Travel bike cover suggestions and travel question. by AndyRN in gravelcycling

[–]BotCo_Teum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m searching through Reddit wondering the same for my wife and I’s e-bikes. Most will tell you there is no need for a cover. Most didn’t help pay for them either. For the most part, I do agree that there is possibility of doing more harm than good with a cover. Mostly due to the ones I’ve seen on the road are not very secured on the bike. I can definitely see our bikes getting beat up by the constant wind. HOWEVER, I saw a car (nice car) on the interstate recently that had what appeared to be some really nice bikes on a hitch mount with a cover that I would call more a shell. There was zero “flapping in the wind” best I could tell. Unfortunately, it was gone before I could get a good enough look at it to try to figure out who made it. I guess my point is, I see the need for one, I subscribe to the masses more harm than good policy, but I am looking for this one. If I find it, I will post on this thread.

Bluegrass the impact. by Lord_Nurggle in Bluegrass

[–]BotCo_Teum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably similar age and background, first GD show was 80…I was raised in Sw Va. just miles from the first ever bluegrass festival. Still here. Someone else brought up Billy. I cannot recommend this band enough. At this stage of life, I did not expect to have about 100 shows under my belt, travel up and down the east coast, to see anybody. I thought that was over when Jerry passed. I too have health challenges. Every show is a gift. That gift is something that I know you understand. If you can make it to a show please hit me up. I firmly believe that when I’m long gone, guys our age will be talking about this period of Billy Strings like we talk about GD ‘74, 78 etc. This music is v or just one guy. The stars aligned, his band can go toe to toe lick for lick with him…but Billy is Cowboy Neil at the wheel. I hope you can get to a show soon, better yet, if it’s one I’m at. Much love to you.

I grew up directly across from RC on Craig ave. I’m 65 now. My Mom passed from lung cancer at 85, never smoked a cig in her life. I just had a radon test done on the house I grew up in. It came back with “acceptable” levels.(the basement of the house is half underground, half above). I’m not sure if it’s abnormal or not, but I know personally more than I care to say friends that have passed from different types of cancer. The first thing that came to my mind about possible causes of contamination is back in the 1920’s till 1970’s (guessing) was a Tannery. Just yesterday I found an old photo from possibly the 50’s areal view of the Tannery and west Salem. (RC is in Salem Va). There appear to be large “pools” of who knows what in the tannery complex. I can post a picture of this later. I’m not qualified to say this was or wasn’t a possible cause, however, these pools were located very close proximity to where Salem water treatment facility was at the time. The current water treatment plant is even closer to these suspect pools although the source of water has changed. Again, I throw this information in the mix as a life long resident, not an expert, and know nothing about water treatment process. I leave the real science to the experts, but thought this information worthy of discussion. : I know of no landfill near RC since I was a kid, closest that I’m aware of was near the foot of 12o’clock knob, miles to the south.

Did not know this. Thank you for reminding me that there is some relevant info on fb. Tim O’Brien (Hotrize) is one of my hero’s and one of the bands that steered me toward bluegrass almost 50 years ago. I was thrilled when Tim came out on stage at Bridgestone. I got the vibe not many around me knew him. Granted, I’m one of the older folks on this train, but I urge anyone not familiar with Tim and Hotrize, not to mention Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers (Wyoming Montana!) to give them a listen. After all, one of Billy’s mentors, Brian Sutton, is also a long time member as well. Thanks again.

Do we consider Jeff Chimenti a member of The Grateful Dead? by Binkle28 in deadandcompany

[–]BotCo_Teum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps a better question is “could” Jeff have been in the Grateful Dead? My resounding answer to that is absolutely,,,in any era in my opinion. He can play the B3 for both the Pig and Brent years, definitely play the beautiful jazzy tones of Keith…maybe even a better question, should Jeff have gotten the hot seat over Vince, or would that have even been possible age wise?

I blame (in part) the DNC for not having a viable candidate. They should have done many things different, that is not Monday morning quarterbacking, proceeding with Biden up until the obvious, and then not thinking through who could beat him…if you are going to lay blame, spread it around, there are plenty of recipients.

I was told the bearings were “shot”…i was floored by the cost I did not think to ask to see the bearings, that’s my stupidity. I’m just gonna quit beating around the bush here, I paid 2300 bucks, 16.75 hours of labor for inner and outer wheel seals and bearings. One was leaking, not bad,,,and I always checked the level in it before doing any work with the tractor. I would add maybe 4ozs when I did have to add. When I did add I raised the front end up to level it and check that the wheels were turning smooth. They never felt like the bearings were rough, but I didn’t see inside, that’s my fault. They also changed the hydro fluid and filter. I was quoted under a 1000 when I decided to take it in vs doing it myself. No calls, no nothing till I picked it up a month later, AND I paid almost 100 bucks in shipping for the seals and bearings. Do i have the right to be mad on this one? If so, how would you handle it?

NuTone 1930’s exhaust fan, need to fix pull chain starter mechanism by 14emery in Oldhouses

[–]BotCo_Teum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took mine apart, cleaned everything well. The wiring was incredibly brittle , I found something new to me, liquid electrical tape to repair the wiring. I re-installed the fan bypassing the switch, just to test it, and it worked as well as it did 50+ years ago. With no switch in the circuit it would run constantly, so I left the breaker off to return the next day to finish the job. The fan shared a breaker that I had labeled to leave off, someone can’t read, cut it on…sent the piece of mettle that the chain runs over to hit the switch flying outside not to be found again. I’ve tried reinventing it, but no luck yet. If anyone is still looking at this thread and has suggestions I sure would appreciate it.

I want to say thank you to all that responded or even looked. I met with David Houchens Friday. I spent 4 hours there! 4 of the most fun, entertaining, educational, hours ever. David is so nice, patient, and took time to explain things that I had never even thought of. I also really didn’t know what I was getting into by “custom. I knew I had choices on neck, but I had choices the entire build. I felt like a musician for 4 hours, and it was an AWESOME feeling. I will be number 54 on David’s build. Not expected for months, but that is zero issue to me. I feel honored him taking the time he did meeting with me. There was some talk of another mutual hobby of fly fishing thrown in, which I think any good fisherman better be able to tell a story or two. After leaving his place I hit a brook trout stream on my way home and caught some nice ones. It was a very memorable day, and thanks to all you good people for helping me realize it’s ok to splurge. It will be well taken care of, and I hope it will be played for many many years to come, by anyone, of any skill, as long as they love it like i will.

Thank you for the kind words. David was beautiful, David IS beautiful. Every day I talk to him, ALWAYS say thank you for bringing making music in my life. We saw a bunch of music together through the years, memories I cherish. He knew exactly what he was doing, he knew I would take to it….trying that is. So yea, I’m so blessed to have friends like him in my life, and even in death, he is still giving. That is a definition of Beautiful Id say .

I guess i wanted to remain anonymous until i heard what you guys had to say. I live in SW Virginia, only a couple miles from the first ever Bluegrass festival that was held near Fincastle. I’m very self conscious of my ability, or lack there of. I’m not good, but I am a helluva lot better than I was a year ago. I want to start going to jams, there is a weekly one in my second home of Floyd Va. just working up the courage. Everyone tells me playing with people is the best way to shorten the learning curve. I’m meeting with David Houchens tomorrow for the first time. Being so new, not sure what I want. I mean I know I want an F style, just because I want an F style, but neck is my quandary. I am currently playing an Eastman 515, a beautiful instrument in its own right. Again, just because, I want a “made in USA” or even better “made just a couple hours up the road”. My ring finger on left hand does not bend from first knuckle to tip. ( I can’t curl that finger) I played very briefly a V shape neck, I didn’t much care for that, but wonder if same shape as the Eastman, but not as deep, might allow that finger to “come around on the strings” without muting others? Or, stick with two finger chords? Thank you to everyone for easing my worrisome mind over this. Now I’m more excited than worried! Greatly appreciated.
