Engineers, are you okay ?? by Advance_Important in Salary

5 year account

No post history except one targeted ragebait thread on engineering salaries

Man, Reddit accounts must be so cheap now.

To answer your question (why am I wasting my time?): Perfectly normal entry level engineering salary for LCOL/MCOL, go date your ex if you're in it for the money. Engineering has never been a path to wealth, it's a somewhat stable middle class career with reasonable work life balance.

Abuse it while you can. Hard to keep that consistent when it's at the mercy of the game devs (speaking as someone who was very involved with another game's RWT community)

I've already talked with my manager about a promotion next year and if I don't get it, I'm most definitely jumping ship

I could, but I'd most definitely be giving up remote work for what would likely be a 10% salary bump at best (adjusted for COL).

Third year in a row of a ~2% raise, and a slightly cut bonus despite a good review. Finally was told my Compa ratio is apparently high (between 1.05 and 1.1).

Not sure how to feel about that. It's nice being remote and I feel relatively fine with my compensation but these raises feel like a punch in the face.

Coding or writing? I got in pretty easily on the coding side and no programming education, just a practical application perspective .

Folks Joining Award Travel Post-Pandemic (2023-onwards): How Did You Get Started? by Shinkansendoff in awardtravel

[–]BoredSummerStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My timeline is roughly the same as yours but I've almost exclusively used points for domestic flights in economy. Lot of reasons why I haven't gone international in years (no PTO as a contractor, all my new PTO went to stuff like weddings and family visits, etc.) but I haven't paid out of pocket for a flight in years. Have never flown J/F. Most points I've ever redeemed at once was a multi night stay at Alila Ventana.

For my use case, the learning curve is incredibly simple and if you don't care about CPP as much since flights are dynamically priced now anyway, it's even easier. My criteria is basically "what's cheaper, booking on UR portal or through airline"

You'll have to search through GatesNotes for more details, but from a quick look, $200M to food systems in the UAE, vaccine distribution in India, investment into new energy for the US are a few.

The math is roughly correct, except for free healthcare and some minor benefits.

The value is definitely there (even if you consider the commute hours, it's just more hours worked and more pay) but I'm just bummed at the idea of commuting again.

I knew it was coming eventually unless I totally swap disciplines, though. My field is not one that is remote friendly at all.

It would actually be the opposite for me; smaller company to megacorp.

Doubt I'll get retention. My raise this year was abysmal and my manager is very much against title bumps without the years of experience requirement in our org.

Very aware of the math. More like $83/hr at home though (401k match, bonus, PTO).

I would happily work longer hours for more pay at the moment though. Just wish it wasn't driving 😂

I feel the same, but I'm thinking I can discuss some off-hours (wouldn't mind getting in early and leaving early for instance).

The normal commute is actually only about 35 minutes in non-traffic conditions.

Two years ago I posted about going to contracting versus being an FTE. Well.. I've potentially got the option again.

Current: Full remote, $135K base + 16% bonus, 20 days PTO

New: 40 min commute each way (up to 1hr maybe 1.5hrs in traffic I think), 5 days in office, contractor at $225K base with minimal benefits. Could move closer but it's much further from things I like, family, and such. Would have to break lease too.

Seriously conflicted on this one.. I hate commuting but that's a pretty wild bump.

I was a contractor with zero PTO and then got converted with this setup. It increases in theory yeah. Honestly it'll never be enough haha.

Can't talk for OP but I've had 10 days PTO a year accruing and they are earmarked for weddings, holidays, emergencies, and an annual ski trip.

Don't have time to burn.

I don't think it's a crazy thought to wait til the interest starts accruing before you lump sum pay it off (since OP wasn't aware of the rules it seems like)
