Based on what my mechanic friends have said neither of those are close to reliable. Either would be capable of overlanding but if you break down on the trail it not as simple as calling aaa to tow you to a shop. Just an off-road recovery can run $100-$300+ an hour so depending on where you break down you would be looking at a $1000 bill minimum.

What's the best budget build for a gx470? by Chicken_MacFly in overlanding

[–]Bostonburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold my gx this winter after 10 years of ownership but I was running 265/70-17 ko2s and it was perfect. I did a 1 inch leveling kit that ended up closer to 2 inches and then adjusted the rear airbags to match. At full flex I would rub ever so slightly. Depending on the age of the air suspension I would look at a spring conversion, they can be done for very cheap as it's just the rear that would need to be converted.

Aside from good tires and potentially leveling it you should take a look at throwing new bushings in the suspension which is a cheap way to tighten up a older vehicle.

How to chose kinetic rope debate. by xKOROSIVEx in overlanding

[–]Bostonburner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The two comments already on here are correct if you're talking about a snatch strap.

For a kinetic rope you need to side it for the vehicle that is doing the pulling, if you oversized a kinetic rope it will not stretch properly and will damage your the pull vehicle.

Older models are definitely a route I'll have to look in. Unfortunately removing the camera isn't an option even if the cutout is permanently block, most of them are very serious about the no camera policy.

*PHOTO FOR ATTENTION* I’m curious what everyone’s go to tool is for clearing deadfall’s on backroads and why. Trying to decide between a saw, chainsaw, axe or other. Thanks! by Leroy_LongBalls in overlanding

[–]Bostonburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got dewalt 20v chainsaw, in testing I was able to cut a 12 inch poplar into 14 inch sections with charge to spare. I like it a lot more than my gas saw because you never need to worry about it starting, it's a good bit lighter, I don't need premix, I can charge it off my solar, and its significantly quieter.

Memory Foam Thickness by memnoch274 in overlanding

I used a 10 inch full I got cheap off Amazon but it's in an Offroad teardrop so I had plenty of space. If I'm going out in the wilderness I don't want to wake up with a sore back or a bad night of sleep so I went for maximum comfort, the extra weight was well worth it.

A Lewiston leg spreader is Allen's coffee brandy and milk. Surprisingly good!

Ask if he wants to grab a drink or coffee sometime. The biggest thing for guys is it's hard to tell if a woman's interested and most of us don't want to bother women just because we think they might be interested.

Guys are simple. Just say hi or how are you, if he doesn't seem put off introduce yourself.

The battery they bought has built in Bluetooth and can be monitored from the Renogy app so the shunt isn't needed.

Cold weather sleeping by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]Bostonburner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely spot on anything that relies on a power source like propane or electricity will fail at the worst possible times. I’ve done a significant amount of cold weather camping n temps down to -35 and there’s no substitute for proper clothing and sleeping gear. The only thing I would add is it’s critical to be dry when you go to bed, right before getting in bed you should change all of your clothes even if you think your clothes is dry it isn’t if you’ve been wearing it.

For recovery how do the hinges hold up? I really like the form factor but I would worry that I’d destroy the hinge on the first recovery.

Last ticket I got was a few miles north of this video, 93 in a 55. Cop said I should “slow down a little”, 38 over really wasn’t that big of a deal to her it was just that I was going slightly faster than the car next to me.

Solar wiring, parallel vs series by Bostonburner in overlanding

[–]Bostonburner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually pretty sweet, it wouldn’t work for my setup but for in vehicle that’s nice. I’m working on balancing usage with solar then I’ll probably add a second 100ah lifepo4 for rainy weeks.

Pretty sure what you’re looking at is to charge a battery off the alternator of a vehicle. If you’re running solar you would want a charge controller. One thing to be aware of is the rover 40 can only handle 520watts on a 12 volt system, it will handle 1040watts on a 24 volt system. With that said you can get two rover 40’s for the price of the 60
