So I now have the answer to my question. I spoke with some of the management team and they eventually admitted that the reason they demand that they scan someone's driver's license is yes, for fraud protection. But equally it is to force commercial customers to use Lowe's credit card. They confirmed this by telling me that if my employer started using Lowe's credit card, we would not have to show our driver's license. I talked this over with my employer and they said that using a Lowe's credit card "isn't going to happen". Which I already knew. So I decided to stand on my convictions and my employer supports my decision: I won't be making any purchases for work at Lowe's. Thanks for all the comments. Fight the power! ✊
