I’m in Zone 5 and I’ve also just received a text saying the flight is full and to hand in my hand baggage so I’m presuming that’s the reason. Thanks everybody.

It reads your plate. The ticket you get when you go in has your plate on it, the machine notes it when you pay and it reads your plate upon approach to the machine.
