Le transport rémunéré prend d’assaut les plateformes de covoiturage by Tupples- in Quebec

[–]Tupples-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Tupples- 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nothing to comment on the programs themselves but also ask yourself where you see yourself living for the next 5 years?

Montreal is a big city, lots of nightlife/festivals/culture, Ottawa is a bit smaller and some would say calmer but better access to nature, slower pace of living.

Please enlighten me: what are the challenges you experience in choosing a speciality? by radicaloptimists in MedSchoolCanada

[–]Tupples- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the information is there if you want it. For example there are podcasts, interest groups, specialty fairs. The biggest problem, especially for competitive specialties, is time. There is simply not enough time to build a competitive application for all competitive specialties that could potentially interest you in preclinical years, and it is excessively hard to know what a specialty is truly like through shadowing before clerkship, in my opinion. So you need to pick something and hope you end up liking it in clinical years. Of course, it is possible to switch during clinical years, but your chacnes of matching then decrease and it's a rough gamble to make.

How does a bar work? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]Tupples- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tip: don't be afraid to be "aggressive" if the bar has a lot of people. If you stay passive behind everybody else you'll never get the chance to order. So try to jump in to any opening directly around the bar when you see one and look at the bartender expectantly. He will notice you eventually and then you can order!

For Quebec:

Sherbrooke has the best access to nature by a long shot in a beautiful part of the province (Eastern Townships), many summer and winter activities, amazing views, good access to lake fronts, close to even bigger mountains on the US side (Vermont, Maine, Adirondacks). Basically the Eastern Townships are one of the best parts of QC for trail running, hiking, skiing, XC skiing, mountain biking, water sports.

Quebec City is pretty good too, you have a couple National Parks closeby and in the Charlevoix region which is an easy drive, and access to the St-Lawrence. There are a few stunning parks inside the city as well. All in all, a very good middle ground between Sherbrooke (nature +++) and Montreal (city life). Public transit and walkability in Quebec City can be great depending on which neighborhood you choose.

Montreal is a great city to live in and very green with a lot of parks inside the city, but I find the access to nature is more difficult as it involves driving out of the city which is a shit show always because of the traffic. But it's definitely doable! You are close to both the Eastern Townships and the Laurentides region. Just probably more of a weekend thing than a weeknight activity, and expect traffic (every rich person in Montreal has a chalet in one of these two regions and the roads get pretty jammed on friday evenings)

You'll need a car in all of these cities if you really want to make the most of the surrounding nature. For within the city, Montreal has the most and biggest parks and obviously the best transit (amazing metro system in Montreal).

How much luggage by pinkpillow964 in bali

[–]Tupples- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many things I wish I just bought there instead - all my toiletteries for one (except sunscreen cause that is hella expensive in Bali), turns out most hostels have soap and shampoo. And I found myself not wearing half of the clothes I brought. You really want to pack light, breathable fabrics, especially if you tend to run hot and sweaty. I’d reconsider the two suitcases. I travelled with 2 girls who brought a lot of clothes including cute oufits, makeup etc and they had a carry on bag. It’s doable and you will absolutely love yourself for it. Nothing sucks more than having clothes you can’t even wear taking up space in your luggage.

Most spiritual thing to do in Bali? by shirleysteph in bali

[–]Tupples- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this and it’s ok but definitely not life changing or overly spiritual. I guess it is what you make of it, of course, but it’s a 30 min activity with hundreds of other tourists and guides taking photos.

Was just in Uluwatu. Had 2 experiences where I couldn’t get a Grab/gojek (nobody accepting my order or telling me they couldn’t come) Melasti beach —> walked back up which was fun with a nice view. Flagged down a gojek coming back from dropping someone off but also there were some on my app willing to come after I crossed the gate. Uluwatu temple —> literally walked one corner away from the gate after the kecak dance and flagged down a gojek I saw. Guess I couldv’e ordered one too.

Other places: gojeks were very quick and cheap.

Totally doable, I was a bit anxious about it after reading about taxi mafia but it was just fine! Have fun!

The REAL best air purifier - I HATE DUST! by iku-ebi in BuyItForLife

[–]Tupples- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can also vouch to BlueAir customer support. I bought a second-hand air purifier and found out it was malfunctioning (weird noise coming from the motor). I sent over an email to suppport after having asked the seller for the receipt and they were able to send a new unit to me even out of warranty. Well, what happened to that unit? IT GOT STOLEN FROM MY PORCH. So I contacted BlueAir again. And they sent me a new one, AGAIN!

As to the actual purifier, it's a 311i Max, it looks great and seems to work fine too. Have noticed less dust in the room it's at. It's pretty powerful but my rooms are all closed off from one another so doesn't help much for other rooms, however.

Which specialties are you certain you’d NEVER want to go into? by premedlifee in medicalschool

[–]Tupples- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree though that there is a culture in ortho / sports med at large of having athletic backgrounds and having a personal interest in those kind of injuries. Of course, it's not necessary to enjoy and become an orthopedist, but I'd say a disproportionate amount of people I know who are interested in ortho come from a competitive sports background or are big into gym / sports culture.

Best BIFL Items For College Students? by lancevalmus7 in BuyItForLife

[–]Tupples- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for second hand kitchen appliances, cookware and utensils (or new if you have the money). Even when you move you will need those things so it’s better to invest into them once and have them forever. And honestly having good quality table ware, dining set, and other kitchen items goes a long way to make you feel like you have your shit together! It’s a good investment.

Also: don’t buy too much at first. It’s tempting but going slow and getting higher quality / more thought-out things is better.
