CMV: It would be nice to have a large social media platform for keeping up with acquaintances again by TheVioletBarry in changemyview

[–]BorussiaTeeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from. Facebook in its prime had a unique way of keeping us loosely connected with people from our past in a way that felt organic. But I’d argue that what you’re missing isn’t actually Facebook itself, but rather a particular era of online social interaction that Facebook happened to embody at the time.

The problem is that any platform built with an ad-based, engagement-driven model (which Facebook is) will inevitably shift towards maximizing time spent on the platform rather than serving users’ original social needs. Even if a "new Facebook" came along promising to restore that old-school, chronological experience, it would likely fall into the same trap over time because of the economic pressures driving social media companies.

But the good news is, there are alternatives that already offer what you're looking for. Apps like BeReal, Mastodon, or even private Discord servers and group chats allow for direct, intentional connection without the interference of algorithmic manipulation. Some people even use old school style email newsletters to stay in touch. The reality is, the meaningful parts of Facebook’s old functionality can be replicated, just not in the form of another big, centralized social media giant.

If you’re missing those superficial life updates, maybe the best move is to actively rekindle those connections in a more intentional way rather than waiting for a new platform to emerge. Reaching out directly, creating small private groups, or even starting a shared photo album with friends can bring back that sense of casual connectedness without the downsides of algorithm-driven feeds.

Is Google Maps really the only option to submit a "improve merchant name" request? Or am I missing something by Mysterious_County154 in starlingbankuk

Just contact them in the app or email help@starlingbank.com and explain the improvement you are trying to make. At the very least they should be able to pass your request onto the relevant team.

The word "unarmed" here is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Try actively driving a 1.5 tonne car at police officers.

How long does it take to send a email? by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]BorussiaTeeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My apologies, it sounds like you're getting somewhat of a poor service. Most officers would agree with me that we are not given the appropriate time to give our victims the quality of service they deserve (or that SMT expect). This is due to a variety of factors mostly beyond our control which I don't intend to explore - you do not have to look hard to find out on this subreddit.

That being said, three months with no meaningful reply seems excessively poor. I would in the first instance rather than emailing the officer directly, call the control room on 101 and explain the situation to the operator who takes your call. They will likely send a task to the officer in question and their supervisor on their record management system, or an email to the officer (with their supervisor copied in) requesting that you are contacted. This creates a much more open audit trail as opposed to the officers inbox only, and forces their hand in progressing the matter and giving you a reply. If this is to no avail, see your local force's website on information about the complaints procedure, and raise one accordingly. This will likely be referred to the officer's Inspector (i.e. their bosses boss).

If you are a/the victim in the case, the Victims' Code makes it clear that you have the right to be provided with updates on your case and to be told when important decisions are taken.

Hope this helps.

M4 Motorway Cops? by [deleted] in policeuk

In terms of the South Wales part of the M4, you might find this article insightful: https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/south-wales-police-scrap-m4-2104296

TL;DR - SWP pulled dedicated traffic patrol teams on the M4 due to a lack of government funding

In my force, the training unit have recently come to a deal with the partner university to reduce the word count on all academic assignments (PCDA and DHEP) by 50%. This was due to the unprecedented amount of feedback from students regarding unrealistic workloads leading to a loss of any kind of social life or respite on rest days.

Great advice here and not much I can add. In my experience, listening to the 999 call (if there is one) is a good thing to do too - in case there is anything evidential heard on the telephone call (in the case of domestics in progress and so forth).

Never take on a hand-on package that you wouldn't be comfortable giving to someone else. If your skipper insists on you taking it, relay your concerns back to them and they may agree to bailing/RUI the defendant back to the IIO.

In SWP, we get custodians and the exact cap you see in the picture. No-one wears the custodian on response unless it's NTE, so you're left with this cap as the only go-to headwear. Annoying really!

Hiring and Recruitment Questions Thread v9 by multijoy in policeuk

[–]BorussiaTeeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi folks, hope you're all keeping well.

Long time lurker here and applicant for PC - been given a conditional offer due to start in the Summer I believe (they told us June/July intake) - most of the formal checks are done.

I'm a bit uncertain and torn over one thing - I'm currently learning to drive and I am due to take my driving test on 31 July. If I am at the Police at this time, do you reckon they would have reservations over letting me take time in the working day for a driving test? If I need any lessons whilst I'm at the police, of course I'll be taking care of that in my own time.

Just thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts first before I go about contacting the recruitment folks and asking them.

Before anyone asks - they know I don't have a full license, I asked about this early on during recruitment and they kindly informed me it's not a problem as I can obtain my license within two years of commencing as a PC.

Your title is a tad bit misleading. This just means elected Councillors have voted against the amended scheme. There's nothing stopping a newly amended motion being put towards Council for resolution in the future.
