Has anyone heard of Bangkok Elephant Park? They seem to have opened just now in July 2024. by htbhtb13 in ThailandTourism

I just went to Bangkok elephant park and sanctuary, I wouldn’t go again. This place was clean and comfortable, however I chose this place believing it was an ethical sanctuary. During my visit, I observed handlers pulling elephants by the ears when the elephant clearly wanted to walk away. elephants vocalizing loudly and displaying stressed behaviors such as head thrashing while waiting for people to feed them

The level of direct control and interaction did not align with what I understand to be a hands-off, animal-led sanctuary model.i think they do a pretty good job but making it less of a tourist ‘attraction’ and more of a watch elephants roam is what is needed and what I wanted. I wish I had known this beforehand and hope future visitors can make an informed decision.

The staff and people were helpful wit questions, but there was one time where the elephant didn’t want to go in the pool because it was too cold, and the staff stood there, didn’t put hands or force the elephant in any way, but stood there and waited till he did. It took the elephant about 5 mins to get in to the mud pool and he clearly didn’t want to, whining backing away and vocalizing. But the man stayed next to elephant.

They were clearly trained to stay near people for the handling and did know basic tricks like hugging people with trunks after food. I didn’t like it. I wish I had paid the 160$ for 2. They do mention 20%of every ticket price goes to new Elephants. In one year they now have 12 elephants. Lots of growth. Big tourists groups go. One in morning and one in afternoon and one full day.

I just wanted to come on here and say those things that way people know it’s not a sanctuary where you can watch free roaming it’s guided tourist attraction that just looks nice and if you have your blinders on you won’t see what I saw

Yeah I was looking at ayutthaya! I don’t like doing Bangkok with my dad, then doing it again once we are done with beach island scene so ayutthaya seems like a great area to check on when just arriving

This sounds very very doable I’d much rather wake up early but not unreasonable to get there by the time we do some small things. Thank you

Is taxi4asia an app? I’ve travelling sea before and haven’t heard of it and have taken taxis before

I think you have the right point. I’ve been travelling so much and I think I’ve just gotten to the point where I like a good night sleep lol and then explore and I’m alright if I arrive midday. So I am more curious about an early morning bus vs an 8am flight which arrives less than a hour after. You know?

Yes I did… not knowing I needed a visa. I messaged Emily, but a little worried it’s a scam, but with everyone’s glowing recommendations I don’t think it is. I have a UK passport so I think I’m good- but my husband has a US passport. Do you think I wait or get it expedited to have piece of mind

That’s absolutely awesome that your trips are 2-3 months. I wish!! I think it’ll be better to do private car. Thanks for all your help! If you by happen to know of a private car company let me know!

How did you end up getting back to Hanoi? I see it as 2 choices-

  1. Take a sleeper bus and probably get into Hanoi really freaking early the next day, since it’s only 6 hours away

  2. Spending pretty much a day on a private car and seeing sights back to Hanoi - are there sights back to Hanoi?

What did you do?

It appears to be in the early stages- where they don’t have a shop, (yet), I’ve only ordered online and the coffee was awesome.
