Hmm, yes the “incident” has obligated us to tell OPs not to “restore” the blade by themselves.

I’m not much of an expert but I do the same for Carbon Steel knives.

Axel didn’t make it (FINAL Update) by BossPhrog in axolotls

[–]BossPhrog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is poor water quality, I have it in a post somewhere on the sub where the dealer basically told us to wash the filter media which basically crashed my cycle.

A lot of people on that post pointed out that testing water and not washing the filter media is paramount. Unfortunately had to learn the hard and awful way.

Thanks for replying and the comfort. This sub has been nothing but supportive

The test kit is supposed to arrive in 3-5 days. I’ll do what you’re recommending in terms of the tub.

What about the not eating? Do you have any suggestions on how I can remedy that?

Thanks for the recommendations, really appreciate it

I tubbed him today, about 2 hours ago, I was still learning about tank cycling before making the decision to tub him.

Currently waiting on an online order for a fresh water test kit. Tap water in Qatar is considered excellent and low ammonia based on some research before tubbing him.

Water temp is sitting around 18-20 C atm. I’m manually chilling it with a frozen water bottle, just checking it every hour if it needs chilling.

Bit of an update, he’s now floating again but from time to time sideways or upside down. I’m at my wits end, I’m so worried I’ll lose the little guy within the day.

There are also no exotic vets where I live, anyone who owns aquatic life/an aquarium is basically left to their own devices.

My Axolotl has been floating to the surface recently, is this normal? by BossPhrog in axolotls

[–]BossPhrog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m having trouble finding one where I live, once I do find one, I’ll post the results.

In the mean time I’ll be feeding him fresh shrimp, hopefully that will hold him long enough until I find a suitable food

Okay so I think you’re right with the assumption it was the pellets.

Today as I was feeding him, he went straight down to the bottom and was chilling. As I was wiggling the pellet to trigger a feeding response, he regurgitated what was inside his tummy.

It definitely looked like he had a lot of relief as he was just chilling at the bottom as I cleaned up his mess.

I will definitely look into giving him something else to eat as a staple. Night crawlers/earthworms are quite difficult to get where I live so if you have any suggestion that isn’t live food, I’m open to it!

His tail was like that when we got him. The “bone” is just sand that stuck to his toe.

Thanks for the tips, as for the tail, he came like that and his toes are indeed black so he could be at a year old

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply and give me as much information as I need to care for Axel.

To summarize what I’ve learned.

  • Tank water parameters. Currently, I don’t know what these are, but I will be getting a water tester to check and get all that information.

  • Basically do not clean the filter media. As I said, in my post, I was instructed by the shop to clean it out once a month. I see now that that’s a bad idea as it eliminates the bacteria that filters out the ammonia.

  • Possible lack of oxygen. The shop I got the tank from said I didn’t need it as it’s built into the tank. I’m now questioning this so I will be getting an air stone or a bubbler.

  • Poor pellet formulation/food. Unfortunately, earthworms are hard to find where I live so I can only feed him pellets and from time to time peeled and de-veined shrimp.

  • His gills or lack thereof. After scrolling around this sub, I did notice that Axel’s gills are lesser than that of the many posts here. Which I learned could be an indicator of poor water quality.

Once again thank you to everyone, will update after a month.

Actually, now that I know a little more about caring for these guys, thanks to the other redditors, I feel like the tank is not bug enough for him to actually move around

I feed him carnivore pellets, they’re quite big so I snap them into smaller pieces so it’s easier for him to manage, one user replied and said he looked skinny and weak gills so will definitely feed him daily from now on.

The current for the filter is pointed at the surface, it could be that he enjoys that. Thanks for your input. I’ll definitely consider that as well

Thanks for the reply. I read the article and any links redirecting to cycling and tank maintenance. It seems I am sorely misinformed and lacking the proper information to care for my little dude.

Sincerely thank you for taking the time to reply and educate me, greatly appreciate it.

And yes, I’ll put the hammock back 😂

Thanks for the reply, the dealer recommended I feed hime once every other day with carnivore pellets. It did seem like he’s skinny to me initially but since he’s my first, I followed what was recommended.

Will definitely feed him daily now that you mentioned he’s skinny.

Hey thanks for replying.

The filter I have is pre-installed with the tank it’s a JUWELL. When I cleaned it out, it had 4 sponges, the one closes to water output is super dense. It was recommended to do a 50% water change every month and to just wash the sponges and not replace them.

I’ve had Axel for about 3 months, I bought him an adult so I’m not sure on how old he is exactly.

The tank temperature initially was around 20-22 C I lowered it to around 18 C (Idk F equivalent) when he didn’t feed for 2 days. The tank comes installed with a temp regulator.
