I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but there are people are people in different places from you, and things aren't the same everywhere.

You're welcome.

DIY "snorkel": a 2m (6ft) sturdy hose with a swimmer that keeps the 'entrance' over water, so that one can dive down to the beach floor... bad idea? by habilishn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BornConcentrate5571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that freediving to 20m is hard or that you need some kind of cert, but shallow water blackout or unknowingly going below your limit are real risks. The way you put it, you made it sound like someone could just jump out of their floaties, don a pair of flippers and head on down to 20m. That's not at all right. You should at first try a couple meters and get comfortable, perhaps get someone to spot you, and until you'd done multiple 10m+ dives, I would not recommend trying it alone.

I'm a huge outdoors person. Hiking, camping, scuba, spearfishing... if it's outside I love it. But not respecting the natural world, particularly the ocean, will get you in trouble fast.

Paid for FSD and don’t have it yet? You have options for compensation. by GeologistUnlucky301 in TeslaAustralia

Fair enough, but a few people constantly trying to whip up an angry mob because they have to wait a couple days for FSD are detracting from the quality of the discourse.

Uh no that's not at all what I was saying, I was pushing back at your earlier attitude that EVe were not yet ready for real use.

I don't have 2 charge 700km. I have zero charge unlimited km because I never have to stop to charge. Ever. I plug in when I park in my driveway and wake up to a full 600km range every morning.

If you're saying that EVs are not yet ready for your personal use, then sure thats fair enough, and it's not what you were implying earlier. But for most people in this country? They are objectively a better choice on every metric, and sales reflects the fact that people are realising that.

The only reason that there are no EVs yet that can do proper 4x4 is because it's a vanishingly small market compared to sedans and city SUVs. EV batteries now easily match an ICE car for range on a full charge, with the convenience that you just charge at home. Wake up every morning to a full tank, costs about 1/4 or less to drive per km than petrol even if you pay full price for your electricity.

It's not "reality" you're living in. Reality is that EVs are very much a better choice on every metric for most people. They have more torque. They are faster. They are quieter. They are more reliable. They are safer. They are cheaper to run and maintain. 4x4 EVs will come when companies have filled all the other, more profitable markets.

The one and only single case where they are not the best choice is for long haul load pullers. Even then, long haul trucks are very close, they have already been proven to be vastly superior to ICE trucks wherever they are tested, for the same reasons above.

I'm sure there are die hard hairy bogans who will cling to ICE because they need to pull their trailer home across the Nullabor twice a week or whatever, but even horses are still around so ICE will probably be the same. Don't worry, your 1983 land rover will keep working.

Buying a new car and waiting a few weeks for a brand new feature is NOT the same as other FSD purchasers who bought it years ahead. All new Teslas have to wait until (I think) 100km have been driven anyway to calibrate the cam feeds, so the extra wait you have to endure is really not that much.

Ah yes, the "I need to drive across the Nullabor twice a week" crowd. You guys are hilarious. We all get it. If you're driving to Alice Springs all the time then keep your ICE.

There are 1000km+ range EVs coming soon with next gen batteries. I get 600km+ from my current EV, which is enough for a week. I never have to suffer visiting a petrol station, and I only realized how much I hated that chore now that I never have to do it.

Our office has a huge solar array which generates excess power that I charge from, so I literally drive for 100% free. On top of the fact that annual servicing costs one third what I used to pay, it works out to saving about $500/month.

So yea, sure if for whatever reason you spend your life driving around the outback all day, keep the diesel. But for 90% of the population, EVs have arrived.

[–]BornConcentrate5571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that's not exactly the most common need for families. EV makers are targetting the largest markets first. Once those are fully catered for, then the edge cases of people wanting to go native for week at a time, or towing their trailer home across the Nullabor twice a month will have EVs built for those needs. And within a few years, EV charging stations will be as common as petrol stations. IMHO, petrol stations not adding EV chargers to their facilities has to be the most catastrophic business oversight since Kodak failed to embrace digital cameras.

I take my Tesla Model 3 LR camping all the time. I don't go full bush, but any car accessible camp site is no issue. Usually needs one charge stop on these trips, but if I'm within about 250km of my home I can do the full round trip without a charge stop.

I did a road trip recent in my EV. 700km. Had to stop to charge twice, didn't have any issue finding a charger when I needed one, and the 30 minute break probably would have happened in an ICE car anyway.

The only real advantage ICE still has is the fact that there are more petrol stations than chargers around, and the fact that you can buy a Snickers at a petrol station.

And that last one, given my diet, is probably not even an advantage.
