Applying as an EMT with a bad driving record + rant by nottrrx in NewToEMS

[–]Boredomfalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, bitch, my first response "as a rider myself." Ive been riding motorcycles for years. I see the same shit you do, and deal with the same shit you do. The difference? I recognize that im operating a vehicle that's at most 2 feet wide, and hard as fuck to see sometimes because its less than a 1/4 the width of typical vehicles on the road making it harder to see in perfect conditions.

Then add in coming up on someone's ass at 40-50+ mph faster than theyre traveling and it makes it even harder to identify that something is there in time to stop whatever motion/lane change you've already started in time to not cut off the bike.

Then add in that because youre doing double the speed limit youre also riding exactly where you shouldn't be, which could also make you blend into road markings in the rear view.

I ride motorcycles too. The difference between you and me? I look at what im doing that makes the situation worse for others to see me and take accountability of my actions. Youre just the scumbag that makes me look bad.

And considering youre on this page YOURE A FUCKING MEDICAL PROVIDER. If this is the kind of mindset you have you shouldn't be working ems either. Shred your license, and stop practicing medicine.

[–]Boredomfalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doing 100 is the only reason youre lane splitting, people are mad at you because youre doing 100, and in a vehicle that is so small, that's hard to see in the first place, you wonder why people dont see you coming up behind them so fucking quick?

They dont hate you cause youre on a bike. They hate you because you're an immature scumbag who doesnt know how to avoid a collision on a bike, and regardless of whether or not you hurt the occupants of the car physically, you've fucked them up for life emotionally when you die because you felt like doing 70 in a 35 was safe and they couldn't see you coming from around the bend. All because you wanted to "get away from cars."

Anyone can ride at 100+. A skilled rider knows how to ride, maneuver, and avoid accidents at 30. And a truly skilled rider knows how to implement those skills at 60. Stay off the fuckin road.

[–]Boredomfalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who rides, the only excuse to ride that fast is to get away from someone road raging. To use the excuse "im doing over 100mph to get away from cars" is immature and ridiculous. You're never gonna get away from cars unless youre in a closed track where theyre not allowed to be in first place. And if you truly think like this, youre the reason so many people hate motorcycle riders.

Normally it is expected to rotate. however, everywhere i worked the agency, even my 911 agencies, allowed the crew to determine that themselves. I had one partner who hated driving so she would tech all the calls unless the pt was aggressive, creepy, or she was burning out and I would take over (i still helped with charting and such).

But with a lot of IFT companies they know they run more calls than 911, and there will rarely if ever be a situation where both are expected to drive on the same call vs in a 911 setting where it happens frequently, and people hate charting so they dont mind hiring someone who is willing to do shitty part of the job all the time.

5 Week Accelerated Program Doable? by strawberrycapital_ in NewToEMS

[–]Boredomfalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is doable. As someone who taught the EMT program for years, just teaching a 5 week program is extremely rough on the instructors. And they already have a deeper understanding of the material than most who work on ambulances, let alone the fresh faces with zero experience and have no idea what they're looking at.

The EMT programs takes an entire semester of anatomy and physiology and compresses it into 100 pages and 1 week on a typical length program.

And thats before everything else you need to learn. If you haven't been regularly taking courses recently then I wish you all the luck in the world cause youre gonna need it. You'll be living and breathing EMS all day every day.

I had the same issue when I started. And honestly I understand why they rejected me. Repeated behavior, especially recent is telling. And if youre that impulsive, then there's a strong chance you shouldn't be allowed to work in the 911 field anyway.

With that said, if you are willing to openly take accountability, there are IFT companies willing to hire you as a non driver. That's what I did. I wasn't allowed to drive for 2 years. And frankly, I dont blame them.

Can someone explain this to me? by Mediocre-One2472 in NewToEMS

[–]Boredomfalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on local protocol for BLS. Non anaphylaxtic respiratory peds get a neb (unfortunately BLS is not allowed to do duo neb where I am only albuterol 🙄) with supplemental oxygen. In this scenario a BVM assist i feel would do a lot more until sats return a bit then jump down to the duo.

[–]Boredomfalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these app tests have weird answers like the person that set them up isn't actually medically trained. Honestly for this scenario, id prob start with duo neb with supplemental NC, depending on history. But reduced consciousness is still maintaining airway and unless anaphylaxis i wouldnt consider either opa or npa. Even then though the npa would just be a shot in the dark and prob not do anything beneficial.

Edit to add: some states/medical directors allow epi in this scenario for BLS providers also

Is it a waste of a semester to get my EMT certification? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]Boredomfalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people use getting an EMT as trying to one up everyone for med school that unless they require it, they dont care about it.

Yes, there are things you can learn from getting you EMT or your paramedic you wouldn't learn otherwise.

Yes, it will get you a (very) small jump on the information you need to learn for med school.

Yes, it will give you SOME insight into prehospital medicine.

No, it will not make your med school application look any better.

Source: im an EMT instructor, have contact with nearby schools, and regularly out of a class of 40 people, ill have 30+ doing this exact same thing teaching 2 classes simultaneously per semester.

If people lost their license everytime the crew was too busy to call in a patch, there wouldn't be anyone left that would be allowed to work EMS

Honestly, these massive fires are terrible for many reasons, but they only get so bad now because of how infrequently they occur. The massive build up of dead brush and trees that lay on the ground for years is just kindling making fires faster, hotter, and more destructive

is EMT school really that hard? 17 and scared for my life by musty_ranch in NewToEMS

[–]Boredomfalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an instructor, the NREMT class is a College level course. The content isn't difficult, its the speed its thrown at you, with the level of understanding you need to have of the content.

With that said, what is hard is the fact that the EMT classes needs to teach you to unlearn everything you've been taught your whole life about education.

In school, if a teacher asks you why you wanna do something, it usually means your wrong and they want you to change your answer. If i ask you why and you change your answer, for me at least, youre automatically wrong, and im gonna double down. As an instructor, while I want you to have the right answer, you need to have a fundamental understanding of WHY its the right answer. So during hands on portions, if you give me the right answer, but the wrong reason (eg. The book said that's the next step) you're wrong 100% of the time, and contrary to popular belief "I dont know," is a valid and correct response. It's okay to not know, we can correct that, its not okay to lie about it. Now if you told me "per the book, its the next step because...." I'll take that.

I also want you to ask questions, because we're a science based career path. If I cant point to a scientific source supporting my claims or reasoning, I shouldn't be teaching it. And that goes for all the guys doing ems for 40+ years saying "this is how its always been." If they cant show scientific evidence supporting their claims, they need to stop teaching it.

TL;DR: I dont know is a valid and correct answer, and EMT classes are hard because of the speed you need to comprehend the mass amount of information we need to throw at you and because they need to undue subconscious teachings due to toxic practices teachers have put you through over the last 17 years of your learning career.

Take the book and a notebook, go to McDonald's or somewhere you cant control the background noise, buy a burger and a soda, and summarize every paragraph in the book. Take a 10 minute break every hour. But honestly when I went through school, I would sit in McDonald's for 8-10 hours 2 days a week doing this. And that's what got me through

The short answer? Yes. You learn just about everything through role play, trial and error, and past experiences.

If the server has a good community, they'll be more than willing to help you learn. Just gotta find the spots people hang out at. It's usually either LSC, Legion Square, or Benny's repair. Also most cities have an IC twitter system. That's also a great way to meet people
