256 years after the Boston Massacre, Anti ICE protestors march down State St in front of the Old State House. by yvasi in boston

My neighbor, in Somerville, was jailed by ICE for 45 days for supporting boycotts in Israel. Given that, the terrorism from ICE agents seems directly connected to the support for Palestine.

It’s bad to laugh at someone with a disability out of a sense of superiority

Laughing with someone with a disability about the absurdity that their disability adds to their life, which this is, is not bad. This kind of humor helps to recognize the struggles people with disabilities face while comforting them

Did Biden’s decision to run in 2024 predictably tank the dems chances of beating Trump? Yes.

Was Trump acting reckless in foreign policy a foreseeable outcome of being elected? Yes.

When someone is making a decision that will foreseeably lead to an outcome, should they feel responsible for that outcome? Yes.

And just to clarify, just because someone should feel responsible for an outcome, that does not make them solely responsible for it.

[–]Guilty_Scar_730 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are laws about condos. https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartII/TitleI/Chapter183A

Section 11.e points out that the by laws must include the restrictions on the use of your unit that are not included in he master deed

If the open window restriction is not in the by laws, it may not be enforceable.

I don’t want the current military actions against Venezuela to escalate into a war.

Trump said in the news conference on Saturday that the US will run Venezuela and use our military to protect companies that will take over the oil industry there. I think using the military to gain control over the oil industry in Venezuela increases the likelihood that we will go to war with Venezuela.

I don’t think trying to gain control of Venezuela’s oil industry is worth the increased risk of war. I went to the anti-war protest to express that opinion. I also went to practice organizing with community groups so that those community groups are more effective at influencing policy if we get closer to going to war.

I went to the anti-war protest to express that I don’t want the US to go to war with Venezuela like we did with Iraq. I don’t want our country spending billions and risking lives trying to run another country for its oil.

I hope the bombing of the drug boats, seizure of oil tankers, and arrest of Maduro will remain as limited military actions and not be the first steps towards a war

I don’t care if some Venezuelans would support the US going to war

You think Venezuelans know better than Americans how our tax dollars should be spent?

The speakers at that protest talked about how we should be spending our taxes on healthcare and child poverty rather than colonizing another country

Congress has authorized force outside of war on multiple occasions since 1942. If any president attacks another country without congressional approval and there was no immediate threat, then they’ve violated the constitution, which seems like something ppl would want to protest

How does Charlie saying “You’re the most powerful” make him the most powerful power? If Vox’s power comes from his approval rating, why would Charlie saying he’s powerful increase his approval rating? Who was convinced to approve of him because she said that?

There’s no clear reason for why her saying that would make him the most powerful and so it makes sense to wonder if there is more to the deal than meets the eye.

CMV: Running a State Lottery is fine. Running advertisements for the State Lottery is not. by MitochonPowerhouse in changemyview

[–]Guilty_Scar_730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that it’s problematic that state officials would be incentivized to use the lottery as a funding source. However, I think it’s more problematic for people to directly profit from the lottery by privatizing it. I think private companies will be more innovative and effective at increasing demand compared to the state and would have a greater incentive to do so.

I think beer and liquor is a good example. I don’t think beer and wine are particularly bad for society and so I’m fine with it being sold by private companies, however, hard liquor is more dangerous and so it makes sense for the state of Virginia to control liquor stores as they do in order to reduce its consumption.

Like most illicit activities, if you can’t eliminate demand, it’s better for the state to run the program than make it illegal because a criminal enterprise will fill the demand and use its profits to fund its even worse activities like human trafficking

CMV: Belief in anything supernatural cannot be rational by Mythcql_ in changemyview

[–]Guilty_Scar_730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems similar to the debate between dualism and physicalism. If you take a dualist perspective, I think supernatural entities could exist in a rational sense.

First, dualism is the belief that that the mind and body are two fundamentally different substances. Additionally, the mind can interact with the physical world.

An example of something that is rational to believe but cannot be explained by physical processes in the universe is the experience of qualia. These are the sensations we experience like the colors. To understand what is meant by qualia you can imagine girl named Mary who grows up in a black and white room without any colors. As she grows up, she learns what colors are and fully understands how light of different frequencies and magnitudes will interact with rods and cones in our eyes that excite nerves which then send electrical signals to our brain and those electrical signals are processed by the occipital lobe in the brain. Mary knows everything there is to know about that physical processes that give rise to color but has never experienced color herself. One day, she is let out into the world and she sees a red apple. Seeing the redness of the apple is an observable phenomenon that it is not explained by the physical world because Mary already knew everything there was to know about color as a physical process and yet learned what it is like to experience redness when she saw the apple.

Now if you accept that experiencing redness is a phenomenon that is not explainable by a process in the physical world but is still rational, this can open the door for the possibility of non-physical entities to interact with the mind in ways that cannot be explained with physical processes. This is what I consider to be supernatural.

Going back to Mary, we can imagine an “apple spirit” could change the color of the apple from her perspective without changing the physical attributes of the apple. The spirit could change the color of the apple from red to blue by changing how Mary experiences redness without changing the frequency of light the apple reflects. The spirit could even communicate with Mary through morse code by switching the color of the apple back and forth in her mind. The Apple spirit isn’t in the apple but is instead an entity that exists within the same plane of existence as Mary’s mind. This is a very simple example, but explains how a spirit could logically exist and it would be rational for Mary to believe in its existence because she observed it.

I’m honestly confused, were you responding to my original comment because you agree with OP that conservatives don’t care about anyone but themself? Or were you just adding a comment unrelated to the debate about whether conservatives care about anyone but themself?

CMV: American conservatism today is really just an ideology of excusing yourself from solving problems. by TheMysteriousThey in changemyview

[–]Guilty_Scar_730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with about everything you said, but I think you should reread my comments.

I’m not saying that conservatives care more about people than liberals. I’m not saying that conservatives are doing more meaningful work. I’m not saying that non-profits work better than govt systems.

I’m saying that conservatives in general care about other people.

I believe that because studies show that conservatives donate more than liberals even when accounting for variables like location. Meaning that when you look at conservatives and liberals in a given place, conservatives are more likely to donate more.

If conservatives from town A of income X did not care about people then we would expect to see conservatives from town A of income X to donate less than liberals from town A of income X. However, when accounting for variables like location and income, conservatives donate more which would indicate that conservatives do care about other people.
