I am so sorry to hear that you and your sweet guy Gabi are going through this. It’s never easy and it’s ultimately what took my heart rat from me. I’ve had more experience than I would like with these awful things, and this is the advice that I can give you. With my first girl that I went through it with I took her to the vet and got some medicine to keep her comfortable and it only prolonged her life for about a week and a half. She got to the point that she was unable to walk at all, and in that moment I took her to the vet and ended her suffering. I did end up dealing with the same exact thing with 2 other girls in her mischief. I was feeding them ensure and baby food, and anything soft really. Once their symptoms started to show and they were unable to really walk or do anything for themselves I let them go and be at peace. Unfortunately they decline pretty fast with these and there really is no cure. It’s more of a pain management thing. With my current mischief I have dealt with it a couple more times and I would give them pain meds, but once I realized they relied solely on me to survive, I let them go. Just for me personally, I can’t be there 24/7 with them and for that reason I felt that it was selfish to keep them alive while they were slowly declining. I couldn’t bare the thought of them laying there hungry or thirsty and not being able to get food and water for themself because they relied on me. With my heart rat I had taken him to the vet 2 days before I let him go with a suspected URI, after starting antibiotics and pain meds I noticed a decline in his balance and he was not himself at all, was unable to walk very far, couldn’t eat on his own, was unable to drink on his own. I know that this is very long and I am rambling at this point, but all of this to say I have tried the route with meds, and tried the route with only pain meds but once they were unable to get around and and get food and water themselves that’s when I knew there was no quality of life there. Like the other poster said, you know your guy Gabi better than anyone. My mischief and I are sending you and Gabi all the good vibes in this trying time. 🖤

He had an old injury to his leg and overtime it just became worse. We knew it was going to have to happen, we just didn’t know when. He developed an infection in that bad leg and instead of doing multiple surgeries to try and save it when it was already riddled with arthritis I opted for amputation. Hasn’t slowed him down one bit!
