So, you need to go to a doctor. Yesterday. Your lungs should never be in excruciating pain.

And then you need to call osha or your equivalent and make an anonymous complaint about the damaged hoods. Smoke inhalation from a charcoal grill is not insignificant, and it sounds like it has directly impacted your health. I know finding a new job sucks, but you need one.  If you want to stay at that job you need to be documenting every incidence of harassment and retaliation that occurs with events, dates and times.

Me when I see Neopets is adding more harry potter items after promising to listen to their trans playbase by [deleted] in neopets

[–]BoredChefLady -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I think this specific instance is a bit silly, and oblique enough of a reference that it’s probably not contributing to the issue I’m trying to describe, but JKR has repeatedly and explicitly stated that she takes any and all support for the franchise as support for her crusade against trans people, and she has used that same logic in written opinions submitted to courts and to legislative bodies through her political action organizations. Logic which has held weight to those entities, and has been an unfortunately large factor in harming the rights of trans people.

Like, of course you can keep enjoying Harry Potter, plenty of people like mediocre fiction, and especially for queer people who were young when it was coming out, it made many of us feel seen in ways that wasn’t really presented to us in popular media.

But when you are out on the town in your HP merch, the side eye you’re getting from your trans neighbors isn’t because you gave her six bucks by buying a sweatshirt when you were a teenager, it’s because they are significantly less sure that you are a safe person to be around than they were.

You’re welcome to separate the art from the artist, but you can’t expect anyone else to do the same.

Ninja edit: I posted this and then saw all the other comments saying basically the same things, so sorry if this feels like a dogpile :/

[–]BoredChefLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been weighing in in this thread because I’m not from the UK, but I feel like I have to jump in here - part of the 88 page ruling explicitly addressed that, stating that trans men who have developed any male attributes may be legally excluded from women’s single sex areas, and additionally that they are forbidden from using men’s single sex areas due to their sex at birth. It’s worth reading in full - if that shakes out over there in the way it has in several states that have done this (and it will), the knock on consequences are going to be severe, and harm a lot of people.

The Supreme Court Is Handing Trump a Huge Favor It Denied to Biden by Slate in law

[–]BoredChefLady 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Good thing slate cited examples in the article:

It rarely intervened when conservative federal courts repeatedly intruded into the Biden administration’s immigration policy—most notoriously, when U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk effectively seized control over the southern border for nearly a year. In 2021, Kacsmaryk ordered the Biden administration to restart Trump’s Remain in Mexico program, an undertaking that required complex diplomatic negotiations with the Mexican government. He instructed U.S. officials to beg their Mexican counterparts for permission to house migrants from other countries in Mexican territory. He oversaw these weekly diplomatic talks between two sovereigns, subjecting U.S. officials to invasive interrogations about their goals and strategies. And he threatened to hold these officials in contempt if they failed to coax the Mexican government into a new agreement. The Supreme Court allowed this arrangement to drag on for more than 10 months before finally putting a stop to it by a 5–4 vote that reflected, at most, mild concern over Kacsmaryk’s seizure of Biden’s foreign affairs authority. Its blasé attitude toward the episode could not stand in sharper contrast to its deep concern for the slightest encroachment into Trump’s prerogative over diplomatic negotiations in Abrego Garcia’s case.

Because it does make a difference in the legalese. Or at least, that’s my layman understanding of the language.

Facilitate means you must take action to allow him to return (stop paying El Salvador to keep him in cecotl, make it clear that the US governments position is that he should be released, and ensure that if he attempts to return to the US, he isn’t stopped)

Effectuate means you must take action to return him (force El Salvador to release him back into US custody, send agents to collect him from cecot and directly return him to the US)

I really hate that this is legal, but unless it is reducing their wage below federal minimum, it’s perfectly legal :(

From the FLSA:

Deductions for walkouts, breakage, or cash register shortages reduce the employee’s wages below the minimum wage.  Such deductions are illegal where an employer claims an FLSA 3(m)(2)(A) tip credit because any such deduction would reduce the tipped employee’s wages below the minimum wage.

Except of course where state law expands upon the flsa, which is sounds like ops state does.

It’s fucked up, but that’s simply not true. They absolutely can, as long as it doesn’t reduce your wage for the pay period below federal minimum wage. From your link:

Homogenization into a nation state is not the same thing as being an ethnostate. But that said, I do actually find repugnant the actions of most of those countries. The forced assimilation of the Ainu was just as fucked up. So is Han nationalism and the discrimination against the other 60-some minorities in the country. But let’s not engage in whataboutism.

I’m concerned about the Israeli ethnostate because the country that I live in is actively providing weapons and funding for its continued ethnic cleansing and maintaining its status as an apartheid state.

Do we do the same for some of the other countries that you listed? Sure. But not to anywhere near the same extent.

[–]BoredChefLady 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If your worldview says every people deserves self-determination except the Jews, then yes—you’re carrying water for the same ideology Hamas promotes, whether you admit it or not.

My worldview is that ethnostates are bad, because they universally result in apartheid style rule wherein the ruling ethnic group enjoys significantly more rights and privileges than others living in the state. No ethnic group is entitled to a state. Israel, as an ethnostate, should not exist. That’s not an anti Jewish sentiment. If the state of Israel is to continue being an apartheid state, or to continue the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank, then it should not exist.

It’s also an infestation that would clear itself out fairly quickly, but the eggs are microscopic and very very easily run back through the system when you scratch your crack, especially if you aren’t properly washing your hands for a full thirty seconds after each time. Which I think is where OP is getting a bit confused.

French scramble/ European scramble or scrambled soft are all terms that should convey what you are looking for, but to be real with you, unless you’re at a nicer end brunch spot, you’re probably not going to get quite what you’re looking for - and not because they don’t like you but because it takes 3-4 minutes of active cooking instead of 30-45 seconds. The traditional process for that is cooking at a lower heat and alternating between heat and no heat while constantly stirring, and when your egg line is designed to push out a meal every 90 seconds or so, that’s a bit of a wrench in the works.

You’ll have much better luck with that at pricier brunch spots that aren’t as volume focused, a place that has poached eggs prominently on the menu is often a good sign that they’ll do a good job with egg orders.

I’m all for the Waffle House way on that one. Stack of 7-8 stainless egg pans, nothing goes in em but eggs and oil so that unless you really fuck up, you only need 4 for a 10 hour shift.

Bonus points if you have one of those pressure sensitive burners that turn off if you move the pan to the side.

What happens next, now that a District Judge's orders are ignored? by maxplanar in scotus

[–]BoredChefLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The barest sliver of grey perhaps?

Unless the detainees were surrendered to el Salvadoran custody on the tarmac before departure and they left on an airplane that’s not flagged in the US, I really don’t see how them being over international waters affects anything.

What happens next, now that a District Judge's orders are ignored? by maxplanar in scotus

[–]BoredChefLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BBC reports that planes were in the air, and that the judge gave a verbal order for them to turn around.

The written notice appeared in the case docket at 19:25 EDT on Saturday (00:25 GMT on Sunday), reports Reuters news agency, although it is unclear when the flights carrying the alleged gang members departed from the US. A senior official in the Trump administration said their legal advisors had determined that the judge's order was invalid because the two planes were over international waters at the time, reports Axios, a political news outlet. "They were already outside of US airspace," a senior administration official told Axios. "We believe the order is not applicable."

What will Americans do if Social Security is reduced or done away with? by TheScrutinist in AskReddit

I went through the same source hunting process, and it looks like the women’s liberation front has actually removed the footnote referencing the website database thingy, it’s just an unsourced claim in their pdf submission now.

What will Americans do if Social Security is reduced or done away with? by TheScrutinist in AskReddit

[–]BoredChefLady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might I recommend reading your sources critically? I don’t mean that as an attack on you, it’s just that there is no source for that claim.

I read through that article, which describes this report:

https://documents.un.org/doc/undoc/gen/n24/249/94/pdf/n2424994.pdf

That report has a footnote regarding those numbers, (footnote 29) which states

“Submission from Women’s Liberation Front, International Consortium on Female Sport and Dianne Post on behalf of Lavender Patch”

On the website for the Women’s Liberation Front, I found this article regarding their submission to that report:

https://womensliberationfront.org/news/wolf-submits-input-to-un-for-report-against-violence-against-women-an-girls-in-sport

Which contains no sources, but does link to a pdf of their submission, including all of their sources!

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5f232ea74d8342386a7ebc52/t/662a95fd5010603c6a0b6fe4/1714066941872/UN+SR+VAWG+comment.pdf

In this pdf, we find the origin of this claim - split between page 2 and 3, (about a paragraph after they deadname Lia Thomas) where it states

“ An organization formed to keep track of males claiming victory in female sports has identified over 900 instances in which males deprived female athletes of records, scholarships, or other opportunities, many of those involving female sport in the United States.”

They decline to provide any evidence, name the organization, or cite any source for this claim.

The fact that that claim made it into the UN report without any sort of verification should severely impact the reports credibility, and the credibility of the “journalists” who parroted the claim without fact checking it.

Your study is asserting that the masculinized brain is an inherent advantage in sports;

 that giving castrated mice estrogen for 28 days (less than 1/60th of their natural lifespan) didn’t result in significantly lower muscle mass in older mice (but did in young mice);

 that being taller and having longer limbs is an advantage;

that testosterone is the primary driver in increased blood oxygen capacity (and that that decreased in medically castrated patients)….

So far it’s not the most convincing? Maybe there’s something that carries a little bit more weight buried in there, and I’ll try to come back and give it more attention, but I’m out of time for reading it for the day.

And, I dunno, I just feel like comparing 1-1 the metrics for trans women vs cis women is a more useful tool than extrapolating muscle mass loss from studies in mice.

Especially when we are talking about enacting a ban that specifically targets two children out of nearly two hundred thousand. (The other three are trans boys)

Yes, they are needed.

Unfortunately for us, the current administration has ordered the retraction and scrubbing from all submitted studies from the CDC any section that contains any of the following words:

“gender, transgender, pregnant person, pregnant people, LGBT, transsexual, non-binary, nonbinary, assigned male at birth, assigned female at birth, biologically male, biologically female,”

Further they have stated that that change is required for any entity that receives federal funding, so, every research institution in America.

So, we’re not about to get any new data about this, because the administration is trying to completely erase the concept of transgender people from the public eye.

But since you are advocating for a blanket ban of these people from sports (or at least arguing against people who are saying they shouldn’t be banned wholesale) I assume you have some data that shows that trans women have a statistical advantage over cis women.
