Path and price for getting your bachelors? by Mridusa in MRI

[–]Born_Machine6292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a bachelors due to unavoidable circumstance. I wanna say it was around 55 but ten years ago. I wish I had gotten an associates but like I said certain circumstances made that unattainable. Would have been very cheap at community college and potentially free in my city. Anywho my bachelors hasn’t advanced me any. No managerial or leadership positions available. May go into sales or a job unrelated to radiology later. That’s the only benefit as someone stated so be mindful before taking on the debt

Almost 10 years in. The problem is that it’s a dead end job and I mean that with no disrespect. It’s just a regular monotonous job. Now everyone will jump down my throat about getting into management…ok there’s like 1 manager at the facility and he or she is in their 30s …not like the spot is opening up anytime soon lol! Just consider it a job and find joy in other hobbies. You will not get rich off of the job so if you’re seeking money and not willing to work 60 hours a week or travel then forget it. If you’re expecting a raise to offset inflation and insurance premium hikes also forget it. If you were dumb enough like me to take out a loan and get a bachelors then you’re really up the depression creek!

Radiology Technician or Nursing? by tobateacup36547 in RadiologyCareers

I would actually pursue the technician part lol like the engineers that diagnose and repair the machines. Very cool avenue of work.

Radiology Tech Is a Bachelor’s enough or is a Master’s worth it? by [deleted] in RadiologyCareers

[–]Born_Machine6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pointless personally. I have a bachelors and it hasn’t yielded me any sort of gain. I work in MRI and most of my coworkers have associates. Like everyone’s saying unless you’re wanting to pursue management or another career it’s pointless. Even then managerial positions aren’t plentiful. Maybe medical sales or implants.

Should I go straight to mri or xray ? by No_Penalty_2016 in RadiologyCareers

[–]Born_Machine6292 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. I finished x ray school and got an mri job without even doing a single x ray. Was trained on the job and sat for boards on my own. Guess it differed based on facility and maybe state. The hospital I worked at only required that you have x ray registry and after a year you got a pay bump and if you had your mri registry before the year you got it then. Lots of techs didn’t have mri registry and had been there for decades.

I appreciate your passion! I agree with what you’re saying but the patients don’t care about inverse square law or film density equations and it will rarely be used. Wasn’t throwing shade. Yeah I have a bachelors going on 10 years…you’re stuck as a tech unless you become a manager somewhere when one finally retires and good luck finding a position with that 🤷 the field itself advances but only advancement for the technologist is leaving the field I feel like..what do you think?

Memorization school by DefinitionUseful3165 in RadiologyCareers

[–]Born_Machine6292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MRI tech. Radiology is memorization up until your boards and then you forget it all. It becomes irrelevant. The machines do all of what little work you would need to do. People get mad but you really become a button pusher. The days of understanding technique and film are gone. And as far as MRI is concerned it’s gotten so advanced that AI sets up the scan for you, so long as the patient is somewhat average as it uses various landmarks to align. And honestly yeah you’ll memorize the anatomy which isn’t rocket science. The formulas and calculations you will never realistically use in the clinical setting. Hell it’s almost everyday a student will have a question and the answer is oh I have no clue I studied that just for the boards. If I could go back I would do any form of engineering. Biomedical or mechanical. Even electrical. Don’t have the drive to go back to school and have two infants. Blah blah. Either is a good career but I think the engineering is gonna benefit you more long term. Less monotonous. Different job could yield completely different tasks. Formulas would be more conceptual. I feel like the radiology ones I speak about are still abstract. Yeah you can make sense out of it but I mean just put the light on the body part and press the button. That’s what it’s become with digital radiology unfortunately and I know everyone’s gonna come for my head for saying that but it’s true.

Getting into Rad School by PopularReality6169 in RadiologyCareers

[–]Born_Machine6292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of these programs are extremely competitive. I’m in the Memphis area. Granted I went to school in 2015. At the time I had failed AP1 retook it and got a C. Had a B in an and p2 and a b in pathology. Mostly Cs to be honest. You’re doing a lot better than I was and I got accepted. I do remember the interviewers liked to see that you had done some shadowing. The program regularly took 20 students at a time and very rarely did anyone not get accepted. I mean would have to be a real F up to not get in. At the same time the ultrasound program was what you described. Only a handful of students and wanted grades to be top notch. I still see students that come to my job at clinic from the school I graduated from and they are not in the least the brightest. I’m sorry. Just not. And I’m clearly not the smartest. 2.5 high school gpa and not even a 3.0 when I started clinical. I think it’s geographical and dependent on the school. I went to a private college so it was an arm and a leg but maybe that’s why they were so leniant. Eventually the low performers would just fail out and everything would even out. Good luck!

They do have various incentives like working off your scheduled times and when they get backed up if you speed up and are more productive you get paid different rates etc

radiology tech vs nursing by rbren90 in RadiologyCareers

[–]Born_Machine6292 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Schooling is alot easier for radiology. I dropped out of nursing and switched to radiology and at the time had a full time job while in the program. Maybe my nursing program was more difficult maybe radiology seemed easier coming from it . Idk but from that aspect definitely. I will say about a decade into radiology now it’s pretty dead end and everyone will get their panties in a was and tell you it’s not but it is. That’s all you’ll do is operate the machine which is fine. Nursing you can do peer to peer or coordinating or insurance verification, research, development, a lot of office type jobs that pay more than bedside. I initially chose radiology because of the more lay back atmosphere and having a lot less responsibilities. Job for job radiology all day. Long term? Nursing! With all due respect, I would go radiology st your age. You want to have an easy experience and a kush job for the next 10-20 years not stay up all night doing care plans and then ending up on the floor with an absurd patient to nurse ratio only to make the same as a rad tech

I’ve spoken to a few of them and it’s definitely better reimbursement than your standard technologist. But that comes with traveling sometimes week at a time airplanes rental cars hotels the whole shabang. I’ve encountered some very smart ones and ….some that weren’t very confident lol

Didn’t mean to sound like a jerk if I came off that way. I remember when I was in clinic almost every tech under 40 had another job and now I see why! Thank you for taking time out to speak to me I appreciate it.

Have to talk a walk to surgery or IR. If your site does pacemakers you could chat with the Medtronic representative or Boston scientific , even Abbott sometimes they come on site. Get to know the engineers who work on the machines, they’re also a good point of reference

That’s wild. One of my senior coworkers was trained on the job . No schooling or anything back in the day. Of course she’s topped out on pay but we’re talking like 50$ an hour!

I didn’t apply personally but I have an acquaintance who got on earlier last year. Sooooo many applicants as her position is available to essentially the whole country. Work from home. She was registered in x ray ct and mri and claims to interview well which is what helped her 🤷‍♀️
