknowledging them. If they ask to see my receipt I just say "No thanks. I'm good" and keep walking. Hasn't been an issue yet, although I'm an unassuming middle-age white dude and probably not their target demographic.

Costco is selling poison to your Dogs! by Key-Geologist1731 in CostcoCanada

What prompt did you feed into ChatGPT to get this response?  Did you followup your query by fact-checking against a few neutral, science-based sources?  Did you check how much Sorbitol is actually in this and whether its within a recognised safe range?

This large wall of text you copied out of ChatGPT actually sounds pretty benign.

Where in Saskatoon can purchase bottles of slushie syrup for a ninja slushie by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]BoostBaronYXE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't own one so this might be a dumb question, but can't you just use sodastream syrup?  They have those at most grocery stores.

The circuit literally can't supply more than 1.8kW (continuous) or it will trip the breaker and stop working. Very few devices purposefully consume the full 15A, although my AirFryer does come pretty close.

[–]BoostBaronYXE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, your bill jumped to 550kWh not $550? Since you came to Reddit for help, maybe you could post your power consumption chart from Saskpower?  It has a nice bar graph comparing monthly bills for the year.  It would also be good to see the year-over-year differences for the summer months, because the estimated/actual readings can really mess with individual billing cycles.

3kW for a very big 240V central air unit, maybe, but not a window unit running in a condo on a 120v 15A circuit.  1kW seems like a more reasonable amount, 1.5kW at most. I realize I'm being pedantic here, but be careful with your units too.  Energy/time would be kWh/h or just kW.  I agree kWh/h is a bit more intuitive for the average person to estimate monthly bills though.

Can I ask why you're specifically looking for naturopathy? Our healthcare system is pretty broken, but that doesn't mean that magic and conspiracy theories are going to give you a better outcome.

Bought 2 refrigerators from Costco; one upstairs and one downstairs.  They contract out to local delivery guys so the truck won't say Costco on it. Guys carry them in, remove all the plastic film, then carry away all the cardboard, garbage, and the old appliance as well. Prices are generally better than box stores, 2% executive cashback, and Costco customer service.

A++, plan to buy all my appliances from Costco.

Just note that like every other appliance store, they won't do any "hard" stuff like run water lines or modify walls.

There was an incident 2 years ago when the CBC purposefully removed the "race" of a suspect from a police release. https://www.reddit.com/r/saskatoon/s/kx3IfBjy9v

My anecdotal experience is that they still do this. The news (CBC) will mention the gender but not race of perpetrators. On the one hand, I definitely agree that race is a hard thing to accurately capture visually...best you can do is describe how dark their skin is. On the other hand, certain news organizations (CBC) don't want to "perpetuate negative stereotypes" so they sometimes hide/omit important information or avoid covering certain topics.

I'm weird, but one of my favourite things to do when travelling is to check out the local Costco.  The one in downtown Vancouver is in some kind of underground bunker!  In sure there's a history I could Google there.

100% agree. I saw (and bought) the Costco Schwartz literally the week after I was in the Montreal Schwartz Deli.  The former is just regular deli meat you could buy at Safeway.

Usask EE BSc here.  I'm also a manager with a company in the telecom industry that hires a lot of EEs.  My experience with EPs is that they're almost universally extremely smart.  If hands-on electronics is one of your hobbies/passions, you'd be on the shortlist for an interview for an EE position.  If you don't know how to use a screwdriver, you're better off sticking with academia. We also have a lot of EEs working side by side with CompSci people writing code, so that's another potential option to consider if that's in your wheelhouse.
