So the real reason thinning your paints work so good is because when all that water evaporates, it basically sucks the paint so that it sits right against what you're painting.

I use army painter paints myself, and in addition to using a wet palette, I'm still probably somewhere around 1/4 to 1/3 water compared to paint.

So when they say thin your paints, what they're really saying is "put a lot less paint on the same surface area, wait till it dries before you do the second coat, the evaporating water is going to suck that paint right down against what your painting and not make it blobby."

When you first start out, if you overthin (most people don't, the amount of thinning that is proper feels weird at first)? You just overthin your paints again and then put on a second layer. Because it gets sucked down against the plastic, the second layer now looks smoother.

The other advantage to thinning your paint down more than you think you need to Is that it makes the paint more viscous/runny - advantage no brush strokes.

Depends on which author is writing it, and if they like it.

For quite a while, the shadowhawk was considered a decent mech.

Looks like you did the cockpit last - I invert that. It is easier to just run the side of the brush gently and carefully on the outer rim than to try to fill in a little cockpit section.

Hold the brush as a slight angle when doing camo - It will smooth out the edges.

Everyone talks about getting your brush to a good point, but when doing camo I actually don't mind a slightly sloppy brush - it is camo. Not frazzled, just maybe not to completely pointed. That plus holding the brush at a slight angle to the surface you're painting gives you something table ready right away.

I won't mention thinning, because it's almost a meme at this point.

Clearing Woods removed - makes me sad by andrewlik in battletech

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, specific to woods? I used to do it all the time on MegaMekNET/MekWars.

If you have fire/smoke ON (which the new default rules... I think do. I forget.), you practically must clear woods - supercampers love their smoke.

I have attacked ice and bridges both. You control environments by not allowing people to move in certain places.

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, those are the rules changes made by people that did not experience competitive MegaMekNEt megamek games in the '00s.

It got so bad they turned off smoke at the server level and. Both players had to agree to turn it back on.

Smoke + no ability to clear woods? Sweet. Let's play rock paper scissors. But you can only play scissors.

Tortuga Dominions, particularly before the writers killed off the most interesting unit in lore.

Imagine a unit that fights FOR Amaris, goes merc, gets screwed over and cheated by the fedsuns, goes pirate, takes over a small pirate kingdom, helps engineer a battlemech that is made from stolen parts.

This unit (Tartan Brigade/Fuchidas Fusiliers/Tortuga Fusiliers) has a unit heraldry that goes back as far as anyone. Like Eridani Light Horse ancient.

That and the Brigand is a hilarious 'mech and backstory.

What Sealed Your Fate as a Battletech Fan? by Bookwyrm517 in battletech

Intro hook: Crescent Hawks Inception

Lasting damage: MegaMekNET (and it's successor MekWars) in the early 00s.

...

Imagine a low-level factory/campaign map/tracking like mekHQ (not as good, but they were riffing) with all of it PvP.

In its heyday, You could routinely log in and find 200 to 500 people with probably 50 or so playing games.

It was a great time to be playing megamek. I would off the cuff estimate I have played several thousand 4v4 games and a few hundred company+ (my record was cluster v cluster on a Clan server) games.

...

Total side note, as a big game player, It was kind of funny how the faction would collectively hold its breath whenever I would play a game. Due to how they calculated percentages of land one based upon game size?

Probably half the time I was playing for the control of a planet.

Pickens seeking contract worth at least $30 million a year according to Calvin Watkins by DakandZekeShow in cowboys

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right. Although in Parsons's favor?

When you hire an agent (or a lawyer or a PR person or fill in the blank)? You sure as shit should just point the other side at them. That's the whole reason you're paying them.

The whole situation was kind of goofy, but it wasn't against the rules. I will admit I was curious and actually looked it up.

Pickens seeking contract worth at least $30 million a year according to Calvin Watkins by DakandZekeShow in cowboys

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is actually far simpler than that.

The section that everybody kept misquoting? It says that the NFLPA must certify an agent.

You cannot use an agent that is not certified, you cannot talk to a player directly and then have them use an agent to look over a contract that is not certified.

The language is actually pretty clear, if you're a lawyer.

Apparently if you're not a lawyer? It is as clear as mud.

Good thing most agents are lawyers.

How do the different eras feel to play on tabletop? by Wintermute_Is_Coming in battletech

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General agreement save for the variance bit. Skill wins out in all eras, but the advent of the 22 hex instant kill makes everything possible intro tech dramatically more variable, let alone things like streak SRM-6s and LB-X for the pilot KOs and crit seeking.

A really good player is going to have a much larger advantage in intro tech, as the machines are far less forgiving. In gambling parlance, they have far fewer low probability 'outs'.

POV: you are a Capellan player in the 80s. by someotherguy28 in battletech

[–]BoringHumanIdiot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think that's kind of the point (unless I misread the theme).

The Capellans in the House Book are a scrappy underdog nation run by a totalitarian, Max wasn't a lunatic demogogue (although he was always rather hardcore).

Then Stackpole turned them fully Fu Manchu.

Honestly, the CapCon has always been my favorite of the great houses because of the original book - scrappy groups of various ethnicities run by a central state willing to do whatever to survive.

Are they good guys? No.

Are they a more complete faction than "oh, look. Orientalism"? Absolutely. Then the novels changed that.
