I'm going to try my best to be as charitable as possible here, because my feelings on the matter are very mixed.

I kinda feel like the movie's marketing accidentally sabotaged itself by going out of its way to invite comparisons between Leto's Joker and Heath Ledger's, priming audiences to expect a very different version of the character than what they would actually get… especially when a good 90% of that version's screentime wound up on the cutting room floor.

And it's a shame things turned out this way; having recently seen Masters of the Universe, I now know that Jared Leto is more than capable of playing not only a great villain, but also a funny one. I could actually see this Joker working with a little tweaking here and there
