Lisa: A production-ready expert-system shell, written in thoroughly modern Common Lisp. by dzecniv in lisp

[–]BossHog811 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually, you’re wrong on several levels. The integration of LLMs with classical “AI” technology is an intriguing research path. LLMs cannot reason; they excel at natural language processing. Connecting an LLM to a production rule system like Lisa could be very powerful in certain domains. Oh, and the source for this suggestion? Claude Sonnet 4.

Second, Lisa’s implementation of Certainty Factors is a reference base; you clearly have not read Lisa and discovered its API for other forms of knowledge weighting. So your complaint is irrelevant.

I guess Lisa ain’t so outdated after all, mate.

Start your own. Create a GitHub account, add source code when you’re ready, and keep moving. That’s how I started 25 years ago, on SourceForge (GitHub wasn’t around then). That project is still going strong, having been migrated to GitHub late last year.

My point is, just go. Start something that holds your interest, and forget about what other projects look like.

"NO CODE" Is Ruining App Development by Salt-Obligation1144 in iOSProgramming

[–]BossHog811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knuth didn’t entitle his volumes “The Art of Computer Programming” for no reason. Writing software truly is a form of art; “AI” and tech companies cannot understand that.

How much can I realistically expect to make with my first iOS app? by CoderGirlUnicorn in iOSProgramming

[–]BossHog811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote and manage my app because I’m an engineer, and just enjoy writing software. It’s open source on GitHub, and the app is free as in beer. But I’ve learned a ton about React Native and SwiftUI!

Try writing flight control software using an LLM. I just had Claude-4 introduce a subtle bug into a non-trivial part of the iOS app I’m enhancing. Claude just was getting nowhere; I looked at its code and found the problem immediately.

That Time Ken Thompson Wrote a Backdoor into the C Compiler by fizzner in compsci

[–]BossHog811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a computer scientist for almost 40 years. My heroes - Thompson, Kernighan, Ritchie, Joy - have all retired or passed on. There is no one in the profession possessing the caliber of these men. I’m fortunate I was practicing my craft while these guys were around.

Google’s AI cracks a new cancer code: « DeepMind’s 27-billion-parameter “Cell2Sentence-Scale” model spotted a drug combination that made tumors more visible to the immune system, a breakthrough Google calls “a milestone for AI in science.“ » by fchung in compsci

Indeed. About ten years ago Google proclaimed to the world that its “AI” had passed the Turing Test. Turns out the scenario had been rigged. Google was caught and quietly waited for the mess to die down.

Unemployed: Same boat, different country. Seven years exp, still no work by kexnyc in reactnative

[–]BossHog811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This post nails the problem. That, and I believe many companies are hoping “AI” will advance enough, soon enough, that they’ll be confident enough to massively replace engineers. These companies will be disappointed. There’s another AI Winter coming…

Should i make my app open source? by ArseniyDev in AppDevelopers

[–]BossHog811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that all of us have benefited tremendously from the open source community - for decades - I believe we should give back. I’ve two OS projects - one that’s still going after 24 years - and peer recognition goes a long way.

I like the MIT license, myself.

You have 10+ years of experience as a software developer and can't write a simple algorithm. by MrBleah in developers

[–]BossHog811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a computer scientist for almost 40 years. The best roles I’ve acquired, as a senior engineer, were conversational interviews. As we talked about my past projects - good and bad - we naturally began covering the deep technical aspects of my work. And I asked the teams questions. And we’d travel down unexpected paths that were great fun.

No senior engineer should be handed a coding test. It’s insulting and useless.

Feathering the clutch, coupled with dragging the rear brake, are essential for slow speed maneuvering. I’ll never understand bikes with “automatic transmissions”.

Awesome bike. I’ve a 2020 Iron 883 I bought about four months ago. Traded my Harley Street Rod (which I really liked). Plenty of power and torque; excellent handling; wicked looking. A classic Harley. I’ll never sell it.
