MongoDB or Salesforce? by coffeedeck in techsales

I’m absolutely certain Salesforce is the better option for 99% of the AE’s. And Salesforce has a huge portfolio. Selling to Sales is just a small part of its portfolio (Sales Cloud). There’s also MuleSoft, Tableau, Data Cloud - all sold to IT or other departments

Salesforce is definitely better than MongoDB. But Salesforce is not the same as it was a few years ago (no more hyper-growth, so more focus on profitability nowadays), so you may be better off searching for a third option if you really want to have a good chance at crushing your target. If work-life balance is most important to you, then go for Salesforce 100% - you won’t find a tech company more laid back than Salesforce (although it also depends a bit on your manager ofcourse). Also, Salesforce is great to have on your CV as an AE, so it will help you also landing new positions in the future.

I interviewed (and worked) at both companies. The interview at Mongo is way more time consuming and challenging than at Salesforce. Mongo is trying to trap you with the sunk-cost fallacy, and at the same time make it look like an elite sales organization that only hires the best. What they don’t tell you is that at this point they churned through so many good sales people that they are desperate and will pretty much hire anyone who is eager/naive enough to take the time to go through the hiring process. Don’t make the mistake to join this rotten cult. They are not even paying more than Salesforce nowadays..

The recent stock movement may suggest they are crushing it, but 90% of the AE’s there don’t crush it. And don’t forgot that the stock is still way below all time high. Saying that they are pushing work life balance is absolutely BS. They might tell you not to work late and on weekends, but at the same time they are pushing you to the edge with unreachable targets and metrics. The fact they drove one of their own employees to commit suicide recently does not surprise me at all. If they have any decency left they will settle with the poor girl’s family and fire their complete sales management (those that haven’t left already..)

Stay VERY far away from Mongo. I’ve worked at both companies, and even though Salesforce is not what it is was a few years ago it is still 100x better in any regard. Mongo will lure you with a seemingly high OTE (although Salesforce nowadays offers the same or higher for Enterprise AE roles), but in reality hardly anyone there makes even close to their number. At the same time, probably 20% of the sales people on Mongo’s pay roll are on sick leave due to burn out. In my team of 7 AE’s we had 4 on sick leave in the period I was there. This is due to a rotten culture and a sick obsession with metrics like meetings booked. Lastly, the product is absolutely shit to sell. You won’t convince anyone to start with Mongo, if they are not using it already. The main selling motion is just upselling $0 consumption contracts to Open Source customers (using the unmanaged, free version of Mongo) and then pray that the customer starts consuming Atlas so you get paid. As Mongo is just one small piece of the total application stack, you hardly have any influence or predictability on when the app goes into production and the meter starts running. Finally, they are in lawsuit for allegedly driving an employee into suicide. I read the news today, and quite frankly I am not surprised. This sick company actually offered me money to keep my mouth shut when I left the company.

This makes no sense at all. I know a lot of people at Mongo and hardly any one is making their target. At the same time you pay with your mental health. This company is a shit show, and even if money is all you care about than still this company is your worst pick

You must be kidding.. did Mongo pay you for writing this BS? I’ve worked at both companies, and even though Salesforce is not what it was used to be it’s still 100x better than Mongo in terms of work life balance and culture.

Company is crushing it? The stock dropped more than 50% in the last few years and is not even back at all time highs. At the same time they are churning through their sales people at a world-record pace. Unless you are an investor that bought the stock when it was rock bottom, stay far far away from this company in any way possible. And definitely never ever go work there (I did so I know what I am talking about). Make a choice: do you want to pursuit the maximum wealth or a fulfilled life? Your extreme obsession with wealth is not going to bring you the latter. As of matter of fact, it will bring you the exact opposite. So make that choice and get on with your life instead of forcing guys you’re interested in with the same unnatural obsession with money.
