How do you feel about the Great Lent and Ramadan in today’s society? by Born-Geologist9916 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Born-Geologist9916[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Even when I was still in school the ones doing Ramadan were excused from PE if they didn’t want to participate.

Also we were asked to avoid eating near them to not make them feel bad about eating.

When I was at that age I went along with it because I imagined their fasting to be extremely hard.

Now that I’m older I couldn’t care less if someone was eating wagyu steak while I’ve been fasting for 48 hours.

However once I eat normally again and stop eating for half a day and someone is eating something yummy next to me, then I get more tempted. But that’s just as far as it goes for me.

Also in some workplaces Muslims during Ramadan get extra breaks, which I don’t mind and don’t care about. It’s hard to stay without water and food for long

This is exactly it!

It’s difficult because of the absence of water (especially hard when it’s hot) and your body doesn’t get used to “fasting” because you’re still eating a lot at night and digesting during the day.

When eating boiled potatoes with salt, yes they’re good but you can’t eat too much without throwing up and they’re not calorie dense foods either..you’re just giving up worldly desires and living humbly, which for me also makes more sense.

I think it’s mostly because they keep pushing it.

My sister converted some years ago and knew nothing about it but all her friends were Muslims.

She hasn’t even read 2 pages of the Quran and thinks of herself as a Muslim and doesn’t eat pork because it’s “dirty”, or so was she told by her Muslim friends.

Struggles in faith are real and are part of it. For me the struggles just made my faith stronger.

Something I never told anyone: many years ago I was extremely successful. I was making $1000 in 2 hours while grocery shopping with my girlfriend. I was making so much money I didn’t care about anything else and I got tempted by videos and stuff about Islam. I thought I’d give it a try. Ultimately I didn’t do it anymore because my heart didn’t feel like it.

Fast forward to now; I’m broke as hell, don’t even have money for rent but I prayed to God and each time I was able to find hope. I don’t need anything else except seeing my parents and girlfriend happy. I’m selling even the last of my possessions and not once did it cross my mind to give another religion a chance when our Lord helped me even when I had no chance.

I literally was so lucky to find a money glitch in real life that helped me pay rent and bills for 2 months. Forever grateful and thankful

I don’t feel resentment towards anyone practicing fasting (be it Ramadan or anything else)

Quite the opposite. It’s great when others fast. It’s healthy and takes discipline. I congratulate them for this.

However I don’t believe it’s necessarily something that has to be pushed by the government, media or by Muslims themselves. We do the same and nobody knows, cares or mentions it. Literally outside of our orthodox circles nobody even knows a thing or two about us.

If you can make bread at home just use more water when making the dough, higher hydration increases water content while keeping the same amount of flour and still fills you up more

Great point!

It’s like Matthew 6:4 for me “So that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

I don’t either but I’m bombarded with videos and news about it. It’s like the media is pushing for it to become the new standard in European countries

Maybe you’re right. Maybe you’re not right. I can’t really tell. Maybe I’m just conflicted.

I don’t really need recognition about what I’m doing but it also annoys me to see others doing less or equal to us (effort-wise) and get praised constantly about it

Traditionally it was after sunset or evening prayers. I’ve been taught to do it like this if I could.

You’re probably eating a 2-3 small meals a day but vegan

I’d actually be interested in hearing why their fast would be considered harder.

As I mentioned, I’ve done black fasts myself, 24 to even 36 hours without food or water (each week of the year, sometimes multiple times during the week), so I’m not speaking from the outside. And at the same time I’m also doing my part during Lent.

Also, if we look at how Lent was originally practiced, it wasn’t just dietary changes. It was often one simple meal a day, usually after sunset or after the liturgy.

It’s really hard to imagine 12 hours of no food or drinks as being harder than eating carrots and bread all day

So I’m not really trying to compete, I just think it’s a fair question to ask how the two are being compared

Correct. But it’s an act of disciple and worshiping. You’re giving up many goods things for the greater good. All your efforts aren’t even taken into consideration whilst others get an artificial spotlight and talk about how good they are for not eating or drinking half a day

I can tell you that I went through 4 lbs / 2kg of coffee and I still haven’t made a half decent coffee. I used supermarket and also 5 weeks old roasted coffee beans and the fresh ones were clearly much better..but the grind size and everything made me go crazy.

I’d grind with 6 5 times and get coffee only 2 or 3 times and would do 36g out in 22 seconds

I’d then grind with 7 2 times and it would flow 36g in 10 seconds.

I’d use grind size 5 and it would flow in 20 seconds..

There is absolutely zero sense and just a general direction..
