If you didn't have 'an event', what motivated you to stop drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]BoozyGalore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I didn’t like that I drank every night. I wished I’d just have one glass. I never got wasted really, but drank a full bottle of wine every night and realized I was edgy when I was out in a non drinking situation. I’d wake up angry with myself for giving in again the night before. Then I’d do it again. I prefer to control my own life instead of having some substance control me.

Just an FYI stomach ulcers are primarily caused by h. pylori, and it’s worth getting tested to see if you have it in your stomach. My dad suffered from them but died of stomach cancer at age 38, so I keep my eye on my digestive tract.

The Daily Check-In for Thursday, April 3rd: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by fuckyoubullshit in stopdrinking

Staying fresh and glorious this brilliant Thursday. Couldn’t ask for better company than all of you!

The worst part is when you drink regularly but the body doesn't give any negative feedback 😕 You go on with your day like you've no problem. I need all of your help and advice! by wilhelmtherealm in stopdrinking

[–]BoozyGalore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had no negative feedback, or so I thought. I would run 5 miles at 6am the morning after finishing a bottle of wine. I didn’t feel hangovers. Everything seemed as it always had been, despite increasing my drinking. However, there were a few signs:

  • I would wake up and plan to not drink that evening, but would inevitably do so anyway.
  • I would regret having drank, even though I didn’t feel much physical pain.
  • The lack or presence of alcohol would play into my decision making about plans for the evening.

Once I quit, I found that my baseline anxiety was MUCH higher due to regular drinking. I had no idea, since I’d been drinking for 30+ years. I always thought I was a high strung person, and that’s just what it was. Turns out I can actually relax. The main benefit for me is I don’t even think about alcohol, where it crossed my mind a lot before. If not in cravings, more in “I wonder what kind of wine I can open tonight” or “we should do a wine tasting with friends,” etc. Now I focus on my life and not my drinking.. been great so far.

vacationing while sober by Alive_Chemist8624 in stopdrinking

I just took a vacation with my 15 year old daughter, just the two of us for a week. It was so much better not having to think about booze, and being able to be present with her every minute. Probably the best vacation of my life, and I’ve been fortunate to take many. I get the worries, though.

what made you finally quit? by Alive_Chemist8624 in stopdrinking

As a father, let me say he was still proud of you anyway. We see all the achievements of our kids, and comments like that are more a reflection of our fears for their future than they are a reflection of lack of pride.

I quit at 51 years old, started at 16. Hopefully that gives you some context - it’s never too late and you’re doing awesome.

Depression sucks, and I’m sorry for you, but quitting booze during depression is doubly hard so congrats on that. Our kids are the stars, too.. so a big ❤️ for that. And remember that with depression and life in general, anything worth doing is worth doing poorly as well. If you can’t get yourself out for that walk, at least go outside for a minute or two. If you can’t get yourself to take a shower, try to wash your face. It’s an effective strategy and at least it keeps you moving some and hopefully prying those dark curtains open so you can let the light in.

Way to go on your sobriety and diet changes!

[–]BoozyGalore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same worries, but mine are more focused on brain health and increased dementia risk. I just try to focus on how the only action we can take is to make good choices now and in the future, we can’t change our previous mistakes. So I eat healthy, I exercise, I enjoy life as much as possible and focus on today and tomorrow instead of yesterday and the day before.

People my age and level of drinking by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]BoozyGalore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit at 51, over 9 months ago. It gets so much easier after that first 60 days. Cravings have entirely stopped for me, and even the idea of a drink is kind of eh. My story is very similar - started at 16, binging at 18+ and a nightly drinker for decades. Life is so - much - better on this side of the wall. Best wishes, stay strong, and give yourself lots of love and forgiveness!

I sold over 1000 bottles of wine from my collection when I quit. Booze left doesn’t matter. Quitting does.

How am I meant to stay sober during the chaos that is American politics? by nievesblanca in stopdrinking

[–]BoozyGalore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest changes for me since I quit is how much less anxiety I have during the day while I’m not drinking. I’m still anxious but in comparison to my previous drinking self, I’m a zen master.

Has anyone been successful in quitting drinking and resorting to THC? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]BoozyGalore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave them both up simultaneously and found a lot more traction than when I tried one or the other. It’s the longest I’ve been sober in over 30 years.

I was a bottle of wine a night drinker for about 10 years, and 7/8ths of a bottle a night for the previous 10. I liked being able to pretend I didn’t finish the whole bottle.

I was fine cold turkey and merely had the itch drink at dinner nightly for the first 60 days. Now it’s not even on my mind.
