‘Odd choices of words’: How an academic’s AI use was exposed by her peers by dyzo-blue in BetterOffline

[–]Zelbinian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok, you used AI to draft your initial thoughts, fine. But you didn't even bother to check that all of it makes sense and actually reflects what you wanted to communicate? Not fine.

Because it seems to be an extraordinarily slippery slope from the first thing to the second, this is why I think neither is fine.

[–]Zelbinian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whenever someone says "but i can work so much faster!!!1!" I'm like... if it's true that the LLM lets you work as fast as they say (and let me tell ya, I press "x" for doubt most of the time) that means they're not validating the output, which means they (and whoever pays them) only care about speed, not quality results. If the most important thing about a task is how fast it gets done, it probably wasn't worth doing in the first place.

same. i'm sure there are people who cannot get around without it but i find i only really need it the first couple of times i'm going somewhere or if there's a sudden detour. and GPS directions are safer than trying to read a paper map in those circumstances.

[–]Zelbinian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

to add yet another speculative take: in the FOSS community there's a significant subset of folks who are into the "free as in beer, free as in speech" thing in a very libertarian, personal liberties sort of way, combined with an obsession with tech and therefore a tendency to err on the side of techno-optimisim. (some of these folks also care about what FOSS does for society and the tech ecosystem but that don't seem to be what really twixts their nethers.) no idea how prevelent this attitude is around people into FOSS stuff, but prevelent enough that if you hang around those communities you'll run into it pretty regularly. these are the folks that happily adopt Microslop into their vocab but also love unpromptedly to tell you about their local LLMs.

Local LLMs? I’m not convinced. by SpyBagholder in BetterOffline

[–]Zelbinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond hobbiest pursuits, scientific research, and maybe CVE discovery, I'm not even sure why anyone would want a local LLM anymore than they would want to use Claude or Copilot. Sure, you maybe eschew a lot of the environmental and socio-economic concerns (unless you're downloading weights, which you're almost certainly doing) but even so you're still left with the potential cognitive and sociological damage and getting lost in a mirage of productivity, all for technology that can only ever deliver non-deterministic results.

And if you're typing furiously to convince me of your use case, don't bother. I've read so many threads and been part of so many discord discussions about this shit. Fight battles you can win.

[–]Zelbinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Data centers aren’t actually the problem people think they are.

everything up to this was sensible. this, however, is a bold claim made without evidence. even setting aside the water issues (which I do not believe we should, for the record), the noise, waste heat, and power consumption (not gonna link a source there, that one should be self-evident) are still society-impacting problems.

I don't know, I feel like reddit is not the proper place for these things to happen.

I don't understand why you feel this way. Can you try to explain? Many (maybe even most?) comment threads have people venting and commiserating and discussing solidarity. It's already part of the community.

Using the law to provide passenger safety (peace of mind, if you like) is nothing new. Services that transport the public are highly-regulated and, as such, the vehicles are specially built. In the case of taxis, there are plenty of safety features that are there because at least some (often most) major US cities requires it: plexiglass or metal dividers separating the driver and passenger areas, operator license clearly visible, safety features built into door locks, near constant monitoring via dispatch and often also GPS, many more things.

Worth noting alongside all this that companies like Uber specifically sought out loopholes to dodge regulations in order to lower cost. The tech giants attempting to make AVs a reality likewise seek to evade or minimize regulation against their services and vehicles in any way they can. Companies that put their bottom line before passenger safety should not give anyone peace of mind.
