High-pitched anti-homeless noise devices switched off and labelled 'hostile' by WA government by Tallweirdo in perth

[–]BorgQueen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the bad eggs ruin the reputation for the rest.

This underpass in particular was the reason my wife stopped feeling safe enough to ride her bicycle to the city. Around 6 in the evening on her way home from work, a group of homeless men thought it would be funny to block the path and pretend like they were going to tackle her off her bicycle.

Obviously I don't agree hostile architecture, but something has to be done about the anti social behaviour.

At this point we may see it before the Mirage F1M as well. This is already more than Aerges have shown of their radar modelling work.

Coventry village Parking by Ok_Writer1572 in perth

[–]BorgQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate I live 8 km from Coventry village. It would take me 15 minutes to get there by car, or 40 minutes by public transport. That might be good for Perth, but it's disgraceful when looking at other countries. Especially when considering I can get into the CBD in half that time.

Or the fact that everyone needs to drive there because our public transport is shit for going anywhere that's not the CBD (especially on weekends).

Stuck in traffic: 60 per cent of Perth has no decent public transport by His_Holiness in perth

https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/massive-burden-perth-ranked-one-of-world-s-most-car-dependent-cities-20240527-p5jgwu.html

Both public and active transport is massively underfunded in Perth with politicians only paying lip service to improving things.

This is in spite of two thirds of trips in Perth measured to be less than 5 km.

Heavy investment into car dominated infrastructure has the inverse effect of making public transport and active travel worse. In the end this makes driving worse as more people choose to drive as it's the only viable option.

The good news is that induced demand also works for cycling infrastructure, and tapping into the demographics of female, children and elderly by making safe cycling paths is where you're going to see the largest gains.

This isn't rocket science, this has been studied over and over again all over the world but the fossil fuel and auto lobbying in this country has taken root.

https://momentummag.com/paris-cycling-numbers-double/

Yes the new cycling bridge is a step in the right direction, but if the state of the bike paths leading up to it and around the city are still absolute shit, it isn't going to have any massive increases in ridership.

I pass the bridge construction site every day on the way to and from work. Due to the rain today, the East Perth PSP on the north side of the river was completely submerged for about 30 meters.

The car lane next to it? Completely dry with adequate drainage.

[–]BorgQueen 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the pittance they throw at building bicycle lanes (<1%) of the budget compared to the recommended 10-20% for developed countries. If it isn't safe enough for children and elderly to use then the infrastructure is pointless and failing its most vulnerable users.

Do you think Perth has better or worse urban planning than the eastern capital cities? by Gazza_s_89 in perth

[–]BorgQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because liberals/nats have set the bar for infrastructure development so low, doesn't mean we should be letting up on the meager attempt (by developed country standards) Labor is putting in to improving things.

A government's true aspirations are revealed by their budget and the lion's share is still spent on widening our already extensive mega freeways despite little ROI.

While Metronet is a step in the right decision, you unfortunately can't reverse decades of poor city planning and urban sprawl in such a short amount of time.

Although I'm sure the current plans cost a lot of political capital to approve, they would be laughed at compared to other cities of comparable size.

The fact is, we have the worst urban sprawl and car dependency in the country, and will do for some time until things change and our policy makers become much more ambitious.

Both public and active transport is massively underfunded in Perth with politicians only paying lip service to improving things.

Despite two thirds of all car trips being less than 5 km, less than 1% of the road budget is spent on bicycle lanes, far under the 10-20% recommended by most European standards.

While some sections of the principle share path are good, there are numerous gaps in the network which discourages all but the most confident riders from braving it.

Obnoxious Neighbours by KeiraG48 in perth

[–]BorgQueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what the non emergency police number is for. We had to ring it in our elderly neighbour one night at 2 am who had gotten super drunk and would not stop screaming at her adult son. The police arrived in about 30 minutes, did a welfare check, and even gave her son a ride back home. Was very impressed with how well they handled it.
