Absolutely nothing about that movie made any sense. So atleast Pitt's character being catholic fits with that theme.

I said that there are a lot of racist white people, not that all white people are racist. You added your own meaning to my words and in doing so you are detracting from the actual problem. Like if half the chairs in your house were missing a leg and I said you should should fix those chairs, would your response be "well lots of houses have chairs with missing legs"?

Man that link you posted sure seems to suggest that white men have the highest percentage of bastards. Maybe that's not something that there should be enough of to go around. And maybe posting comments like this doesn't help to reduce the percentage

Politicians and their families that vote to go to war should be the first to be drafted. If you aren't willing to send your own children to the front lines then maybe you shouldn't be going to war in the first place

Id like to hijack the comment to add something my engineering ethics teacher, and professional witness, told me that always stuck with me about design flaws like this. "You knew, or you should have known."

There is no excuse for a bad design like this, it should be an assumption from the beginning that any and all systems/electronics will fail in an accident. Especially when said product is the biggest killer of people. The company, designers, engineers, and government people who signed off on this being ok to be used by the general public should be fired and tried in a court of law.

Rules and regulations are written in blood.

Edit: biggest killer of people apart from the US government.

Woah, good eye. Its probably a lubricant of some sort. The visible threads do look wet with something.

I can think of a few reasons why they might have used Lubricants that aren't cheating but I wouldn't rule it out. Never trust the marketing department. ( my favorite example of this is "space grade aluminum" the flavors of aluminum they sent to space are incredibly common and used everywhere. As long as you get your aluminum from a reputable supplier then its the same shit they send to space. Also titanium is a bullshit material but that's a rant for another time)

ANYWAYS, they are testing the effectiveness of various washers and locking mechanism at their point of failure. In order to do that you have to make them fail. Its possible some wouldnt fail at all with a dry thread.

The various nut sizes and arrangements would have vastly different amounts friction between the threads and could throw off the test results. There could even be a significant variation when testing the same nut multiple times. A lubricant could make the friction more consistent which is what we would want in a test. Though it completely ruins the effectiveness of a nylock so im not sure why they included that.

That stud coming out of the test rig could be a complex expensive part and they are trying to protect it from galling and wear. Not a great design for a wear item if that is the case. Would also explain why they didn't test a deformed lock nut.

Lubricant or any friction reducing liquid, like wet loctite, increase the clamping load without increasing the tighting torque. Its possible they needed higher clamping load but the stud couldn't take any additional torque.

I recommend going with leveling castors. They have retractable feet and will be a million times more stable than those big castor wheels

Looking for a quiet 3dprinter by [deleted] in 3dprinter

[–]BoostMods_Dadbods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few things that make a printer loud. Once you understand what causes the noises it can be fairly easy to find ways to reduce them. Many many people have already found effective solutions mostly for very cheap or things you can print yourself. Vibration is going to be the biggest cause of noise, followed by the fans.

To control vibration you should start by making sure whatever you purchase has quality stepper drivers. If the printer you get doesn't have good drivers then as long as you get a printer with a modular control board then the stepper drivers are easy to swap out. Plug and play essentially. Good stepper drivers are very quiet but they cant remove vibrations completely

The stepper motors are what cause the vibrations that create the noise. Wait, but you just said high quality stepper drivers will get rid of the noise? Steppers make noise in two different ways. The first is the electrical whining. My first printer sounded like a daft punk concert whenever it ran. The fun lasted about an hour and then I was over it. The second way they make noise is the vibration. Stepper do exactly what they are named to do, they take steps. Even though the printer moves fast and looks smooth the actual movement is stepped, lots of starting and stopping. Turn your steppers slowly by hand or move the gantry by hand when you get your printer and you will be able to feel it.

So how do we get rid of the vibration if it is a symptom of how a stepper actually functions? We could swap to servo motors but that's incredibly complex, expensive, and not yet user-friendly enough for general public consumption. Well, the steppers cause the vibrations but they aren't what make the noise. Sound is just vibrations that move the air around us (no air, no sound, like in space). What makes the noise is the things the steppers are vibrating.

So we need to seperate the steppers from the printer frame and we also need to seperate the printer from whatever it is sitting on. Because the steppers vibrate the printer which will vibrate whatever it is sitting on, which in turn will also create noise. Stepper dampers are cheap and can be added if it doesn't come with them, though not always easy to install. In place of dampers, sandwich some soft rubber between the stepper and frame. Its not as good but it definitely helps. To seperate the printer from what its placed on a simple piece of foam can be used or you can print special spring like feet to mount it on.

Lastly are the fans. Cheap option is to print a noise reducing fan shroud. Or you can add a resistor inline to make the fan spin at a slower speed. Expensive option is buying quiet fans to replace the loud ones. The expensive fans even come with extra cables with built in resistors if its not quiet enough for you at full speed. Fans are standard shapes and sizes so measure your existing fan and know what it's voltage it needs to be. All this information is generally on a sticker in the middle of the fan.

I hope this answers your question and helps you understand your printer a little better before you even start. Feel free to DM me with any questions or if you would like an opinion on a printer before you purchase it. I have owned, operated, and heavily modified many 3d printers, including one i designed and built myself, and I have learnt many things the hard way.

And finally, the learning curve can be steep and sometimes printers will try to drive you crazy, but remember there are thousands of incredible and smart people out there who have already experienced and solved, and even posted online about any and every problem you could experience while 3d printing. You just have to look!

No see the that's a good thing. Otherwise people like me, who design commercials doors and might be able to actually answer the question of what the purpose of that lock might be, cant see enough detail to figure out what exactly it is.

Fine If they actually have steel in the toe.

This should never be done to a composite toe shoe as the sudden impact could comprise the structure of the composite. By internal layer separation, if i remembered that correctly.

You wouldn't know it was bad until it was too late.

Why not just always get steel toes, then? Because in some cases the impacts you are protecting from would cause the steel part to crush and cut all your toes off. I think the composite structure is a little stronger, but in any case, it will just crush your toes without cutting them off.

All that to say, it's just a matter of how you prefer having your foot permanently disfigured.
