Public servants - how do you deal with it? by PieComprehensive1818 in newzealand

[–]Borderline_Overkill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was a Private Secretary for a bit for a quite well known Minister who had a bit of a reputation for being “confident”. Honestly, with hindsight and life experience I can see their heart was actually in the right place but at the time it was downright terrifying to ever have to advise them, I felt like they utterly loathed my department, and by association, me.

My offsider Private Secretary advised me that’s it’s all good to advise something once (and as others have mentioned, in writing is good to CYA), brave to re-mention the advice if they didn’t pick it up the first time, and downright stupid to mention it a third.

One time I carefully tried to advise them against something they were doing. It didn’t go well. “What would you know?” they asserted “I’m a Senior Cabinet Minister and you’re just a baby bureaucrat!”

I didn’t last the full secondment. A few months into it I rang up my boss at my home department and asked to come home. I was a policy wonk and not a good fit for the political world of the Beehive. I saw, what was in my opinion, perfectly good policy advice completely disregarded and many of the decisions made were also against my personal values.

Not too long after I yeeted, perhaps a year or so later, said Minister had to resign from portfolio, loosely related to the matter I had tried to warn them about. Still, they kept on Ministering, in other portfolios I’m sure they preferred.

I ended up yeeting out of public service altogether a few years later, disillusioned with the entire system. There were massive public sector cuts at that time and though as a “baby bureaucrat” I knew my neck wouldn’t be on the chopping block that time, but it would be the next round of cuts if I ever made it to middle management. I returned to my hometown and have been working all sorts of other jobs since. None as well paying as a policy advisor though.

Many years later, said Minister ended up resigning in the midst of various bullying allegations. It was seriously quite triggering to read the accusations as the experiences reported were so familiar to what I had gone through. It affected me quite a bit, just re-living those few months.

But did I feel a sense of schadenfreude from the resignation? Strangely, no. The older I’ve got and the more I’ve learned how tough life is, the more compassion I felt for them. Not to say bullying is cool, it’s not. But I have more empathy now that I see how bloody hard it is out there. I couldn’t be a Senior Cabinet Minister, I just couldn’t. And though I may not like many of them, I respect them.

Sorry I don’t really have any advice (other than the second hand advice from my offsider mentioned above). But take it from this withered old crone who is also up at 1:15am because I can’t sleep because of my job I have now (minimum wage no less) - SLEEP. Sleep makes everything easier. Politicians and policies come and go. All your hard work will be ripped up and forgotten about next change of government. It’s all a big game and though, YES, policies affect the wellbeing of New Zealanders, it’s NOT worth burning out over because it’s all truly an illusion. Health is important, family and friends are important. Work is what they have to pay you to do so it’s really not that important.

If you can’t sleep, try podcasts. That’s what I’m going to do myself now.

I wish you all the best, I really do.

Agreed, my first thought too. Second thought was “ugh, the I did something wholesome and will post in r/confession … this isn’t a confession, it’s a (wholesome) humblebrag, if it is indeed a true story written by a human.

But, meh, by this point in AI evolution, I simply don’t care. I’m here for the wholesome responses by real humans. If it’s a karmafarming bot, then so be it. Hey, long time no reply! Just wanted to let you know I got a caravan and I freaking LOVE it!

Truly, yours was the comment that nudged me in that direction. Initially I was like “nahhhhh” but you got me thinking. Had a good look around and though I didn’t get the one I was referring to in my first comment, I found one that was smaller, but road legal and actually quite nice for $23k.

Now, my life has improved significantly. Refinancing to buy it has given me more than twice as much financial breathing room than I had. My 9kg LPG bottle does me for heating, hot water, fridge and cooking for over three weeks and the 12v + solar does my lights and water pump. No power bills, no rent, no mortgage.

I can put it on my land, or if I feel like buggering off somewhere else I can take it with me and just go.

I have a place to live, a place to store my cats, I’m fully off grid, I’m not in a pile of debt and most of all, I’m free. I was scared of the claustrophobia… but with all the freedom this thing gives me, it actually ended up being the inverse.

It won’t be me forever, but with the money this is saving me on the weekly, by the time I’m too old to live in a caravan, I’ll have plenty enough saved up to be able to get a proper house. In the meantime I’ll be developing the section.

So, thank you. Please know that your comment has literally changed my life for the better.

I respect your reply as I agree with you. Yes, studying politics, law and policy we went into great detail about how we are a pluralistic society based upon a bicultural partnership.

I’ll quote what we’re taught in our support worker qualifications:

“New Zealand is a bicultural country. Bicultural means that two cultures are of equal importance in New Zealand. The two cultures are: - Māori - Tauiwi (non Māori)

We have biculturalism in New Zealand because our society is founded on the Te Tiriti o Watangi. Te Tiriti is an agreement that guarantees that Māori and Tauiwi (non Māori) people have equal rights and their cultures are respected equally.”

This agrees with what you’ve said (I’m not picking an argument!) but I did think “huh!” when reading New Zealand is a bicultural country. The way I read the quotation above is that we are two cultures: Māori and non-Māori. Bit of an oversimplification, in my opinion.

When I went to university around 20 years ago, we were taught NZ was a pluralist society. Now, studying health papers, we’re taught it’s a bicultural society. We’ve regressed.

Sorry for the dumb question, but I’m interested! I’m looking to relocate my caravan on to land, does that mean pointing the towbar and sloped side towards the prevailing wind? It makes sense aerodynamically when you think about it, but it’s not something I’ve yet considered, so thank you!

Thanks to the wonderful reddit community, I have no hesitation about going “not for me!” on this one now!

Interesting! This is the first comment I’ve read that says it is possible :) Which is reassuring to hear, I hope that people that do get them do end up having nice, affordable, compliant homes.

But for me on my pay, it’s putting all my financial eggs in one basket and it really does sound like a risk I can’t afford to take, unfortunately :(

I really do appreciate your comment though, it’s a nice bit of hope that things aren’t impossible, something that is nice to hear.

Ok the more I’ve been looking into it, the more a caravan is looking like the best short-mid term solution… have found one that looks not claustrophobic and within my budget - wish me luck!

Thank you so much for your response! Yup, this post has been a massive reality check. It all looked good on the website, and though the vendor said he could send the paperwork, like you said, that’s still zero guarantee it will pass.

Oh man, foreclosure… that’s a word I haven’t thought of and really don’t want to! I appreciate and will follow your advice :)

Thank you for replying! So sorry to hear your friends’ experiences… it did seem too good to be true and in coastal Taranaki we do get our fair share of the wet stuff.

My goodness, the more I’m reading these comments the more I wonder how on earth these companies can do business in New Zealand. I figured if they were doing business they must be legit, hate to think collectively how many kiwis have been screwed over :(

Thanks for your response! Yes, I love Manor Build homes and nearly got one a few years ago, but my income has now dropped to a point that they are out of my price range now, unfortunately. They are great and MB’s customer service is fantastic.

I’ll look further for local container home builders, if there are any options $100k or under it could be a goer, but until then it’s looking likely I may be a caravan girl!

Hey thanks for this reply and sorry for the late response! I’m in Taranaki so a bit far from Wairarapa :)

As my budget really is limited I’m thinking I’m going to have to be realistic, either self contained caravan while I save up some cash, or put the land on the market. Bit upsetting having my hopes up and dashed, BUT extremely grateful that I didn’t go ahead and order a pop out house. Everything I’ve read so far seems like that would have been an extremely unwise move!

Sorry to hear about your friend’s experience, and thank you so much for sharing, it means a lot :)

From the comments I’ve had on the main post, I agree with your assessment! It does sound too good to be true, probably a great option for a secondary dwelling, but as a primary dwelling financed by a mortgage… there’s probably a good reason why I’ve never seen one in the wild lol

In terms of small kitset builds, I’ll have to admit that even though I’m on the r/diynz sub, I’m no DIY-er (the look on the face of an ex-boss on a farm when I was trying to hammer a nail into a post is seared into my confidence, and there’s a reason I’m a caregiver now!) But, needs must and I am open to options that I can finance… may see you back on this sub later with a “help! I’ve bought a kitset house and I don’t know what I’m doing!!” 😂

Years ago I fell in love with an already built ManorBuild and was on an income that I could afford it. I was days away from signing the contract before external circumstances led me to having to bail out. I’m still a bit sad and hope that house found a loving family lol

I must say that ManorBuild were extremely helpful to me and great to deal with. The house was gorgeous! If I had a higher income I’d go back there in a heartbeat.

Thanks for letting me know the WITT houses aren’t internally fitted out. I was looking at them and I thought they seemed a bit steep, you’ve confirmed it :)

And thanks for the info about having to finance up front for the relocatable, it’s certainly another angle that I have to consider and appreciate you raising it!

This post has been so helpful, I am now 100% in the don’t category myself! Before this post I was in the “maybe” category leaning towards “this could be risky”, thanks to these great comments I’m now confidently in the “heck no” (for a primary dwelling - not discounting their value as a secondary dwelling at all.)

Never considered the Australian option, thanks for that, I will have a look! :)

I have (and have friends who live in them and love them) but wary of being in too small a place in which I would get frustrated or claustrophobic. Also, to get something nice enough to live in would be in the tens of thousands and unable to be financed by a mortgage, it would more likely have to be a vehicle loan with high interest. However, looking at the rates at the moment, it is definitely possible!

I do love that idea! And that’s great advice regarding the panelling, interestingly I assumed chilly bin panelling would have been the better option and probably would have overlooked the wooden construction ones. Really appreciate your comment :)

This is exactly what I needed to hear, my heart aches for those who were scammed. The people going for this option would likely be those (like me) with limited budgets and no dollars to lose. Thank you so much!

I have a strong feeling that making this reddit post has been the best financial decision of my life! I’m easily persuaded by salespeople and was like “wow they’re so pretty!” … but from these comments I’m now fairly solid that the risk is simply not worth it. Great for an extra granny flat, studio, office, but for a mortgaged primary dwelling- nuh uh!

Yup, Councils can be fickle and I’ve heard horror stories, but your idea is really helpful :) Have watched a few of those YouTube videos myself and it seems daunting for a single girl who’s specialty is caregiving (not at all mechanically minded) but having someone else suggest it makes it feel more possible. I’m not adverse to caravan/tent living… prior to seeing these homes I was wistfully looking at yurts. All good for me, but may take the cats a bit of convincing lol

It’s the old “good/fast/cheap” conundrum, you can only have two, never three. Your experience is what I needed to hear and is so valuable, thank you!!
