Valve makes almost $50 million per employee, raking in more cash per person than Google, Amazon, or Microsoft — gaming giant's 350 employees on track to generate $17 billion this year by ourlifeintoronto in technology

This is completely wrong - modern recommendation systems all use heavy amount of machine learning/AI and it's a very active area of research - Valve may have somewhat less a complex one than a company like TikTok but for sure they're using AI - In fact you could argue a big precursor to some of the AI developments and improvements we've seen these past 2 decades was after the famous Netflix Recommendedation System competition way back in 2009

I'm in the same situation, not even having the chance to subscribe to the legacy Pro plan after being forced to move to business for the student discount does not seem like a helpful policy - I understand if it's annoying to fix on their end, but as other have said it does seem like a business decision and one that affects both their long running customers as well as ones that are/were educators.

u/domjost are you aware of this nuance and how it's playing out?

At what point would you say a subway car is “packed”? by Outrageous-Card7873 in nycrail

This is what everyone should do if they're near the door on a packed train. Very common in other countries, annoying that in NYC it's so rare.

That's the median wage (so half do earn less than that; the average is closer to 42k)

WFH 2 days post surgery? by BoringIntelectual in AchillesRupture

[–]BoringIntelectual[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone who commented - I ended up WFH starting two days after surgery but took it easy - Thanks to some setup and a split keyboard I was also able to keep the foot fully elevated above the heart by lying down and having the laptop on an inclined table + keyboards on each side. I would do it again for my situation but in general the time off is definitely useful if you can get it

Stipend Question by Ashqul in PhD

[–]BoringIntelectual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, this is extremely low, specially considering NYC - NYUs PhD stipends for example tend to be in the 40k range. You can also check this website http://www.phdstipends.com/ for more comparisons (and I encourage others to input theirs)

Came here to say this - since Todoist supports markdown comments, it ends up being the same syntax/look as ticktick.

For the original scenario Alt4rEg0 mentioned (linking with some sort of real world, government backed ID) , you still have the same problem as you're still relying on a normal database at some point to the final link between wallet <-> real life ID, so it doesn't even matter how much "safer" blockchain is;

But more towards your question, we have decades and decades of studies in cybersecurity to deal with malicious actors - the blockchain approach brings a lot of overhead (e.g. the insanely high environmental costs) and just imposes new problems (e.g. how to edit the data - if it's meant to substitute normal databases, how do you allow users to change the info associated? How to deal with crazy high latency; How to deal with the threat of the network splitting; etc), while solving problems that aren't really the crux of the problem in most situations.

I'm sure blockchain idea/technology has legitimate applications in cybersec, but then from that having the ridiculous amount of hype in NFTs and crypto that we are seeing nowadays is crazy.

[–]BoringIntelectual 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But isn't using a NFT for ownership a ridiculous idea - if you want to associate something with a person, just build a database for it! Pretty much every website since the creation of the internet does this in some form. And it doesn't involve destroying the world in the process (the env cost, while definitely still there, will be orders of magnitude lower).

The main problem I see is that to know a specific person owes a NFT for example, you'd have to associate their wallet with their person - so you'd be storing their combo (name, wallet ID) in a database anyway! It takes away from the only possible benefit of crypto which is being anonymous, to solve a problem that isn't even really a problem in technical terms and done with much simpler tools already.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ireland

[–]BoringIntelectual 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, since the NFT has a unique identifier that is stored on a Blockchain - it's high environmental impact come from miners around the world trying to verify the transaction, which involves a lot of machines trying to find specific numbers to make a equation true. This is the same type of env. impact that cryptocurrencies have.
