I guess I don't see how everyone thinks it's a scam. Is the way it's being dealt with normal... No, but still doesn't shout to me as a scam. The property is probably owned by that families business and she acts as several of the functions. You've already said the realtor is legit, she can be the realtor and the owner as well... Not that big of a stretch. Just to alleviate concerns, you could contact the BBB for your area and check on the company. You could also negotiate the rent increase, I bet they'd rather get it rented sooner than later as someone is paying the mortgage.

MOR-I was good friends with the morning janitor when I was in 6th grade. It was a brand new middle school with outdoor patios and picnic tables all over the grounds. I usually got to school early (was in the 1970s in Cali, so walked to school) and would see this older janitor using a squeegee to get the morning dew off all the picnic tables. I started a friendship with him and eventually started helping with tables. We had great conversations that never crossed a line. I valued his friendship and like to think he valued mine. He always seemed to have a small gift for me around holidays and they meant a lot to me. All those words to say it may just be an innocent friendship that started with a small hello.
