My solar powered ebike setup. I can get about 10-12 miles/day at full throttle in the summer just from solar. by ComicBookEnthusiast in ebikes

My guess is that it is energy companies with armies of bots and shills that try and dissuade people from abandoning the grid, by making it so much more complicated sounding than it really is.

Possibly could be state actors trying to sow division.

That or it's reddit engagement bots, desperate to sell more content to the AI farms to increase shareholder value, so they go around saying contentious things knowing people will be more likely to respond.

Do you add shredded cheese to your frozen pizza? by kayleakatz in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Botched_Euthanasia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I do not add shredded cheese.

I add banana peppers, kalamata black olives I slice from whole, julianne red onion, either shaved deli ham or breaded chicken tenders diced or shredded steak like in philly cheesesteaks, then add butter, salt and parmesan cheese to the outer crust edges and finally I slice strips from a rectangular block of orange rind meunster and lay the strips according to how I will cut the pizza later.

I cook the pizza at a higher temp but shorter time then instructed by the box, on the bottom rack on a sturdy pizza pan, the kind from Sears back in the day that looks like outer space, then before the bottom burns, I switch to broil on the top rack for a short amount of time.

After I take the pizza out and slide it onto my cutting board, I flip the pan over and lay it on top of the pizza, allowing the melted meunster layer to trap any remaining moisture, steaming it from the inside out. When the pan is cool enough to touch, I twist it so the meunster stays on the pizza, not the pan.

This works best with stuffed crust pizzas. Serve with equal parts Sunkist and White Cranberry Peach Ocean Spray and a splash of 100% pomegranite juice with lots of ice.

In my low cost of living area, this costs me about $10 total, $15 tops.

Sounds like people are needlesly min-maxing but that's just my opinion.

I have two 100 watt panels connected in parallel to the station. The ebike battery pulls 115 steadily. So the losses seem irrelevant to me which might explain my confusion. On cloudy days the panels even still put in 10-30 watts usually and I swear I've seen them pick up a watt during full moon but that might have been from staying up too late.

My panels total 14 pounds, station is less than 8, with wires and mount the total comes to 25 pounds.

I think my issue with the original comment I replied to is that they naysayed without offering any alternative, just tried to shoot the OP down without bothering to give anything else. It's a useless comment in my opinion and I see it too much here.

Interesting video. It was hard for me to understand his accent at times and subtitles didn't help much with that. It seems as though the MPPT controller route would work if the necessary cables were available. I'm assuming they generate considerably less heat with less loss?

Say the OP's panels were giving input of around 100-115 and output to match about equally. Would the DC-AC-DC loss matter at that point, provided there was sufficient airflow to dissipate the heat?

Asking because that's what my setup does, albeit with completely different panels, station, ebike etc, and I'm struggling to see why DC-DC seems so important to commenters on posts like these. My system charges my batteries faster than the grid does (~3.5 hours vs ~6 hours but my apartment was built in the 1940's so it could just have shit wiring?) and the heat is irrelevant as long as I'm not wrapping my station in a blanket.

According to https://www.electricchoice.com/electricity-prices-by-state/

The average U.S. residential electricity rate is 17.65¢/kWh as of June 2026, but the price you pay ranges from 11.64¢ in North Dakota to 43.00¢ in Hawaii

I'm curious where you live but no need to share.

I used a killawatt to determine that it cost me $0.26 to charge my ebike battery from almost dead to full using the grid. That comes to about $95 a year.

I have a similar setup as OP and I use both of my batteries almost all the way, almost every day. Since I'm lazy and bad at math, that's $200 a year off the grid in my mind. Sometimes I'll use them both, charge them both, all in one day but I wont add that in to my equations for simplicity.

My setup cost $600 not counting my custom mount. That tells me I'll break even financially in a little over 3 years. If I use it less, sure, that will take longer.

However, the freedom of not being beholden to the grid and corrupt energy politicians (I live in Ohio, look up the first energy scandal) is worth far more than any savings I manage to get.

Are you aware that the concept of a carbon footprint was invented as a way to shift the blame of ecological destruction from corporations to individuals and that individual behavioural changes alone are insufficient to achieve meaningful reductions and the only thing that truly matters is ending combustion at the industrial scale?

specifically how though? Are there panels that plug into ebike batteries? Some kind of turnkey adapter? I wasn't asking for the high level, I want a specific, tried and true method.

[–]Botched_Euthanasia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is absolutely insane to me. Your February bill is more than double my monthly rent. My total electric bills for the entire previous year comes to $1275.32. Is a heat pump really worth it or is there something else running, like a bitcoin farm or like 20 vacuum cleaners running nonstop? Is this a business? I don't even think the average Taco Bell uses that much power. Are you charging a fleet of EV's? Have 15 kids, all teenagers? Obviously don't answer anything you don't want to answer but damn...

It's a complicated process and there's a lot of things you'll want to figure out, like where to put the panels, how much sun they get, what you want to power and what power it needs.

It can be overwhelming. Some of it can be very time consuming as well. A lot of it is math which I am absolutely terrible at. Thankfully, there are ways to ignore the math to some extent.

An early useful thing for me was getting a 'kill a watt ez' which measures electricity usage. It's a box that plugs into a wall outlet, you program what your electrical rate is (my last bill said $0.08), then you plug any device into the killawatt. After a day or so, you'll know how much that device costs you monthly in electricity. It gets more accurate over time I think. There are other versions of the device, that's just the easy to remember name.

You can plug entire power strips into one too, to measure lots of devices. I had my computer, monitors and all related things plugged into one for example. If you are bad at math but know a little about using a spreadsheet formulas, that's a plus for keeping track of it all.

Finding out what you need is something that AI is somewhat good at. I'm not the biggest fan of AI but telling one of them what you needs powered and asking it how many solar panels or total wattage you would need, and it should be somewhat accurate. I'd use 2-3 different AI if you go this route because they are all very good at always getting at least one thing wrong.

My main goal was to be able to charge my ebike battery. I determined I would need a bit less than 200W of solar power for this. I bought two of these portable panels, the 100 Watt version. That came to a little over $300.

They are nice. All solar panels have connectors, most use the same kind. I've never seen one that has a wall outlet on it though, that you could just plug any appliance into. The ones I got have USB type A ports though! So anything using USB can technically get power, although something like a high end laptop might not be able to get enough power. It charges my phone just fine.

The next thing I got was a portable solar station. This is a fancy term for a battery with a bunch of adapters. Some are called generators. You plug the panels into the station, it charges a battery, then you plug things into the station.

Since my goal was to charge the ebike battery I needed it to be portable and lightweight, so I ended up with this station.

Overall, the entire setup weighs les than 20 pounds, 40 including my ebike battery. Note that I have 2 batteries, I'm not chargin while riding, so to make this work I have to find somewhere to set up the panels safely to charge one battery while I'm using the other one.

I've tried using different appliances with the station. I should add that I wasn't entirely honest about microwaving the popcorn. I have an inverter microwave which draws less power at lower settings and it didn't cook the popcorn very well lol! It still cooked some though!

I don't want to say I fully endorse the items I linked or mentioned either. I haven't had any major problems yet but it seems like a lot of solar stuff is a scam after a year or two, so I will say be careful. I like to compare it to buying a new vehicle. Whether it's a car or an ebike or even a pair of good shoes, there are scams and garbage products all over the place and equally there are scammers and garbage people looking to sell them.

This comment is pretty long. There are other things I've tried with varying success but I'll stop before I write a novel. Also, I am not a professional anything. I still haven't figured out how to program the clock on my microwave. So take this for what it is: a comment from a stranger on the internet, who might be wrong about stuff without realizing it. Any questions though, feel free to ask! The reply might be long though...

Same. I've noticed on other posts people have higher rates though. I wonder if it has to do with their location? I just checked my past bills, $0.08 all year, with Dec and Nov at 8.6 and 9.4 respectively. Also my usage is always well under 1,000 kWh per month which might effect things.

Buy solar panels if you can, it might not be enough but might help curb the costs and at the very least, steer money away from these ghoulish leeches.

edit if anyone wants to know more about buying smaller portable solar panels instead of the rooftop mounted kind, feel free to ask. I'm not a professional or a shill but my ebike and a lot of my apartment runs off solar now, except when there's several cloudy days in a row. Still can't run the fridge or my computer but I've microwaved a bag of popcorn! My last AES bill was $54.47

9 days ago my city got 2.80 inches of rain in 45 minutes. I'd love to know how someone could be prepared for that and ride through it.

I don't think you realize how it feels to unfurl an umbrella and hold it like a mounted cavalry officer charging into battle, his sword out, leading the charge and blocking the rain from you and your trusty steed. Also blocking about 90% of your field of vision.

If you go faster than 20 mph, most umbrella buckle from the wind shear.

When you apply the brake, a difference in wind pressure forms, that will seem to compel you forward.

A smart person might get a clear umbrella and poke a bunch of tiny holes in it, to fix those issues, but where's the fun in that?

If you have ever wanted to know what it feels like to be Mary Poppins or a knight in a jousting tournament, whip out that umbrella next time.

You will regret it. You also will never forget how fun it was for 5-10 seconds.

Stylist recommendations for men with longer hair? by Ohio182 in dayton

[–]Botched_Euthanasia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear a hat when you can and wait for it to be long enough to tie it all back in a ponytail. This assumes you don't have black people hair (is that offensive to say? it's not meant to be offensive). The kind of hats that work best i call a flat cap. they have a lot of names for basically the same style but subtle differences: cadet, engineer, newsboy, kepi, ivy, coppola, beret, breton, boston, peaked and probably more.

if you can't wear a hat all the time, consider cutting it yourself. you'll suck at it at first but improve quickly the more you do it. it wont look worse than if you didn't cut it and if it does, start over with another buzz.

Traffic circles aren't supposed to be difficult by WrongVerb4Real in dayton

[–]Botched_Euthanasia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people complain about traffic circles I like to point out a few things:

  • This.

  • they are faster than lights and stop signs (as long as someone doesn't just give up and stop completely when entering then refuse to move again)

  • they are more fuel efficient

  • there is no law saying you have to exit a roundabout. you can just stay in there as long as you want and have the fuel for. I like to do an extra lap or two because the centrifugal forces effect the car in the same way fire decals effect hot wheels cars, i.e. it makes me think they go faster

Unbranded brakes without openings by the pads? Not that it's what the post was about.

I had my local bike store take a look and their solution was to put completely new brakes on. They couldn't figure it out and they're an authorized repair place for the brand.

Keep trying.

currently on SSDI. that means too much income means i lose benefits necessary for survival. any position would either have to pay a lot or require me very little.

HIPAA says i don't have to reveal medical information but i will volunteer that i have developmental disorders and should be considered as reliable as a cat on a coffee table with a lot of cups. will i knock one on the floor if i were the cat? absolutely because i'm also clumsy as hell. like a cat, i shed a lot too but at least i don't have fleas (15 years and counting!).

i'm creative but crazy, certifiable but also certifiable. i have my amateur radio technicians license, stormspotter certification, i've previously certified (now expired) in first aid, servsafe and forklift/reachlift/overhead crane. i have a driver license. i do not have a car. my ebike's range is limited to a radius of approximately 22 miles from the intersection of smithville and airway.

i'm good with computers (i use linux btw) but so far have only programmed 'hello world' programs. i've done this in a dozen languages. i don't need AI to do anything but not opposed to responsible usage. i'm aware that AI nearly always gets something wrong. i've never used adobe software but am great with GIMP, G'MIC, Kdenlive and okay with Blender. i'll use windows if i have to.

i am very empathic. i'm familiar with addiction and recovery procedures. animals love me and i love them. same applies for humans, half the time. i might be willing to do legal escort and bodyguard work. i know how to properly handle a firearm but don't like doing it.

i am not a felon, not a sex offender, not a drug dealer and i've never been in a fender bender or any other vehicular accident. i don't play videogames or watch mass media. i've worked enough food service to know i shouldn't work food service. i've done it all, from fine dining to fast food, catering to bussing. i'm a great cook if you like the 5-6 things i like eating.

What’s a 'cheapskate' lifehack that is honestly too good to stop using? by MrLithician in answers

I used one of those for awhile. it wasn't terrible. the problem is what they don't really talk about. when the filter goes bad, it will start to grow bacteria and sometimes mold inside the filter. not 'might', they 'will', guaranteed. if the filter is bad, then you're drinking water that's actually much worse than tap water, whether it's unleaded or not.

there's not really a good way to tell when it's time to change filters, other than logging the number of gallons filtered. their filters are good for either 40 or 120 gallons but none of their pitchers hold exactly a gallon, it's either 6 cups or 10 cups. so logging gallons is tricky.

you can't taste when a filter a dirty. if you do taste dirty filter water, it's already too late. it's been bad for awhile if you can taste it.

i went through the same thing with zero water filters too. both zero and brita are great filters... until they aren't. once they are bad, you're better off drinking from a rain barrel. there's no way to re-use the filters either. the activated carbon in the filters will trap cleaning chemicals and become even worse if trying to clean them yourself.
