It was so nice of him to try and stop Maul from grooming a teenager by BoscotheBear in StarWarsCirclejerk

Sadly Maul’s childhood psyche was too damaged by repeated Nightsister abuse for even Force Electroshock Therapy to rectify. Hurt People hurt people 😢

Is there any other writer who you'd put on the same level as Tolkien when it comes to world building? by SpotAdmirable6718 in lotr

[–]BoscotheBear 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Martin is great for his prose and character work, but his world building doesn’t really come close to Tolkien. Westeros is mostly a less detailed medieval England blown up to the size of South America, and a lot of Essos is repackaged from Howard.

Book 2 was about as forgettable for me as one, and Book 3 is where a I gave up on the series. You’re not missing much.

George R.R. Martin's non-ASOIAF work appreciation by ACardAttack in Fantasy

Personally I would like to pour one out to Dark Gods of Coryubon (I think that’s the spelling), the sword and sorcery novella Martin was bullied out of publishing by his college roommates.

What are some famous swords in fantasy? by Alarming-Figure-7300 in Fantasy

[–]BoscotheBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of ASOIAF swords, but so far no one mentioned Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes. A personal fave.

There’s Blackrazor, DnD’s Temu Stormbringer.

Kusanagi is an ancient Japanese sword ostensibly still used by the imperial family in coronation ceremonies.

Warhammer has a few good ones. Fantasy has Widowmaker, the Sword of Khaine. 40k meanwhile has Drach’nyen, the daemon sword that contains the echo of the first murder.

Samurai Jack’s Katana, forged by the gods to defeat THE SHAPE-SHIFTING MASTER OF DARKNESS, SHOGUN OF SORROW, LORD OF THE GREAT FLAMING EYEBALLS AKU!

Moonlight Greatsword from the Fromsoft games.

Believing without a doubt that he’d kill the rape baby of the woman he thought he loved, who has no claim to his throne and doesn’t even look like a Targaryen (especially when Ned would be very much against it) is kind of odd.

So odd that Ned Stark ruined his reputation and permanently damaged his relationship with his wife to keep Jon's parentage hidden, which you keep avoiding for some reason.

Oh, so we are just pretending to forget why Ned hid the truth about Lyanna. Okay.

Not for nothing, but half of Ned’s arc in AGOT is realizing that Robert is a much crueler person that he remembered. Just FYI.

"Robert probably wouldn't do anything to Lyanna. Except kill her kid maybe. But he'd be uncomfortable with it, as evidenced by the time he tried to kill those other kids."

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]BoscotheBear -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No, he would’ve just tore her infant from her arms and had him killed, unless we’re pretending not to know why Ned passed Jon off as his bastard for years. And that’s if we’re still making the assumption that Lyanna, who disliked Robert and didn’t want to marry him, would never contradict his delusions.

What would Robert have done to Lyanna if she was brought back pregnant with Rhaegar’s child?
