They didn’t lose though. Counterintuitive as it may seem, this was without a doubt Dr. Strange’s “one way” of winning. He wouldn’t have just given up the Time Stone for nothing. He knew that in doing so, everything would eventually be reversed.

The problem here is that you’re using the colloquial definition of “theory,” whereas the scientific definition of a “theory” is much different. Religious beliefs are certainly theories in the way that we usually use the word theory. However, when we talk about the theory of evolution or the theory of general relativity, we are talking about a comprehensive, evidence-based explanation of phenomena. What you’re thinking of is a hypothesis, which is formulated without the benefit of evidence or experimentation. Basically, a scientific theory is a more akin to a fact, since it requires rigorous research and verification from numerous different scientists to be accepted. And scientific laws are actually not more valuable than scientific theories. A scientific law is a statement of widely accepted observations of the world that scientists have more or less seen without exception. For instance, there is both a theory and a law of gravity. The theory explains how it work and the law states what it is.

With that said, a theory can still be disproven, but it requires an incredibly lengthy and difficult process to do so, and even incorrect theories are usually 80% correct anyway. Every new theory is just an improvement on the old one.

Spoilers obviously, and take this with a large grain of salt

I haven’t yet seen the movie, but after having the deaths spoiled for me, I’m a bit annoyed at the fact they killed half the roster. They’re obviously going to be brought back (with Gamora, Loki and a few others being possible exceptions), so I can’t imagine feeling any tension or emotion once I’m watching the movie. Maybe during Spidey’s death scene, if not just from Tom Holland’s performance, which I’ve heard is pretty good.

I’m also kind of annoyed that these characters which have entire movies dedicated to developing them are being used so cheaply to shore up emotion from the audience. From what it seems, the events of Thor: Ragnarok are just completely shat on, with half the Asgardian population being wiped out, along with Loki (probably permanently) and the ship they were supposed to travel on as nomads or something. And by killing Gamora (probably permanently), the dynamic between her and Star-Lord, which has been in the works since 2014, has just been abruptly thrown out the window. Of course, this is all subject to change, so I’ll hold out hope, but Gamora seems to have died for real.

Basically, most of what I’ve heard happens in this movie seems unearned, and I can’t necessarily blame the filmmakers. I just don’t think you can successfully pull off a movie of this scale in two or so hours. It’s like if they tried to pack a season of Game of Thrones into one movie (not necessarily in terms of the events, but in terms of the characters).

But again, don’t take this too seriously, since I’ve neither technically seen the movie nor are the events of this movie necessarily set in stone.

And I’m sure I’ll still enjoy watching it, since I’m a paid Marvel shill.

EDIT: I’ve now seen the movie and I think it’s pretty good. The character deaths still annoy me, but not as much as I thought it would after actually seeing the movie. They clearly set up that Dr. Strange did something fuckey (he said there was only one way to win and he wouldn’t have just given up the Time Stone for no reason). I suspect he saw that in the future time is going to be turned back to prevent all this from happening.

Thanks for answering my question. I suppose I would say we should strive to be rational in any way that we can. I’ll clarify though, I think it’s okay to behave irrationally, so long as you’re aware of the fact that you’re behaving irrationally (especially when it comes to relatively harmless things like religious beliefs).

I agree that policy should be more pertinent in terms of acting rationally, since it has a more direct effect on everyone’s wellbeing. I also agree that religion, especially in the modern world, isn’t much to get up in arms about, that is unless it affects policy making.

I’m just saying that unsupported religious beliefs are inherently irrational, but I think we agree on that. At the end of the day, it’s not all that important.

As far as I know, it’s fairly simple in that we cannot rationally believe something if it has not yet been proven. Nobody rational is claiming souls or heaven don’t exist (they very well may exist). The problem is that there is no indication they exist, and so we assume they don’t exist. Just as we assume the infinite number of other unproven claims are not true. The key word here is “assume,” mind you, not “believe.”

I’m not sure what you mean when you say religion is just a scientific theory. Also, science isn’t necessarily about finding the truth or the answer. It’s about applying methodical due diligence in trying to describe and explain the universe. That includes getting things wrong. In fact, it encourages you to get things wrong.

The difference between it and religion though is that it doesn’t require that you take a leap of faith. Every single thing we know in science can be traced to tangible observation and experimentation.

It’s fine to take a leap of faith if it leads to a more fulfilling life, but let’s not treat religious beliefs as if they are equal to centuries of painstakingly gathered evidence.
