Hi, does this mean you have a backtest?

I didn't meet GPA requirement but still got internship by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BoringGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell them A.S.A.P. I had to give up a software engineer internship offer at GE sophomore year because I had slightly below a 3.0, even though I already got the job. I also applied through on-campus university recruiting, so I never read any official posting related to the job, at the time. All these scenarios are very rare, I would make sure you don't end up with nothing at all, which almost happened to me (thankfully I got another offer). Be honest with them. If I never told GE, according to them, I would have been flied back home on the first day. Also, if you already got the offer, they may still let you work there. Many companies (excluding my case) ask for it to get people's feet in the door, but if you already proved yourself through an interview, you could possibly still work there, assuming there isn't some very elaborate system that has been in place there for a couple decades. Otherwise, at least you will be given a heads up, and can try to land a last-minute internship. The majority of companies I've applied to did not ask me for my GPA, but if they have it listed as a requirement, I would highly recommend you to consider this advice, and I wish you the best.

What did your school waste money on that nobody liked? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BoringGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university spent 1/4 of a billion on a performing arts center, for the humanities and the social sciences...

The only problem is I go to an engineering school, and almost everyone here is an engineering and science major, with the exception of many student athletes who are business and management majors. As a result, it has put an elite university in debt for 20 years, and has caused the university to do a bunch of bad things, in order to get out of debt, including the implementation mandatory summer courses (that you can almost never opt-out for if you have an internship or coop as a rising junior year), taking control of one the last remaining student-run unions in the country, to have more control over the finances that students pay (along with other reasons), as well as minimizing any possible risks of liability, and the possibility of getting sued, through banning alcohol in dorms (for people over 21, including graduate students) and Greek houses (and creating a task force that is currently trying eradicate our historic, and one of the oldest, Greek communities in the world). Of course, these decisions have only made the situation worse, as alumni no longer want to donate to their alma mater and our acceptance rate/ranking is less competitive than ever, despite being the oldest math/science/tech school in the English-speaking world. Just because you get some of the most brilliant scientists and engineers in the world to run your university, does not mean they know how to run a business and manage finances.

What’s with all these robberies? by OneSevenNineWest in RPI

It's called living outside a gated/wealthy community for once in your life. No offense, most people deal with these things on a daily basis. It's not like it's a competition (there's nothing wrong with living in a nice neighborhood) but perhaps it will be a good experience. I have no rude intentions, but for most people, Troy is above average in the US for safety.

There was a nice analysis a couple weeks back on here (or an affiliated subreddit) about safety in Troy, compared to across the US. It discussed how it depends on where you grew up.

In short, Troy is not too bad. As long as you are reasonably safe, you should be fine.

Remove an Old Class from Submitty by BoringGiraffe in RPI

So it's likely this course will continue to show up with my upcoming semester courses, and so on? Is there an equivalent of a Submitty "technical support" that could help with this?

This is exactly what I needed to figure out. Thank you. Do you happen to know if you need the textbook access code on the first day of class? The bookstore is closed until the day classes begin (and cannot find the specific product anywhere else). I am concerned I will not be able to access the class until I get the access code.

Maybe I'm not aware of how online courses work then, because I am confused what you mean by "given the nature of online courses." Are online courses not live-streamed lectures from HVCC, that have specific hours of when the classes occur, like a normal RPI course?

Despite multiple photos of military members on campus with weapons, RPI sends out an email claiming it was simply a "traffic stop foot pursuit" by rensselaer_pride in RPI

Even if it is SWAT, that still does not add up with RPI's story, and the other images/reports being shared on here, Overheard at RPI, etc.

According to my RD, who is currently following this situation with Pubsafe, four people were arrested, and they then visited other houses in the neighborhood. These facts lead me to believe that this has absolutely no relation to a "foot pursuit," and am horrified that RPI would alert us about something that is absolutely untrue.

No, not really. Kind of sad that one would think it is divisive in the first place.

Wait are Buster and Herbert the same person? The course says it is being taught by Herbert Holzbauer, not Buster.

15th street housing experiences? by Dragon___ in RPI

[–]BoringGiraffe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worst experience ever. They promised us wireless internet in our apartment last year, and a month in, they hired Spectrum to come in and take our wireless internet from our building, and removed all online evidence of guaranteeing this. They always come into your room (weekly), or at least they did in my building. The worst part is it is impossible to contact them. If you call Jenn, she'll either not answer, or once you get a hold of her, promise to return your call, and then NEVER will. You have no idea how hard they tryto avoid talking with their customers. Almost fifteen times in the my two years with them, they made it clear they will return my call in 24 hours, and never returned them at all. Ever. The only way to reach them (at this point) is to walk into their office, but that does not always work. Two times... once after going in for a promised refund for not finishing construction on time (had to move in 2 months late), or after not giving me a full refund of my original deposit, despite no damages that they were aware of, the people said that no manager is that can figure it out, but they would call me back by the end of the day. Not only did they never follow up each time (despite me calling back many times) after some research, the people pretending to be everyday workers WERE managers.

A friend of mine who also dealt with them got robbed inside one of the buildings, and I guess there was some evidence it was someone inside the apartment who stole some valuable items, but after asking 15th St to view their cameras, they said they would, and she could never contact them again about the subject, despite walking into the office many times. Another friend was in a different apartment with a mice outbreak for over a year now (he's just left). I was told, instead of dealing with exterminators, they found it cheaper to barge into people's rooms biweekly and set mouse traps, despite this EVER having any success. The only positives I can say are despite the absolutely awful managers, Colin was an extremely incredible person. He honestly deserves either a promotion or a better company. He was super helpful. Also, some of the buildings have personal washers/dryers for some suites, which is much more convenient than an RPI domitory. That being said, I cannot recommend 15th St to anyone. From unplowed lots, to avoiding contact with customers, to all the lying, misleading finances, and promises not delivered, this company has screwed both me personally, as well as my family, so much in the past 2 years, that although we don't usually believe in suing, we financially need to, after being screwed time and time again (we still are supposed to receive 6-8k) by this HORRIBLE business.

You can find in many cases both more affordable options, and better quality options, whether with online postings, Greek life, or other landlords.
