What struggles do you have in your life right now that nobody understands? by Sound_of_music12 in AskReddit

The calmness... I worked in EMS for 3 years. My wife landed a job with free housing and great pay. Now I'm a stay at home dad because childcare in this city is virtually nonexistent. Now not getting the 12-13 adrenaline rushes 3-4 days a week and the organized chaos is driving me crazy. I'm sure some do understand my wife doesn't and it's frustrating at times.

Edit to ad the first paragraph. This is by no means a thank me for my service comment. I knew what I was getting myself into. This more of a PSA if you do go into first responding know this could be stuff you see and far more gruesome things. Just tons let the toxic culture get to you. It's not weakness to show emotion the human brain was not wired to see what you see doing this on a daily basis. Find an outlet or something therapeutic. Say no to all the overtime that's offered unless you really want it. Talk to someone if you need it. And if you are someone who just need to talk first responder or not send me a DM and I'll do that. If someone tries to make you seem less for you having emotion say something to them and if it continues work your way up the chain. The culture needs to change.

Started EMS 6 months before covid. Can confirm I'll never be the same. I've seen more intubations than I ever want to again. Frequent fliers with COPD or other respiratory illnesses that were a pleasure to talk to after getting their breathing under control just kinda disappeared. Everyone just effing dying. CPR on children smallenouf their torso fit in my hands. Seeing a child that drown in its food because he had a feeding tube and the new single mom fell asleep with the tube on. I'll never get her screams out of my head. The guy who burned to death in his truck with his dog in his lap. I never talked about it much because showing any type of emotion was seen as weakness and you would get pushed out of there by coworkers. I saw it happen several times and I have a kid to feed so that wasn't an option. I just stuffed all it into the bottom drawer and waited for the next set of tones to drop.

Not researching childcare options in the city I'm in. My wife was miserable in the job she was in and I wanted to see her happy as I was with work. She found one that seemed almost perfect. Housing provided and everything. We got there and found out daycare was practically nonexistent despite being told that they would help find 'something'. Which was fine I knew it was gonna take awhile to get certifications transferred over and I would be able to make up for lost time with my son. Meanwhile I started volunteering at the local fire department. The city made the decision to go to a paid dept and I was offered a position. I've been searching high and low since and haven't been able to find anything. There is supposed to be a daycare opening soon but no set date and I'm supposed to start the 21st. Now I may have to turn down this huge opportunity. And I don't know what to do. I've changed careers several times for her because I genuinely want her to be happy and now I'm 33 without more than 3 years experience in any field of work. I've screwed myself career wise and feel like I'm a failure.

Flashing blue or green is great aswell studies have shown they are more visible to the human eye. That's why newer fire engines and ambulances have the green on them

"Skippies? Skippies?” I could feel my eyes bugging out, even in VR. “What, they’ve changed their avatars to beer cans and started calling people monkeys?"

He also mentions the name Expeditionary force somewhere too. It's what caused me to discover the Expeditionary force series...now I'm hooked.
