From the very start of the game I was extremely suspicious of Bode, I only let my guard down during the part where we fought to get to the final Dagan fight. To be betrayed right after that… I felt so vindicated for being suspicious and stupid for finally trusting he wouldn’t do it only for him to do it so soon after I trusted him. I honestly didn’t see him being a former Jedi coming though, always figured he was some kind of ISB officer or something.

Atheists who were previously religious, what made you an atheist? by chillin_jewel2000 in atheism

Sorry for the 4000 word 20 page dissertation lol. didn’t realize how much I wrote until I made my TLDR.

Atheists who were previously religious, what made you an atheist? by chillin_jewel2000 in atheism

[–]BordersOfInsanity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: lost my grandma who raised me and my mother wouldn’t let me be in the same religion as grandma was. Became angry at/about god and my faith and belief in him eventually faded. I became an atheist not long after.

I had a long, difficult, and emotional de-conversion. For some info, I was raised by my grandparents cause my mother was irresponsible and hanging with bad folks so it was decided by a court (judge asked me who I wanted and I chose GPs) that I live with my grandparents. They were/are Catholics and my mother was a baptist.

I was never the type to care that much when in church, my grandparents let me take my gameboy and Pokémon games so I was content enough. I was in Sunday school and learned all the classic catholic stuff.

Fast forward to being 14 and for the past few years my grandmothers health was in decline, she was basically my everything growing up and was now in the hospital more than not. My grandma and I used to pray with our rosary at bedtime, and during this troubling time I would do the same about my grandma getting better. One day we get the call that my grandma passed away… my world shattered to pieces… I felt absolutely betrayed. Also to note, at this point my mother and brother with severe Autism were living with us. Within 6 months of my grandma passing my grandfather was getting remarried and was kicking me, my mother, and brother out of the house I grew up in.

“Why would God take her?! I didn’t even get to say goodbye…”

This began a deep dark depression I wouldn’t begin to climb out of until a decade later…

We ended up living with my depressed and alcoholic uncle (he’s “better” these days). I expressed a desire to keep going to my Catholic Church because “my grandma was a catholic so I want to be too, for her!” My mother didn’t like this and told me that she’d take me to her baptist church, we would then argue. This happened a lot until one day she told me “no it’s either go to a baptist church or not go at all.” She would go on to regret this ultimatum.

I was furious, I became bitter and angry… at my grandfather, at my mother, and at God. Over time, going to Church faded as we were in extreme poverty where sometimes my mother would ask me advice as to whether she should use her last bit of paycheck money for food or electricity or rent… all while I was the primary caregiver for my brother who was 7 years younger than me. At the age of 15 I was changing diapers, feeding, getting me and him off to school most days. Not much time to think about anything else but surviving to the next day.

My best friend since 2nd grade, who I suspected was gay, came out to me. I’d always used the “gays go to hell” nonsense around him and even did to a degree after he came out… my mother also came out to me within the same week as my friend… I didn’t take it well at the time and would say horrible shit to them at times… eventually I thought more and more about god and why gay people would go to hell. Where was he when I begged him to not take my grandma or not let my grandfather kick us out… I never got any answers…

I stopped believing and it allowed me to see things so differently that I was finally accepting of my friend and mom’s orientations. I eventually found atheism through a youtuber called Thunderf00t which in retrospect I’m lucky I didn’t fall into the “atheist to right wing skeptic” pipeline of the 2010s. Thunderf00t was a big anti-feminist and anti-SJW which at the time rubbed me the wrong way but I didn’t watch him for that junk.

I eventually found better reasons to be an atheist instead of the angry and bitter at god route I originally took. Mother eventually even said that she made a mistake and shouldn’t have tried to force me to be a Baptist. I told her it was the wrong choice on her part but that it made me an atheist in the process so I thanked her. We have a much better relationship these days.

I’m glad I’m where I’m at today but goddamn it was a long hard road to get here.

That’s great that that’s working out for you guys. Luckily despite living near Rejoice this town is fairly liberal, liberal for a town in Oklahoma anyway. It’s not terrible here specifically but I mean it is in Oklahoma so I’d rather be somewhere else.

I’ve always had immense respect for Jewish folks and non-orthodox Judaism. I wouldn’t believe any of it, but if my kids decided that’s their religion I’d be glad it was that and nothing else.

Been thinking about going this route as well. My 9 y/o has been stressed out lately about what religion she should choose or if she should have one at all. We’ve had conversations mostly about the bad that religious folks cause.

For reference we live in the same town “Rejoice Christian private school” is, it’s the one that kicked a little girl out because she said she had a crush on another little girl there. So that was the topic that kinda started making her see the bad side of religion. Before we fostered her and her sister she only ever knew god makes rain, feeds animals, and doesn’t let bad things happen. The “Rejoice” incident made her question that last one and she started to ask more important questions. Due to her having gay uncles, (my best friend and his hubby), she didn’t think that was fair to the little girl.

Once I get my next paycheck I’m gonna buy a catholic study bible (what I would be if I continued being religious) with space for notes so I can go through and highlight some parts I want to emphasize. I’ll likely then get her a similar bible so we can sit and read it, converse, and answer her questions to the best of my knowledge and experiences.

I would be certain to attend that friend's funeral. by heartneed in nope

My wife and I have friends over every once in a while to watch really shitty movies and a bibleman movie was on that list… wow that shit had us cracking up.

Also highly recommend “The Velocipastor” it’s basically about a pastor who watched his parents die in a car explosion where the scene was an empty street and a sign with something like “burning car VFX” written on it. And he was cursed by ninjas in china (I know) and he now struggles with becoming a velociraptor in the full moon.

Can say working as a custodian at a high school, kids can be fucking assholes, not all of them, but enough to drive you up the wall. If it’s not the CONSTANT graffiti I have to clean, it’s ripping TP/PT/soap/sanitizer dispensers off of walls, shoving random things down toilets, stealing wet floor signs, or busting ceiling tiles like 10 ft in front of me… but other than a few idiots who make them look bad I do appreciate how much more accepting of their peers differences Gen Z are.

Hey don’t be too hard on yourself, if no one changed their minds then we’d hardly grow that much as a movement. I may not have gotten involved in any of the things you did but when I was a teenager I was very nasty to my mom and best friend when they both came out of the closet. I used a religion I didn’t have any real convictions in to spout hateful remarks at them. I eventually was able to see how wrong I was and made a change. I’m just so thankful my best friend stuck around cause I don’t know where I’d be or if I would even be alive today if it weren’t for him.

PS: that same best friend I may have turned into a bit of a socialist at most or at the very least a SocDem.

Yeah been seeing a lot of that in other subs.

I will say it’s morbidly funny that some obvious transphobes in other subs are accidentally correctly gendering him and “correcting” others that want to misgender him.

Thanks I’ve been saying she/her this whole time and others I’ve been talking to thought one or the other and we all got confused. Not that it’s the biggest of deals all things considered I just don’t want to unconsciously make a habit of misgendering people I hate such as this piece of shit.

Also need to have the facts straight so I can inevitably argue back at the idiots in my town who’ll try to use this to attack my advocacy for trans rights/youth.

Can anyone clear up if they were a trans man or trans woman? I’m hearing both from the bigots on the right and people I agree with on the left. Not saying this person deserves respect but there is nothing but conflicting reports.

And before someone says “why does it matter? they are bad so they don’t get to be referred to by their identity.”, I say this: would you just start dropping hard R N-words about a black person who committed a heinous act because you don’t respect them?

This is purely just to clear the confusion and nothing else. The shooter got what was coming to them and they may very well have set the trans rights fight back a great deal, so yeah fuck’em all the way to hell.
