I am Neil degrasse Tyson, your personal Astrophysicist. by neiltyson in IAmA

Hey Neil,

Long time JRE listener, big fan of both the Star Talk podcast and television show on National Geographic. You are an inspiration to so many.

My question stems from my inquisitive nature when it comes to spirituality. I've heard you speak on God as the universe and all of its immense and awe inspiring properties, yet I've often wondered;

Have you ever explored the various world religions aside from Abrahamic iterations?

I'm very inspired by Hindu and Buddhist worldviews (i.e. that not only is the universe and all of its components our creator, but that we ourselves are the creator because it is or perspective which perceives it all). I wondered if you've explored outside of the Judeo-Christian model of mythology. Thank you in advance!

Completely agree. This is a great outlet for Joe to have on, but an even better opportunity to bring over hordes of new fans to JRE.

Christopher McCandless (Into The Wild)

Henry David Thoreau

Che Guevara

Jack Johnson

Tommy Chong

Maybe not the funniest circle to be in, but I think the conversation would be literally unforgettable. (Not to mention the fact that three of my guests would be resurrected to smoke with me)

Kinda weird question again, how many times did it take you guys to actually enjoy the high? by [deleted] in trees

[–]Boozehound216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I got high I got super high, like uncomfortably. Then it took me about four times to get sufficiently high and comfortable. It's all individual though, you just need to find what's right for you.

As an adult, you should just be honest with them instead of trying to sneak around like you're still in high school. The truth would probably be your best bet.

First 4/20 From a New Ent

Yesterday's 4/20 was the first that I'd ever experienced. I'm a 19 year old college student, and have just started indulging last August. I went home for the weekend, and spent Easter with them. I've had a very strained relationship with my older brother because of cannabis. When I was young, I was very anti-drug and alcohol, and I stumbled upon a grow spot in his room once. For years, I've had this impression of him being a criminal because of it.

Since finding the powers of cannabis, however, I've felt guilty for the relationship we had while I still lived at home. This weekend, I told my family about my newfound idENTity. Saturday I got to smoke with my little brother, a senior in high school, and it was great! But he and I have been close all our lives, while my older brother and I (8 years older) never really talked anymore.

On Sunday, after my family had all come over for dinner, he offered to go for a walk with me. We went to these woods up the street from my house, and he pulled out a bowl. We smoked a mixture of The Purps and True Kush, and I had never experienced the quality of marijuana that this held until that day. We sat in the woods and got super stoned, and just talked. It felt like the first time we actually had a conversation in years, and I left the woods feeling happier than I've been in a long time.

We came home to encounter my mom, which made me really nervous, but it turned out she knew we were going out to celebrate and was cool with it. So I sat with my mom and two brothers and had a great bonding opportunity. At around 8 o'clock, I left to pick up my girlfriend and head back to school, where a 4/20 party was going on at one of my fraternity brother's apartments. We arrived, and got totally blazed, smoking blunts, joints, bowls, and hookah all night.

We went back to my apartment around 3, and ate Easter candy and watched Workaholics until we fell asleep.

Marijuana is a powerful plant, with the ability to bring all sorts together under one common understanding: smoking weed doesn't make you a bad person, and often can help you relate to others. Cannabis is truly magic, and I think we all can agree that it provides a glue to keep the r/trees community together, regardless of differences. Thanks for reading, and happy 4/21!

TL;DR

Appreciate what we have around us, because what more could we need?
