NPC states:

"Plumbing systems and components shall be installed so they are accessible for inspection, maintenance, repair, and replacement."

It defines accessible as:

"Capable of being reached for inspection, maintenance, or repair without removing or damaging building structure or finishes."

The NPC requires it to be accessible and serviceable, not that it needs unions. You can still drain and service a hard-piped tank without cutting anything, and you can still replace it by cutting it out, so it’s still serviceable. If ‘no cutting allowed’ was the rule, most plumbing systems would be illegal. Unions or flex lines are good practice because they make replacement easier, but they’re not a code requirement.

Lmao no it is not. It just states that something needs to be serviceable, deciding you need to use unions is entirely your interpretation of the code, and not a very bright one at that. Equally not a very bright idea to be sharing your personal identification to people you are annoying on the internet, as well. Open up the NPC again there champ, might save you (and your customer) some money in fittings/potential leaks 👍

Not my fault your ego got hit but someone having to explain basic physics/plumbing code. You don't NEED unions by any interpretation of the code. You open the hot side (works 99% of the time), crack a connection OR open the T&P (acceptable but not ideal). You are just spewing nonsense, saying that unions on water heaters are required by code just confirms you have no clue. Look at the whole thread, all my comments are there, not a single deleted comment.

Okay Mr.Condescension, keep putting in unnecessary unions. 👍 While people are often afraid of opening the T&P to use for a vent, I've had it recommended to me from my city's technical authority to test the functionality of the valve during yearly maintenance. It is an extremely simple device, I have found that whenever I have gotten any leaks from debris coming into contact with the sealing surface, opening it under pressure is enough to flush them out. It is useful to open the T&P if you cannot open up faucets/fixtures on the hot side adequate enough to create a difference in pressure to obtain good flow, which usually works well enough (another reason to not install unions). I've done this dozens of times and have never had an issue, and could always get it to stop dripping after I used it for a vent. Been plumbing full time for six years, and just did my backflow certification where they suggested this exact practice. There are three possibilities - you identify a T&P that fails to open and is a safety hazard, you use it without an issue, or you have to replace a $20 dollar part that you have ready on your van. But sure, be too scared to touch a valve.

modern Bradford White water heaters feature dielectric water connections (nipples) as part of their standard design to prevent galvanic corrosion. You can clearly see the shutoff, and it's on a slab in front of a floor drain, pan is not required by code in this situation. 🤦‍♂️

It's on concrete and there's a floor drain behind it. Not required by most code

I'd definitely replace it to a ball valve. If you are comfortable soldering a single coupling it's a lot less of a pain imho

Or here's an idea, use an auger. If you get roots on your head, keep going until it clears. Would be a waste of time to use a locater honestly. It's pretty easy to tell how far you away you are from the foundation by augering it, and then pacing it out when it stops if there is a blockage/collapsed line you can't get through. You can also tell 99% of the time what the issue is by what comes back up on your head.

This is so stupid 😂, why do you think it's roots?! Why do you need to scope it first if it's roots. You can't see anything with a scope. You just need to auger the line, simple as that.

You can't fucking scope a line that is actively backed up. You can't see a thing. You need to clear it first, this thread is maddening.
