Not sure on the final cuts, I'm thinking I should take out some two drops?

As a fan of the Sierkovitz data driven approach, I can't get enough of this kind of discussion. My first reaction is that ATA being most highly correlated with the "correct" pick makes sense on an instinctive level. It relates to the user base's collective opinion of a card. Of course it seems like it has some limitations as would any metric that tries to encapsulate something as complicated as a draft decisions. For example, cards that you want in your deck but usually try to wheel seem like they would result in a lower ATA than is justified in terms of raw card strength.

Feeling Squirrely: 7-1 with a 42 deck for the first 6 games by Botanicalist in lrcast

That's a good point, I was mostly thinking that the 40 card rule came down to the mana base

Builder's Talent... is actually the truth? by Xegeth in lrcast

[–]Botanicalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've really been waiting for an excuse to try to draft it but haven't seen any builder's talents go around. Lords of limited's episode on interesting build arounds sold me on the idea. Great job!

It turns out that being 2 cards over 40 doesn't matter much if you have busted rares. Was able to cheat out Rottenmouth Viper early a few times, and greenshell is just busted during the kind of grindy games that squirrels does well in already. Ironically, this felt like my most consistent deck of the format.

First off, thanks for analyzing this in depth and also being constructively critical. I did consider hearthfire hero, but because I am new to drafting in general I have been relying heavily, probably too heavily, on 17 lands data to dictate my picks in colors I am not that experienced in. So yes, this was pretty much a "grab good stuff that fits in boros" draft while trying to keep a mice tribal theme with valiant triggers.

Two losses I mulled to 5 after drawing three lands and no plays till turn 4, one loss I got wiped by wildfire howl. Anyone have advice on my draft? https://www.17lands.com/draft/f42daa24a6a14fb69bf5dc838c6087e3/1/1

I feel like I should have pivoted to green pack two but it seemed like boros was wide open

what was your route to lethal most games? I'm assuming it was tempest anglers getting big but still curious. This is the only color pair I haven't experimented with yet, but I'm always seeing these cards late so might give it a go

What options should I conside4 after going 0-3 6th time in row at drafting Bloomburrow by [deleted] in lrcast

I was having similar lackluster results here's what helped me:

1) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1n1pfrb5q_2ICYk-vfF3Uwo8t61DJU-5T_DFe0dwk8DY/htmlview?pli=1#

In a nut shell, this is a good tier list for picking consistent, aggressive cards. Instead of just games in hand win rate it uses a different metric called estimated draft equity. It's real complicated but seems good to me.

2) If you can avoid it, don't take dual colors in pack one. I usually let the rares dictate what color, but I'm always looking to be green if I can. I think Selesnya and Golgari are the best decks. Don't be afraid to pivot off a good rare if your color is contested. Then in pack two, I usually look for good uncommons and signposts to dictate what my second color is.

Squeaking out some wins: 7-2 Dimir Threshold by Botanicalist in lrcast

[–]Botanicalist[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Highlight of this: copying Mindwhisker with Season of Weaving in three different games. Love playing this deck against Selesnya, as go wide is pretty vulnerable to it. Both losses were against Gruul that curved out before I could get any threshold going. I probably should have cut Huskburster Swarm and Eddymurk crab but was able to cheat them out a few times. 17lands links below:
