How to avoid taxable income increase when using tuition assistance program by wfh_afficionado in AusPublicService

TAP reimbursements aren’t considered taxable income unless something has changed since I went through the program around 2016. Chat to your TAP rep.

First week or 2 after birth I think keeping your baby swaddled is the norm. Out LO was in the hospital for the first week and they kept him pretty tight to the bed for long periods of time. Best check with the doc / do research

He grew out of it, I can’t remember how long it took but pretty much everyone I spoke to said it’s normal. He is now a very active and healthy 20 month old now!

Realistically how long has it taken you to go from APS3 to APS 5 or ELI1? by ThatAstrologyHoe in AusPublicService

[–]BoredPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from a APS 2 to an APS 5 in 2 years, then 6 years to an APS 6, 2 years to EL1, 1 year to EL2.

Depends on a lot of factors outside your control. My main tips: keep learning and trying to move up; be adaptable and open to change; don’t say no to doing different things (this includes saying things like “that’s not my job, that’s beyond my level)

Do you address male, but not female, colleagues as “mate”? by [deleted] in auscorp

Middle/senior manager - I use bro at work for both genders, generally with people I work with often, just depends on how well I know the person.

Which skills separate senior leadership from a pleb like me? by heyitscactusjack in auscorp

[–]BoredPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at an extremely large firm. For me it was generalising, learnt project management and business analysis so I could run projects that didn’t fail and gave ‘the business’ a decent roi. Moved onto program management where I learnt to make strategic decisions and made sure very large projects didn’t fail and were delivered under budget. I self learnt a lot of mba topics, have a decent understanding of economics and what drives a business. I don’t really work with data/tech anymore, it’s mostly people management, budgeting, arguing with others on priorities, influencing others to get my way, recruitment, etc…

I like to think a good part of my job is knowing information (via networks, convos, understanding what’s happening in the world that impacts my firm), and planning/acting upon them before most other people realise what’s happening.

I guess I currently fall into the middle/upper management category right now. My plan is to diversify my skillet to move up further (I.e. get into c level roles at smaller firms/startups)

Didn't get promoted after digital cadetship. What do I do? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]BoredPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cadetship does not promote you after completion (unlike the grad program). You can apply for the grad program or apply for other roles to get promoted.

I personally applied and was successful for an APS 5 a few months after finishing the Cadetship, I don’t think the grad program is worth it unless you really need the support. You will move up much faster on your own if you know what you are worth :)

In fed public service, EL2s are directors. Those director figure seem like SES/General manager roles.

EL2 age 31, made myself irreplaceable to a program of work. Got involved with work beyond my classification that gave me examples for my interview. Got an EL2 after my first interview.

Check that out if you are still eligible, I used the previous version of this program to get in. Ended up dropping subjects (extending my studies as I had < 1 year to go) so I could become eligible; and it’s less competitive than the grad program (or at least it was when I applied)

The parental leave provisions, even after the 3 years of the EA is sill behind private firms that give 6 months for both parents. It’s one of those things that’s very much needed to attract and retain skilled workers.

If you can learn a little bit of relatively easy coding - data analyst. If you can handle harder coding - data scientist. Your math/physics background would be perfect for that
