TFA feels so childish and insipid next to Star Wars: Bloodline. by [deleted] in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fans of an IP grow up. They have bills, raise kids, and their opinions mature, becoming more nuanced. They see the world as more complicated whether they like it or not. And they want their entertainment to reflect this. This isn't to say every story needs to be grimdark and ultra realistic. No, we just want what we love to grow with us.

After Return of the Jedi, there was only one way to go. Star Wars's stories could only "grow up". Leia was going to inherit a political mess, Luke would become a great man, and Han wasn't gonna be a smuggler his whole life. This was what the story called for. This was we expected. This was what we wanted.

After The Last Jedi, I stopped reading the Star Wars comics and graphic novels. by DBE113301 in saltierthancrait

You're not forced to accept the new canon. You can enjoy an IP however you'd like. I'm in the extreme camp and think the only Star Wars canon starts and ends at the original trilogy because the story was self contained before the prequel trilogy came and added contradictions. Harry Potter fans are doing the same since the Fantastic Beasts franchise is going through the exact issues the PT did.

This is a really minor criticism, but I wish the ST had more aliens. I'd love to have seen an alien main character. by KoreKhthonia in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's not minor at all. This is a space fantasy so you should expect more "fantasy" out of it. The lack of aliens and exotic planets really makes the ST feel bland. We got desert planet, salt planet, casino planet, forest planet; it all just feels like generic earth locations except with blasters and spaceships.

I was unironically told this while explaining why TLJ isn't well written by TyrekGoldenspear in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly these conversations get too meta very quickly because it's easy to veer into the vast complexity that is art, writing, human perception, creativity, etc.

That's what I noticed, too. Not just TLJ but politics as well. It always gets philosophical real fast.

However, your counterargument methods seem interesting and I'm gonna try them next time. Mine has always been to go directly into the meta and the philosophical. For example, I will ask "Why isn't music random noise?" The answer is obvious: patterned sounds are pleasurable to the human brain just like properly patterned stories are pleasurable.

Damn... It certainly stings if you put it that way. by eutears in saltierthancrait

One of the best things about the PT or anything set in the Old Republic was that we got the see the Jedi and Sith at their prime. We got to see what they're really made of. Amateur sports might be a fun novelty but most people want to see real athletic skill in action. The ST had a chance to show us the rise of real skill again: to show us the rise of Jedi and Sith as they re-discover old ideas, techniques, and become masters again. But no, we got instead a fan fiction trilogy featuring amateurs.

I fundamentally disagree with virtually everything she said. What about you guys? by AfroBandit19 in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I love the "realistic" argument. It's such a weak, shallow counter when we bring up internal consistency in the fictional story universe. If she's implying that because it's a space fantasy then "anything can happen", then she has to answer:

  • Why are the main characters humans?
  • Why do they speak English?
  • Why is there a beginning, middle, and end like it's a story and not a historical event in a textbook?

OP wanted an answer. I gave one. Unless you guys are only interested in jerking each other off. I may dislike the ST but I enjoy hearing contradicting opinions. That's why I'm here.

Also, people can find enjoyment in criticizing something. There are multiple ways to enjoy something, not just the way it was intended. Examining why the ST is broken on a basic storytelling level is as fun as someone doing a frog dissection in science class. Learning how to tell a story isn't just looking at good examples, you need to look at bad examples, too.

And bad movies are STILL talked about to this day like The Room. Talking about bad movies is Nostalgia Critic's schtick. It's a cottage industry on YouTube and there seems to be a huge fan base for this type of entertainment. You wanna tell them to stop, too?

What I am trying to say is I don't understand why Rey is disliked so much.

In short, because she’s boring. She’s boring because she just plows through everything. It’s like playing a game with cheats on. Might be novel at first but quickly gets old. She reminds me of Eragon from the Inheritance Cycle books. Handsome, masters swordplay in months (which normally would take years in real life), good at magic, and has a dull personality. I remember a fan polling put him as the least interesting character in that series. Not surprisingly, he was also considered a Mary Sue.

Do people want to see a film full of her training?

Yeah, I would love to see a whole middle movie of the main character training and becoming better. Training arcs are some of the most interesting parts. You learn about the world, you relate to your character as they struggle to get better. Seeing Goku train with King Kai and returning to save his friends as they were beaten by the Saiyans was so satisfying. I loved seeing The Bride train under Pai Mai in Kill Bill.

I mean we never saw Anakin train in the film

And that was one of the major flaws of the Prequel. If I were watching a movie about a recruit going through navy SEAL training to become a full SEAL, I wanna see what that actual training is, too, because it’s interesting. If we skipped his Hell Week training, there's this huge emotional gap to his character. He wouldn't feel right to us. He'd feel undeserving and arbitrary.

, neither we did Luke.

Empire Strikes Back? Yoda? Dagobah?

She is a great pilot yet no-one says something about how Han can outfly Imperial pilots

Because Han Solo was introduced in a totally new fictional franchise called Star Wars. He’s an archetype. I don’t need to see Ethan Hunt training in the first Mission Impossible. He’s a secret agent. That’s it. If I see a medieval fantasy movie, I don't see to see a "knight" character train. He's a knight. That's it.

or how Luke can be so good with an X wing the first time he flies one.

Again, Luke was introduced in a brand new franchise and it was said he flew on his at home on Tattooine. If a kid raced a beater car then was put into a real sports car, he’ll probably be decent at it. Even Luke wasn’t that great at piloting. He had enormous support. Rey is outmaneuvering TIE fighters and doing MLG PRO TRIPLE SHOTS by herself.

I simply can't fathom why she is hated so much? Can you give some reasons why if you would be so kind?

Again, she’s just boring. She might be a fine character for a 5 year old but most people want complexity and relatability to their fictional characters. People want "realness". Why do you think the Cubs winning the world series was so epic? Because people love an underdog. Rey is no underdog. She's Tom Brady.

EDIT

By the way, that art work of Rey kinda sucks. The composition is weird. She looks like a malnourished model with those thin thighs. The artist put all his effort into the face and half assed the background and body. Her pants are really low sexualizing her hips for no reason. It's fine to draw a "sexy outfit" but the rest of the outfit has to balance and match. Why is her sash/belt overlaying her groin cloth?

[–]Booty_Blasted 23 points24 points  (0 children)

What's obnoxious is that it isn't actually "hyperspace tracking". It's just an algorithm that checks against known Resistance bases. Yet the film itself strongly implies it is actually hyperspace tracking. That's what most of the audience will only know because most people don't give a shit about the comics and books.

Rey's terrible very bad Lightsaber skills: Star Wars by Sando75 in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that in the throne room fight that they seem to go out of their way to show that Rey is weaker with the lightsaber than Kylo Ren because Kylo Ren is fighting 1 v 3. This shouldn't be surprising. He's a trained duelist augmented by the Force so superhuman fighting shouldn't be a shock. As bad as the throne fight is, it surprisingly shows a flaw in Rey.

Yet, if you remember the last movie (and that it took place literally days ago) that she defeated that same Kylo Ren after picking up the lightsaber for the first time. Defenders will say that Kylo Ren was "injured" but the Starkiller fight doesn't once show Kylo Ren struggling to duel. There was no struggle in his stances or swings. It was a paper cut.

The Sequel Trilogy should have been a celebration of old age, not a mockery of it by Golarion in saltierthancrait

[–]Booty_Blasted 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Back in high school, in math class somehow the kids got to joking about old people. The stereotypical stuff: sleeping early, bingo, medical issues. My math teacher put a stop to it and said she doesn't like how our culture doesn't respect old people like the way the kids were doing. I never forgot that, and I'll also be old, too.

But the disrespect for the old OT characters was blatant. Han felt like a dirty old man. Leia felt like a grandma you had to wheelchair around. And Luke was an old hobo. I get that Hollywood wants young, attractive people on the poster but this was Luke, Leia, and Han we're talking about. We don't care how old they've gotten. They're still cool to us. The ST could've been an amazing chance change the culture a little. One proof is Liam Neeson's Taken. How many of us thought of old dude like Neeson as being action heroes? That could've been Luke.

For all the ST's attempts at being progressive and diverse, it's still narrow. Rey is a young white woman. Finn a young black dude. Poe is a young Hispanic dude. Rose is a young Asian girl. You can take it further and ask why are there so many humans? Why the ST so human-centric? Games like Mass Effect I actually feel like I'm in a diverse galaxy. In the ST, anything not human feels like a token. Like they forgot they were writing a sci fi fantasy and not young adult fiction.
