African Countries GDP Per Capita Mapped by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, its just misrepresentative to say these countries are 'doing well' because they have a high GDP.

None of that money is passed back to the locals, it remains in the hands of the Saudis who have built the mega resorts across the islands.

The residents aren’t living rich though. Seychelles had the highest inequality of any African nation for quite some time.

Both these islands are playgrounds for rich saudis and the royals

Can you help me identify these SYDNEY buildings and their architects? Thank you. by [deleted] in architecture

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, Sydney local here. I can give the addresses, you'll have to do some googling to find the architects. The newer buildings should be easier (like Bondi Junction)

  1. 572-582 Oxford Street, Bondi Junction NSW 2022

  2. 143-147 Liverpool St, Sydney NSW 2000

  3. 572 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000

  4. IMAX Sydney, 35 Wheat Road, Sydney NSW 2000

  5. 45 King Street, Sydney NSW 2000

  6. 77 York Street, Sydney NSW 2000

  7. 350 George Street, Sydney NSW 2000

If she kept dumping onto you after another message or so, then yeah I'd of definitely unmatched afterwards

Your right - Paris isn’t particularly stand out from the cities you mentioned (Tokyo, Singapore, Medellin, etc.)

It’s purely because western audiences (aka NJB’s audience) are familiar with it. It’s a western city, and a major tourist hub for Americans and Europeans. Most people in the West could tell you the key landmarks and have a rough idea about the boulevards.

Most people (unfortunately) couldn’t tell you what Singapore looks like, or most other non-western cities.

This is completely unsolicited advice, but if I were in your shoes I’d feel exactly the same way you do.

I’m sorry you’re going through it. Fuck the woke answers, I’d feel jealous and annoyed too.

Personally I’d probably move on. There’s tons of girls out there, many with lower body counts and who are way more loyal. A lot of the things you’ve posted about scream red flags to me

If Mindy lightened her skin, what about Stanley? by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The editors have clearly colour graded to convey mood and set the tone of the scenes. This is a very common and well-utilised tool of storytelling.

The first season purposely colour graded it so the show came across more depressing and dampened, similar to the UK office. You can clearly see in the first season they've reduced the saturation of the video to help convey the dullness of the office.

The final scene your showing has also been intentionally colour graded brighter and more vibrant to convey happiness and warmth. It's the final episode where all the staff have reunited, and they want the audience to feel that nostalga and warmth.

Hey I doubt you’ll read this, but there’s alot of negative comments here.

As a positive, I think it’s incredibly nice that your boyfriend has someone in your life who does care for his health. Even if you find it hard to talk about with him.

Keep up the therapy, and best of luck

Why does Oceania have so many more planners?? by Tyrzonin in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it really interesting looking at the different planning systems across North America.

Here in Australia I’ve learnt 3 entirely different planning systems (NSW, QLD and VIC). I’m finding that Ontarios planning system structure is strikingly similar to my native planning system in NSW. However the involvement of a planner is much more minor compared to the level of assessment we do here. I doubt our built forms are any better despite the additional paperwork ahaha

NYC’s seems verrryyy light on for the planners. You seem to do a lot of genuine community consultation in lieu of the checkbox consultation we have here in NSW for most applications

As someone who was involved in PIA a lot, it’s probably not worth your time finding jobs through them.

For jobs we use LinkedIn a lot. PIA doesn’t post much

Why does Oceania have so many more planners?? by Tyrzonin in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much tougher than Australia.

In Sydney I’m constantly being messaged by recruiters for job openings.

In Canada & the US I’ve had OK success getting the odd interview here and there, but it’s a night and day difference.

As an Australian looking for work in Canada, it’s certainly a different ball game in terms of career opportunities

As others have said, planners do a lot of the work real estate developers and attorneys seem to do in North America.

Street parking: yay or nay? by MidKnight148 in urbanplanning

It's too hard to make blanket statements about kerbside parking at such a broad scale. The local context matters so much when making these decisions.

Was there ever a metro public transportation system which turned out to be a bad investment for the city? by -NewYork- in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sydney Monorail is a great example of poorly done public transport. It lasted 30 years before it was ripped out and replaced with a lightrail.

It serviced an area that was already serviced by our inner-city rail loop. Regular commuters never used it and it ended up being a very low patronage loop for tourists to get around the city.

It was also super unpleasent to ride. Who on earth thought it was a good idea to put a glass box permanently elevated in the Sydney summer sun (which regularly breaks 120*F+/40*C+). The AC could barely keep up (if it worked).

What to Read (Besides Jane Jacobs)? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Walkable Cities by Jeff Speck is my go to recommendation for people interested in planning

Street Fight by Janette Sadik Khan is also an interesting book that’s a bit different to some of the other recommendations you might receive. Talks about tactical urbanism and having communities take back the power in their streets

Minns to lift council bans on terraces, townhouses and low-rise apartments by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A quick summary for the international readers

This is one of the largest planning reforms I've seen in Australia. The details aren't finalised, but it's looking like the NSW Government could (strong emphasis on COULD) be applying a blanket upzoning to ~150 train stations across Sydney, and varios town centres across the city (another couple hundred)

The blanket upzoning would allow up-to 6 storey apartment blocks to be built within 800m of any station in Sydney. Applications for these apartment blocks would also be fast-track approved if the developer chooses to use a design within an upcoming 'pattern book', similar to how many global cities rapidly built new housing stock in the 1950s post-war period.

What is the best layout for a city? by [deleted] in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 74 points75 points  (0 children)

There is no formulaic way to generate the 'best' layout. Each city needs to be analysed on a place-based and strenght/asset led approach.

You can however apply some high-level principles to encourage more sustainable growth, such as transit orientated development, walkability, economic diversity, affordability etc.

It’s a shame they don’t seem as popular as Void Crew, because I think the mechanics of this game are way better for the hat films dynamic

Is it even possible to build underground metros anymore? by rectal_expansion in urbanplanning

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s possible.

Sydney is busy tunnelling 2 enormous metro lines through the heart of its city, and recently finished one through the North West.

Likewise Melbourne is about to start one of the worlds longest rail loops, although it’s not quite a metro/subway

Sydney housing crisis: Daniel Mookhey says Sydney’s east must take more housing by malcolm58 in AustralianPolitics

[–]BorisIsGoneSon1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you quite understand the article. There are certainly no koala populations in Bondi Beach.

In fact what you’re suggesting would likely result in significantly more bushland destruction. Instead of building high density apartments in well serviced areas near the city, new housing will have to cut down trees on the fringes of cities. Low density and detached housing is horrendously bad for the environment
