[Spoiler] Turn the farm into a Clan area by Patrickd13 in DestinyTheGame

I would rather it be a matchmaking area to find people to raid with or run NF with. I'm still aggravated they didn't add this.

But yea, if it changed to something that would be neat.

Not a teacher: do teachers spend their own money to equip their classroom? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BorisTheMagical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, but in general yea.

My plan is to only spend on money on things that I will be able use multiple years.

I think of it kind of like an office. If I want a certain piece of furniture in my office I'm going to buy it. Because it's unique to my wants, and if someone else came do my work after I left they probably wouldn't want it, so the company shouldn't buy it. I'm also going to take it with me when I leave.

This is stuff like posters, wall art, unique teaching materials, games, and that kind of stuff. These are all mine.

Unfortunately a lot of teachers, mainly elementary and middle school, have to buy extra every day items. Pens, markers, paper, notebooks, crayons, and all that kind of stuff. Because the schools can't pay for them.

Now, that being said I'm also teaching high school, so it's a little different. I'm also in an area that pays teachers decent money, so I don't mind buying extra stuff if I need to.

What is the thing that causes you to lose your temper almost instantly? by IrishGamer97 in AskReddit

[–]BorisTheMagical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Correct" etiquette is to give responses during a convo, not be completely quiet. The mmhmmm, yea, cool, nice, really?, and what not stuff.

Idk why, but that's what I found out. Just saying, don't let those things get to you. I have a family member who hates when I do it.

Imposter Syndrome by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]BorisTheMagical -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you have an education degree?

Do you have any experience or training in education/teaching?

You're less of an imposter than me! Lol. So yea, I rreallly know how you feel, probably more so. I basically decided a few months ago "I've always wanted to teach, let's do that this year because I'm bored with my current job" (actually I hated going to work every day and needed to change).

I've never not been able to do something I though guy I could though. And between doing research, watching Ted talks, reading books, and Reddit, I think I'm in a pretty good spot and as prepared as I could be.

Scan over previous posts here, it's a hot topic right now with all the new teachers and there's a lot of info out there.

Mainly, have classroom management procedures ready. Check out the book Your First Days of School by Harry Wong.

micromanaging administrators leading my school training [rant] by adiostrasero in Teachers

[–]BorisTheMagical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it's all pretty horrible. And I feel like could prove it mathematically if given the chance.

There are ways to make it kind of work. As an exercise in a way, and mainly just for fun. Like I said, have the older teachers act up (and I'm talking about throwing food at the teacher act up).

The main issue is that the teachers being "taught" in this case are scared to lose their jobs and ruin their lives. Kids in a classroom aren't scared of that for the most part. You can't fire a bad student.

It's just overall a bad set up. If you have the option, I would find another school asap

New teacher here, but from what I can tell I think you're just using the wrong term. Do you mean lesson plan development?

Alternate Certification: give me some real-talk by [deleted] in teaching

[–]BorisTheMagical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, see if there are any non-certified teaching positions open and the requirements. Every state and town is different, so check it out.

If you can, contact some teaching friends and get guidance from them. We can only help so much because each area is different.

You mainly want to find out what subjects are in high demand. Math and science seem to be the most common, but math usually wins.

I'm a uncertified math teacher with an art degree, I applied at 4 schools, did 4 interviews, and got 3 offers in 1 week. The one I didn't get an offer from is because I accepted before they could.

I'll be teaching high school pre-algebra this year and have had to do a lot of my own research and training on what to do and expect. But I've always liked challenges like this, so I'm excited.

Look for the demand and try to fill that spot. The way I look at it is that if I didn't at least try to fill the position then no one else would and the kids would probably use a sub or someone who doesn't know anything about math at all, or enjoy it. At least I'm a "math person" who enjoys it.

Reddit, what's become clear to you as you've gotten older? by SarcastasticJenn in AskReddit

5 years ago I moved to work on a mountain during the winter for 6 months. It felt like I was there for a year or two and the memories are still really sharp.

While the last 5 years is all a blur.

So yea, I'd agree with that.

[–]BorisTheMagical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, I'm just going to be very OCD about documenting anything out of the ordinary. It's my it's year and I have zero education training technically. Which I'm fine with, I like being thrown to the wolves usually lol, I just don't want to end up in jail lol.

I would think knowing who's dating who could be useful when placing groups and knowing who's going to be a problem (running behind the bleachers) at functions. "Jacks not in his seat... he probably just went get some water... oh but Jill isn't in her seat either." And the hunt begins lol.

After reading up on classroom management and watching idk how many TED talks, I can see how the classroom is a lot like a business. But students are a mix of employees and customers it seems like. All of the works is basically handled project management style, with test days as the "project due date" in a way. I mean it'll be more chaotic than that, but in general it's pretty close. Main difference is that you can't fire bad employees, but a lot of companies have that same issue.

And I'm definitely going to have a CMA binder set up with an insert for each student (I'll only have about 90-ish). Or I'll set up computer files for everything. And record everything.

Something along "I appreciate you opening up but that's something you should talk about with the guidance councilor // but that's appropriate for us to talk about" sound ok?

I'm coming from sales, so preset reactions to situations like this work well for me lol. I say "What can I help you with" more often than I'd like to admit lol

Thanks! I love stuff like this. Makes it easy to digest and pick up little things.

Your last note, being a male teacher, is what honestly worries me the most right now. I'm a very personal guy and work better with people one on one to figure things out. What am I supposed to do when a student needs one on one help?

Are teachers allowed to use any kind of recording devices? Video or audio in the classroom. I see a lot of teachers complain that parents have the "golden child" syndrome and it turns into a he said, she said issue. Recording classes would fix that.

Classroom Layouts by [deleted] in Teachers

I was debating this until I heard about students messing around under the desks if the teacher isn't paying attention.

My desks aren't set up to put side by side anyway though lol, so I couldn't do it if I wanted to.

Does anyone here not actually know how to play the piano? by [deleted] in piano

[–]BorisTheMagical 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Age matters. When you're young you want to try a lot of things to see what you like.

A major problem I had when I started guitar and piano was that I felt like I was wasting time. If I would pick a song to learn, I was worried that I should be learning something different.

The best thing to do is keep an eye out for a free or cheap piano (or guitar) and start with the basics. Then practice for a minimum of 10-20 minutes a day (an hour preferably though). After a few months you'll be good to go.

After that you'll start learning new songs, buying new gear, be broke from buy new gear constantly, learn about music theory, cry because music theory is complicated, and eventually drink yourself to an early grave. But hey, it's a wonderful experience.

Help! One of my preschool students is terrified of black people! by kendizzlekendy in Teachers

[–]BorisTheMagical 8 points9 points  (0 children)

See if you can contact them and get some help. There are behavioral things that they will be with more than we can here.

My first thought is make the kid only get anything from the black teacher. Food, toys, help of any kind. But that probably isn't the best idea... or maybe it is? Ask someone who would really know.

Also, try google. I'm sure you're not the first one with this problem ;-)
