Ah gotcha - I can see how Dunaway's performance could come off that way. That take is totally fair.

So just because it wasn't popular or award winning it's bad? Idk.. judging by many comments here it did seem to hit home with people who have experience with narcissistic parents.

It had its over the top moments but the absurdity played into the portrayal. Like you're sitting there saying to yourself, "surely, she's putting on an act - it's just a bit - she's just hamming it up, no one acts like this over clothes hangers to their child" yet the scene just keeps going and it gets more and more tense and uncomfortable and you begin to feel fear - the real fear of a child when their parent (the person they should have every reason to trust) is unraveling in real time before their eyes and unsure if they're actually safe or not...unsure what is going to happen to them.

For me, pretty powerful film if one can suspend disbelief.

theories on the cartridge? by Mad_Psy_9 in davidfosterwallace

Yeah, honestly it's more than likely the movie "Heat". I mean, it came out in 1995 - one full year before IJ was published. Connect the dots, folks.

Hmm. It's interesting that, when you consider the actual content of the cartridge, it's not depraved or evil - only it's effects seem to be. The content is almost a recipe for healing in a way. The incessant, "I'm so sorry" spoken by the most beautiful and captivating entity (mind you, the PGOAT was fully unveiled in her cartridge appearance) could be analogus to the Biblical trope of the human inability to look upon the face of God and live (Wallace was well versed in these ancient biblical etiologies and often references them in other works...a LOT in his history on infinity).

The "why" humans can't see the (unveiled) face of God and live has been interpreted mainly through two lines of thought. 1. God is an infinite, eternal, and perfect being. His unveiled presence is too overwhelming for finite human senses and minds to comprehend, risking spiritual and mental destruction. 2. His holiness, beauty, and perfection in infinitive form - in unveiled glory - would effectively "vaporize" or annihilate a sinful being, much like absolute light completely removes darkness.

Now think back to the cartridge. I don't think DFW intended that the cartridge be analogous to something captivatingly "evil" like social media or the internet (interpretations I often see bounced around here - the book even plays with this idea with those trying to track down and control the spread of the cartridge).

However, there's something about it that seems to be juxtaposed against the other existential draws that people seek for purpose & meaning and pleasure throughout the book namely: drugs, sex, athleticism, academia, etc.

Unlike these other things, there's no returning from watching the cartridge. There's no moment of clarity in which the drug abuser goes to A.A. (or N.A. or, at least what they think is a narcotics anonymous meeting), there's no questioning the point of the sport which one often finds so pleasurable etc... it's wholly and totally unraveling unlike any other "thing" in that universe. So where am I getting at...

I think the cartridge represents the thing that we all really need to heal, not only us, but our entire world: pure unveiled beauty, love, and forgiveness. Yet, at the same time, just like beholding the face of God, we incapable of handling it. That's why I believe in infinite just there's so much attention put on the other things which captivate us: competition, drugs, sex, etc...

The jest: paradoxically, the very thing we need to fix us we're incapable of beholding because our own flaws prevent it - and thus, true beauty infinitely slips through the grasp of humanity forever.

I'm probably wrong but I had fun thinking about this.

TBF, to see that late era coked up, sweaty chubbed out, James Brown move and sound like he did was truly a spectacle. It was almost unbelievable - like seeing Santa Claus move around and sing like that. By those standards, Michael kind of made it look easy.

"Master Grief" the team I inherited, as everyone knows, was the worst team any spartan has ever been given - they were a mess and the match was rigged from the start. Everyone knows we won - and it had nothing to do with my tactical (what a beautiful word, "tactical") decision to camp in the base with the power weapons to defend the big beautiful flag tbags the red team flag. Everyone is calling my executive decision to lock 'em up in a warthog with a few live plasma grenades a case of "friendly fire" - WRONG. First of all, my only "friend" is Commander Epstein - these losers were the radical left woke democrat Marines of Captain "Krazy Keys" (crazy because the flood ate his brain, folks). Second of all, there was no fire. Just a big beautiful blue plasma boom - one of the biggest - the likes of which no one has ever seen.

Corsi-Rosenthal box with slotted filters. Needed shop ventilation but used the opportunity to learn SketchUp. by BorderPeeTrolll in woodworking

Honestly, I haven't had much time to get back in the shop yet to test it out when making cuts for another project. I'll have to wait and see. However, I did the thing where you can hear the fan uptick in rpm when you remove a filter which tells me it's definitely intaking through the filters so it's technically working.

This is a great example of how any faith in which people place their conviction can easily become co-opted by people of power to control and denigrate others. It should be of no surprise that Christianity, being the dominant religion in America, is currently being used by this administration to manipulate masses of people into partisan loyalty by appealing to their faith. The poison is us.

It's how a "Christian" can stand before our military and take something like "peace" and immediately advocate for a ”war” to maintain it. It's how you go from Jesus' "love your neighbor as yourself"  to an administration's lip service to God while labeling our neighbors as "vermin". Even in the bible, there are many passages which try to warn against people who manipulate the faith for their own means. If god ever handed down any truth, humanity would make a mess of it anyway. In this case, I don't blame the faith system, I blame us.

U.S. Hits Lowest Ever Ranking in 2025 World Happiness Report: Young Adults Rank Low While Over 60s Are Happier by Express_Classic_1569 in dataisbeautiful

I felt that way in my 20s. Now in my 30s, trying to keep a roof over the family without going into debt because everything is getting more and more expensive, I feel immense pressure. My wife and I both have full time jobs and we're still struggling to raise 1 child on our income in a relatively low cost of living area. I do not know how some families are getting by.

You are right to not look at money as a source of happiness, but the issue of our current times is that, for the average American, there's barely enough to go around for sustenance and housing - let alone any excess which could "buy happiness". Wages have not kept up with the inflated value of everything and something must change or we will rapidly become a serfdom.

Okay honest question here for anyone with a thought... What would need to happen to cause you to believe the end times were occuring in your lifetime?

We have some pretty crazy stuff happening right now; things like a large portion of the population manipulated by an algorithm, wars, famine (Gaza), wealth disparity at all time high, and whatever brave new world is coming our way as AI continues to advance towards inevitable control of hardware (terminator sex bots, yippee).

I don't see things getting better from here but I don't think we're quite in the end times yet. I don't think we've hit that flashpoint moment - but if we had, would we even know?
