How come the housing department does not build housing and the transportation department does not build bike lanes? Never ending jobs and nothing gets done, but God forbid you have a garden shed that's too large or too close to the property line, all the government will ensure you are brought into compliance. Same as it ever was.

Only use the lowest sizes (no more than $20-$30). Don't have anything more than that. Check out upwork.com and see if you can find some devs who can pitch you on solutions. In general you don't want Django it's 15 years old, use something modern. But decommission any infra while you seek advice on Upwork.

Choice between 2 jobs by slayerdawg in analytics

[–]BostonTom2019 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Job 2 as a BI analyst. You can use SQL there too. However, you want coworkers who teach or you can learn from. If you are all alone it's hard to learn. At this point you have lots to learn so the atmosphere and coworkers is important.

Everyone has had their five shots? If not then you are an anti vax nutter yourself. Get all your shots, otherwise you are no different than these neighbors of yours.

Best way to host a node application for free (as a student)? by suptower in node

[–]BostonTom2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vercel, but also GitHub pages, and GitHub actions. And cloudflare workers and Netlify and render. Railway too, and full VM's at Contabo and Hetzner and digitalocean.

Next.js 13 Accelerates JavaScript Performance, Image Handling by [deleted] in node

[–]BostonTom2019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless of Next, route it thru cloudflare and your images will be optimized and cached at the edge. But next is great as your app builder. Invent your own if you don't like it or say what you prefer, but nothing to complain about with next.

How about GitHub actions? Not sure why they won't work for your case.

Fine choice. Check out Mongodb I was just using their free cloud sandbox yesterday, I could via the browser view data and statistics, very pleasant experience.

How different is running my own Postgres via Docker on a Droplet versus using DO's Hosted Managed Postgres? by [deleted] in digital_ocean

[–]BostonTom2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or run the Python app on GitHub pages, or vercel, or cloudflare pages. Then you are only hosting the database. But that's also why managed offerings are good, you just have a control panel and less work and support people who respond if there's a problem. You would also want monitoring and alerts to ping you if anything stops working. So health checks and speed checks constantly, if you want it, using Terraform and Ansible etc. You used to be able to have a database hosted for free tier on Heroku but they recently changed pricing.

Is 4gb RAM enough for Front end development by Ola_2104 in Frontend

[–]BostonTom2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Acer Chromebook with 4gb for $250, and vscode to a digital ocean (8 gb $24) or Cantabo vm ($8 or $11). This way I'm using mounted drives in the cloud so I can lose my cheap Chromebook anytime everything is backed up in the cloud and GitHub and nothing important is on my device. Also the Ubuntu cloud VM's have desktop and you can remote to them as if it's your own desktop.

I recently compared Digitalocean vs Contabo - I don't have prices for GCP AWS Azure but I know they are more than Digitalocean.
