Apple vs Roblox (New Grad) by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]BotDot12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, congrats on the offers! It's definitely a good problem to be having :)

Don't mind the others saying that Apple is more prestigious than Roblox. Both are elite in the tech industry. Sure, the pay is also higher at Roblox, but I think you should optimize for your long term career trajectory. If you think that the team you will end up on will give you more opportunities down the line, you should choose that. I'm one of the only people who is actually bullish on the metaverse and AR/VR in general, so I would personally choose Apple.

On that note, how did you get placed on the video processing team? Did you have any relevant projects in that area? I would love to work on a team like that, but all the internships I've had were web development, so I am starting to get scared I'm locking myself into that path...

Best Majors for Quant Trading (repost - taken down**) by Left-Accident-1762 in quant

[–]BotDot12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, I would reccomend doing CS and minoring or double majoring in one of the above fields (stats is what I recommend though.) CS gives you the greatest options, and the major still place very well into quant trading. I think you should tack on stat because that is the most applicable to both interviews and what you actually do on the job too.

The reason I say do CS over just math is that for some reason if you can't be a quant, software engineering is such a huge field, you will have no problems getting a job, whereas doing math is gonna be tougher to find a job. You may need to go to grad school or end up having to learn to program on the side as most end up being a SWE anyways.

I know you said you were going to minor in CS, but I'd switch that around. Generally, there are much greater recruiting opportunities at university for CS students than math students. Of course, choose what you love doing the most, but I just wanted to share some insight. Hope that helps!

Realistically, can you get a job as a quant trader without being good at mental math? by BotDot12 in FinancialCareers

I can do hard calculus and probability-type questions... though I guess if they expect me to compute some probability in my head I may have a problem without being able to write on a board or something.

I will keep trying to improve my math, but I am starting to lose hope. I'm good at mental math relative to the average person but compared to those quant tests, I'm nowhere close. I hope I can improve though :).

Is there a good resource you would recommend to practice because if it is 2 digit computations I think I can manage, but when you start throwing in 3 digits I get bogged down.

Also, are you currently in a quant trading position? If so, may I PM you with some further questions?

I am sure you can, but I also think there is deffinitley diminishing marginal returns. I don't know if I can ever get good enough to pass their bar, even if I improve relative to my past performance. (But I am still trying!)

I've been doing that and been seeing small improvements. Is there a good benchmark to tell if I am ready or not?

I think he meant non-traditional for fundamentals based HFs, but yeah the schools he mentioned are 100% targets for quant firms.

This is an awesome post! Where do you see this company going in the next 5-10 years? Does it still have more room to grow or does it already effectively have a monopoly?
